The controlsystem of an upper arm prosthesis belongs to the category of multivariable coordinated controlsystem. In order to perform any functional motion such as, for instance, raising a glass of drinking water to the lips, the motion of the elbow and wrist joints (flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, pronation and supination) of the prosthesis should be in close coordination with the motion of the shoulder joint of the amputee. The authors propose a two-level structure of controlsystem. Also is proposed the concept of dominant variables. The mathematical model of the prosthesis and the coordinated control algorithms are presented and are verified by digital and hybrid simulation results.

A Fortran IV software package is presented for computer-aideddesign of optimal continuous, sampled-data and discrete-time linear P, PI and PID controllers with quadratic performance index, based on modern high-efficient methods and algorithms. It is shown that the design of any multivariable output PID controller can be reduced to the design of an optimal PI regulator system. The design procedure is illustrated with appropriate examples.

The design of an automation system for a distribution process using the computer-aided specification and design technique EPOS is presented, showing some of its characteristic features. After a short description of the technical process and the general automation tasks, the requirement specification using EPOS-R and the functional design with the aid of EPOS-S are demonstrated. Some of the main advantages of EPOS for the design of automation systems are discussed, including its properties for analysis and documentation.

A new algebraic method for deadbeat control of multivariable linear time-invariant continuous systems is presented. This method enables us to find a feedback gain matrix and a piecewise-constant control input vector such that the output vector of the closed-loop system is identical with a given reference input vector for appropriate values of t. The method is very practicable for computeraideddesign and is illustrated by a two-input two-output linear time-invariant systems.

The engineering activities of designing and implementing process controlsystems including realtime computer hardware and software are considered. Several models of the design process are discussed. A general design-level and design-type oriented model is introduced, defining the categories of algorithmic, operational and auxiliary design. Based on this model, the design methodologies are classified. design support systems are especially discussed, stating requirements for coping with the needs of realtime automation systems. The computeraided support system EPOS is explained.
