In this paper different interaction measures are reviewed and compared. In particular, the two Gramian based interaction measures the Hankel Interaction Index Array (HIIA) and the Participation Matrix (PM) are considered. Moreover, motivations for incorporating the concept of output controllability in an interaction measure are given and a H-2 norm based interaction measure is investigated.

This paper proposes a method which gives a state space realization of the linear systems with algebraic loops not only in numerical format but also in symbolic format and guarantees that the order of the system is preserved. The method uses an adjacency matrix in graph theory for the modeling of the controlsystems and uses the matrix inversion lemma to calculate the inverse of matrix symbolically and to obtain the symbolic state space realizations. We have developed a new software platform for modeling and simulation of controlsystems using the proposed method.

The analytic evaluation of roundoff noise is an interesting approach to analyze the effects of fixed-point implementation of linear filters or controllers. This paper is based on a generic framework that describes controller algorithms. Fixed-point implementation (in different schemes) that is associated to these algorithms are exhibited, and the output roundoff noise power is then analytically build. Finally, the optimal realization problem, according to the roundoff noise power, is considered.

A numerical algorithm for reconstructing continuous-time linear models with pure integrators from their discrete-time equivalents is derived in this paper. The algorithm treats the reconstruction problem in the frequency-domain and establishes a numerically tractable z-domain to s-domain mapping, which avoids the need to software packages with symbolic mathematical solving capabilities. The proposed algorithm can be conveniently implemented using standard building block numerical routines and has been recently employed in a computer-aidedcontrolsystems design software package. Unlike other approaches, this algorithm is shown to avoid unnecessary computations, which typically result in numerical burden, ambiguity, and singularity. A numerical example is illustrated demonstrating the application of the proposed algorithm.

The problem of estimating bounds for time-varying parameter perturbations using measurement data is addressed. In particular, time-varying time-delay is considered. An estimate of the perturbation is produced based on a quantized approximation of the uncertainty and the sparse structure of its derivative. The Pade-approximation and orthogonal collocation method are used to approximate the delay. A first-order system with time-delay is used as an illustrative example. The gain, time-constant and time-delay are considered as uncertainties here.

The focus of this paper is on the generation of controllers for fault tolerant control. Active off-line fault tolerant controldesign relies on a pool of controllers designed to handle different failure modes. designing this pool of controllers remains a challenge and this paper hence investigates automatic control synthesis for a specific class of systems by abstracting the control problem to a set of combinatorial objects or a state machine. Next, a discrete game is formulated, in which the objective is to reach a goal set representing a desired (reference) state, and faults are treated as moves by a malignant opponent. Assuming that a winning strategy exists for this game, it forms a rule base that determines which control law to use under a given fault condition.

Industrial controlsystems are used in most of the industrial sectors to achieve production improvement, process optimization and time and cost reduction. Integration, reuse, flexibility and optimization are demanded to adapt to a rapidly changing and competitive market. There is also a growing requirement that all software tools that support the different phases of the development process (design, configuration, management) can be integrated as well. Thus, a consolidation of modeling methodologies for achieving this goal is needed. This paper proposes a Model-driven approach based on different views of the application (control engineering, electric engineering and software engineering views) for designing industrial controlsystems. The approach is based on the definition of a description language that includes the description of the three domain views and their relationships. In particular, XML schema technology is used to define the architectural style and schematron technology to implement the composition rules.

Anti-windup compensators are widely used in controlsystems in order to minimize the negative effects of actuators saturations on stability and performance. But, despite recent theoretical advances in this field, the computation of such compensators is often realized by a trial-and-error simulation-based approach. An alternative method is proposed in this paper which is essentially devoted to the presentation of a new MATLAB(C) toolbox. This freely-available software implements a collection of routines which are based on recent results in anti-windup analysis and synthesis techniques. Moreover, a user-friendly SIMULINK(C) interface has been developed in order to fasten the definition of anti-windup design and simulation diagrams.

A closed-loop and an open-loop active vibration control technique are critically compared, accounting for the effects of finite precision arithmetic. The main result is that the relevance of such effects is pointed out and characterised, as rigorously as possible at the present state of the research, in a suitably idealised context, and with specifically devised indicators. Also, the differences between the compared methods, and in particular the different relevance of finite precision-related facts, are put to evidence and synthetically investigated. The ideas proposed herein can be extended to other types of vibration control methods, the final goal of such an overall research being a general framework to study and compare those methods, in suitably defined nominal conditions, and accounting for realistic implementation facts.
