State-of-the-art, uni-processor algebraic Riccati equation solvers for automatic control computations are investigated and compared for various problem sizes. General-purpose SLICOT solvers are very efficient for small-size problems, but they cannot compete for larger problems with specialized solvers designed for certain problem classes, such as Newton solvers using low rank Cholesky factors of the solutions of Lyapunov equations built at each iteration.

This paper presents an application of an image processing system in the monitoring and control of the hot-rolling of steel bars. A robust implementation both with respect to camera packaging and data transmission has been choosen. A gigabit ethernet network is used for all communication within the system, whereby a switch with integrated fire-wall is used to distribute the data and provide connection to the outside world. The image processing algorithms use statistical estimates of confidence to ensure robust operation under extreme conditions. Feedback-control requires a sampling rate approximately 10 times higher that the bandwidth of the system which is to be controlled [K.J. Astrm, T. Hgglund, PID controllers: Theory, design, and Tuning, Instrumental Society of America, 1995 [1], Jukka Lieslehto, Wap application for pid controller tuning, in: proceedings of the 2000 ieee International symposium on computer-aidedcontrolsystemdesign, vol. September 25-27, Ancorage, Alaska, USA, 2000, pp. 168-172 [2]]. The system demonstrates the acquisition and processing of 500 frames per second in real time, this is commensurate with 50 Hz bandwidth presently possible for hydraulic systems. The aim of the paper is to present an implementation of the already mature web services technology to the realtime world based on the project Linux RTAI which includes advanced tools for the integration of computeraidedcontrolsystemdesign environments. Within this context, RTAI-XML is a new server component executing within a RTAI domain that works as a bridge between a remote client application and a real-time process. The server exposes its methods and properties to the Internet using XML (eXtensible Markup Language) and a remote procedure call framework. The application contexts of the new platform range from control education to industrial applications.

This paper presents the multi-disciplinary nature of embedded controlsystemdesign and how a course developed at the University of Michigan addresses the broad set of topics needed for embedded controlsystemdesign to senior engineering undergraduates from a variety of backgrounds. The lab component uses a typical automotive powertrain micro-controller and teaches topics in system dynamics through programming assignments involving dynamical systems simulations. Students interact with and feel their virtual environments though a haptic interface. We present the final project in the course, in which students build a fixed-based driving simulator to test advanced automotive controlsystemdesigns. This course was developed partially in response to industry demand for students with experience in embedded control. The course has generated remarkable student interest and former students have provided positive feedback about projects and have reported better opportunities in the job market as a result of their experience in this course.

The main SLICOT functionality is made accessible from Matlab or Scilab environments via MEX- and M-files.
