It allows simulation, analysis, observation, and control of those processes. It presents a 'menu-driven' structure and a high interactivity with animated bloc-diagrams. A set of tools is presented which will provide an infrastructure upon which a fully integrated CACSE package could be readily built. Emphasis is placed on the man-machine interface. One of the problems with the design of decentralized controllers for complex processes is that the interactions of the process parts are not known and therefore design methods for centralized multivariable controllers cannot be used. By a sequential (successive) procedure for process identification and computeraidedcontroller design it is possible to design decentralized controllers where the interactions are automatically taken into account. It is shown by simulations that this approach converges rapidly. The sequential design can be applied for multivariable as well as cascaded and hierarchical controlsystems. The sequential procedure is especially attractive if self-tuning controllers are used.

We have presented a method of controller design of an industrial process unit, where distributed monitoring and control is implemented using a variety of controlcomputer processors. A simple method of model building and model fitting for process characterization is provided. The method uses an on-line software control simulator on a PC workstation for the controller design. The same simulator program can be used for further on-line tuning of controllers during the operation of the plant. This yields a practical, easy to implement, adaptive controller in the distributed control environment.

The database system named DIPOS intended for use in computer-aided electric power system expansion planning is presented. The CAD system containing the DIPOS database is explained in the context of the transmission network expansion planning. There are many reasons that in CAD applications we should think about specialized or problem-oriented databases, which would give unique solutions in particular situations, than general purpose databases with maintenance and operation overheads. The user's view of data, user interface, database data model and physical database organization are discussed. The system is the relational database from the user's point of view but it employs the network database data model at the system level. This allows the user to have a known natural relational data model with its correctness and ability to perform profitable relational operations, whereas the DIPOS database network data model gives additional advantages in the pre-definition of possible use patterns of the data. The acceptable input is defined by the applications developer using extended transition networks represented as graphs, which are entered and manipulated graphically. INTEGRA provides a means of controlling the fine detail and a method of abstracting away from it using nested graphs. Interaction tools are supplied to the user including macro languages, synonyms, prompting, menus, help, walkthrough, tracing, and customising. The application of computers to design and manufacturing in engineering, CAD/CAM, is not new. However, it is only relatively recently that falling costs and technology advances in microelectronics have made CAD/CAM systems widely available to the mechanical industry. Automobile and aeronautical industries were among the pioneers. The primary advantages in adopting CAD/CAM are known and include faster response with improved documentation, improved accuracy and quality, and reduced lead times. We develop guidelines and criteria for selection of a CAD/CAM to meet mechanical industry requirements, including the interactive graphic system and associated software for design and software packages for manufacturing.
