A sequential randomized algorithm is developed for robust optimization which is to minimize a linear objective function subject to a parameter dependent convex constraint for all uncertain parameter values. The algorithm is realized as a probabilistic cutting plane technique based on maximum volume ellipsoid center, where candidates of the optimal value and of the optimal solution are sequentially updated by a series of cutting planes generated by random samples of the uncertain parameters. This algorithm stops in a finite number of iterations which is of polynomial order of the problem size, and provides a feasible solution of a chance constraint optimization which corresponds to a probabilistic relaxation of the robust optimization with a prescribed probability. Then, it is shown that the algorithm can find a suboptimal value whose lower bound is the optimal value of the chance constrained optimization with the prescribed probability and whose upper bound is determined by the optimal value of the robust optimization. © 2010 ieee.

Recent robust analysis techniques are applied to assess the robust stability and robust performances of the longitudinal control system of an aircraft. Two different uncertain models, polytopic or LFT models are considered. Robust analysis certificates are built by computing unique Lyapunov functions or parameter dependent Lyapunov functions (PDLF). Several criteria are dealt with: Closed-loop pole placement, worst-caseH∞cost, worst-case H2 cost and impulse-to-peak response. All tests are done using the RoMulOC toolbox which generates the related LMI optimization problems in YALMIP format that are then solved using available semidefinite programing solvers. Numerical results are analyzed and some preliminary conclusions are drawn. © 2010 ieee.

Model Predictive control (MPC) is a proven control concept with many applications in the process industry. Popularity of the framework is mainly due to its ability to optimize behavior of the process while respecting physical and economical constraints. The major challenge of implementing MPC in real time on low-cost hardware is the inherent computational complexity. To address this goal, it is proposed to solve a given MPC problem using parametric programming, which encodes the optimal control moves as a lookup table. A great advantage being that such tables can then be processed even with low computational resources and therefore allow MPC to be deployed to low cost control devices. In the paper we present a unique software tool which allows MPC problems to be designed with low human effort, and is capable to automatically generate real-time executable code for various target platforms. © 2010 ieee.

Broidery CAD software has been widely used in the sewing pattern design by the broidery industry. All the Broidery CAD software is installed onto the computer of the swing machine company that offers the designing tool solely for the sewing pattern designer. The users of the swing machine are rejected by using the pattern design software due to no connection between the sewing machine and the computer loaded with the broidery CAD software. The swing machine users can not obtain the instant response from the broidery company. In this study, we propose an integrating real-time sewing path designing system that based on the concept of the cloud computing to allow different sewing machine users with different operating system to be able to connect to the company server to either retrieve the sewing path data or upload the new swing image or pattern by the Internet communication. The proposed system includes an application server that will perform the calculation function of converting the user desired sewing pattern into the sewing path and the stitch coordinates that can be fed into the sewing machine. The proposed system will change the conventional single-directional way of using the sewing pattern design process. By the cloud computing server, multiple users can share the sewing path data and modify the existing sewing path in the real-time manner. This provides a new way to solve the problem with no communication between designer and user and offer a creative way to enhance the functionality of the broidery machine. © 2010 ieee.

Event-based control is an alternative to traditional control where new measurements are sampled only if critical events occur. This not only allows to reduce the control effort but it satisfies nowadays application requirements, such for example reduction of information exchange, computational power, or energy consumption. The work in this field is, however, still sparse and only a few results are available. Properly choosing an event-detection logic can considerably improve the overall system's performance. We propose a control algorithm which makes use of a model-based triggering strategy to reduce the control effort (reduced-attention control), while guaranteeing robustness against bounded additive perturbations for nonlinear continuous time systems. In particular, we derive conditions which guarantee that asymptotic stability of the nominal system implies practical stability of the real one in a neighborhood of the origin. A continuous stirred tank reactor is used as a benchmark problem to show the effectiveness of the presented algorithm. © 2010 ieee.

This paper is concerned with the sensitivity analysis of optimal feedback control system design with respect to design parameters that may be determined based on various requirements other than control. Once such parameters are fixed, there are established computational tools to accomplish optimal control design. Nevertheless it is usually unclear how optimal control design is affected in case the values of design parameters are changed. In particular, the problem becomes more complicated in the presence of another type of parameters, i.e., tuning parameters, that can (and will) be tuned for the best possible control performance. Such a case requires analysis of the effect of the change in design parameters on the best choice of the values of tuning parameters. The approach presented in this paper utilizes a recently developed algebraic approach to polynomial spectral factorization that employs the Sum of Roots to acquire an explicit relationship between parameters and the optimal performance level, and analyzes optimal design in the presence of design parameters. More specifically, algebraic approaches to the sensitivity analysis of the optimal feedback control performance with respect to design parameters, the optimal choice of tuning parameter values, and the relationship among parameters in optimal design are presented. © 2010 ieee.

In this work, the normal vector method for robust design is considered to account for actuator saturation effects when unknown time-varying disturbances are present, and desired dynamic properties have to be guaranteed. The normal vector method ensures that desired dynamic properties hold despite uncertain parameters by maintaining a minimal distance between the operating point and so-called critical manifolds where the process behavior changes qualitatively. In this paper input saturation is considered for the first time in the normal vector framework. In order to solve the resulting optimization problem, first and second order derivatives of the flow of a dynamical system has to be computed efficiently. For this purpose, a new platform for source-level manipulation of mathematical models, currently under development at RWTH Aachen University, is proposed to solve the technical difficulties arising when the event of actuator saturation takes place. © 2010 ieee.

This contribution concerns robust optimization and control of nonlinear steady-state and dynamic processes under uncertain disturbances or parameters. We use chance constrained programming to solve such stochastic optimization and control problems. While steady-state processes always possess time-independent uncertain parameters, in dynamic processes there may be both time-independent and timedependent uncertain parameters. For problems with timedependent uncertain parameters these parameters will be discretized in the time horizon and thus the total number of uncertain variables to be treated will be high, which leads to difficulties to compute probabilities and their gradients. A new approach to an efficient computation is developed by using the sparse grid technique with which CPU-time can be significantly reduced. Two application examples from process engineering are taken to demonstrate the effectiveness of our computational framework. The performance of sparse grid integration is verified through numerical experiments in comparison to Monte-Carlo and Quasi-Monte-Carlo techniques. © 2010 ieee.

Probabilistic neural network (PNN), a kind of radial basis networks, is usually used for classification problems. It has the advantages of much faster training process and more accurate results using the minimum Bayesian risk criterion compared with other neural networks. In this paper, we use this neural network in brain-machine interface for decoding neural ensemble activity. Rats were trained to perform a lever pressing task for water rewards and implanted a chronic 16-channel microelectrode array in the primary motor cortex. The multi-channel neural activity and pressure signal of the lever was recorded simultaneously. In the PNN architecture, input vector was modified and contained not only current neuronal activity but also previously estimated pressure value which was taken as one input. This modified PNN was implemented in Matlab and obtained a good performance. Furthermore, field-programmable gate array (FPGA) based hardware implementation of PNN were developed and tested with real data. Because of the parallel computation ability and optimized architecture of FPGA, the results are as accurate as the realization of Matlab-based but the running speed is much faster. This indicates that the performance of current FPGA is competent for portable BMI applications. © 2010 ieee.

This study is concerned with the synthesis of periodically time-varying memory state-feedback controllers (PTVMSFCs) for discrete-time linear systems. In our preceding studies, we have already established a solid theoretical basis for the LMI-based (robust) H∞-PTVMSFCs synthesis, and the goal of this paper is to extend those results to the H2 performance criterion. In the H2 case, the main difficulty stems from the fact that we have to ensure the existence of common auxiliary variables for multiple LMI conditions that are related to the Lyapunov inequality and inequalities for bounding traces that characterize the H2 norm. We can indeed overcome this difficulty and derive a necessary and sufficient LMI condition for the optimal H2-PTVMSFC synthesis. Based on this result, we also consider robust H2-PTVMSFC synthesis for polytopictype uncertain LTI systems.© 2010 ieee.
