Over the past fifty years the size of computer applications, as gauged by any reasonable measure, has increased exponentially. In contrast, our cognitive capabilities for understanding have not changed. This discrepancy has forced us to look for more abstract representations of systems to reduce the number of elements we have to consider simultaneously in order to understand the system behavior. In this contribution we argue that the next unit of abstraction, beyond the component concept, will be a subsystem that performs a specified service autonomously despite the occurrence of disturbances that were not foreseen in the original design. © 2003 ieee.

We proposed a new method for the automatic detection of lesions in brain PET images based on the asymmetry across segments of the segmented PET data. Per-pixel asymmetry feature detection is experimentally compared with our per-segment approach. The proposed per-segment method is shown to produce fewer false positives in the brain PET data examples presented. Also, the algorithm is shown to provide accurate demarcation of the tumour in each plane of PET data. Therefore, this method offers potential advantages in region-of-interest (ROI) extraction for kinetic modelling and quantitative analysis. Copyright © 2003 IF AC.

Thanks to the Internet technology, there have been many distance learning (web-based) courses offered by academic institutes around the world nowadays through the Internet. And these courses have benefited many students who might be constrained by distance and time. Nevertheless, most web-based courses are "lecturing courses" that cannot fulfill the need for engineering technology education. In this paper, we propose hardware/software architecture for a web-based distance laboratory for programmable logic controllers (PLCs). This Web-based PLC Lab allows the laboratory facilities shared among several academic institutes and can be accessed by registered students to practice PLC experiments at their own home, enhancing the quality of education without much increasing in the overall cost. With the help of web cameras, the students can even observe the live video of PLC experiments through the Internet.

The need for flexibility, adaptability and timeliness to information service systems has become increasingly important since the advent of electronic commerce. This fosters an urgent need for the design of a high-assurance information service system to meet both providers' and users' heterogeneous requirements. In order to cope with the rapidly evolving situations of service provision and utilization, one autonomous information service system has been proposed, called Faded Information Field (FIF). FIF is a distributed information service system architecture, sustained by push/pull mobile agents, through a recursive demand-oriented provision of the most popular information closer to the users to make a tradeoff between the cost of service allocation and access. In this system, users' requests are autonomously driven by pull mobile agents in charge of finding the relevant service. In the case of a monoservice request, the system is designed to reduce the time needed for users to access the information and to preserve the consistency of the replicas. However, when the user requests joint selection of multi-services, synchronization of atomic actions and timeliness have to be assured by the system. In this paper, the relationship that exists among the contents, properties and access ratios of information services is clarified. Based on these factors, the ratio of correlation is defined and the autonomous integration and provision of information services for heterogeneous FIFs to provide one-stop service for users' multi-services requirements are proposed. The effectiveness of the proposed technology is shown through evaluation and the results show that the integrated services can reduce the total users access time and increase services consumption compared with separate systems.

This paper describes an embedded architecture designed for the "Navigation aided Intelligent cruise control" (NAICC) project and more generally for the development of driver assistance systems. An original CAN bus based hardware architecture is presented. This approach allows the easy integration of numerous heterogeneous components and the management of a great part of the complexity inherited from this diversity. On the other hand, the corresponding software architecture is proposed. It is based on "computer aided control system design" and high level object oriented concepts in order to integrate and make all the conception stages of an embedded system easier. An original localisation-based bending light system is presented in order to illustrate the implementation facilities obtained with the proposed approach.

designing a discrete nonlinear H/sup /spl infin// control law requires solving the discrete Hamilton-Jacobi-Issac (DHJI) equations, which are a set of mixed nonlinear partial and algebraic differential equations. An algorithm for obtaining the Taylor series solution of DHJI equations was given in which showed that the coefficients of the Taylor series solution were governed by an algebraic Ricatti equation, and a sequence of linear algebraic equations. in this paper, we will further apply the algorithm to design a third order H/sub /spl infin// controller for the well known inverted pendulum system. Simulation is given to show the performance of the third order controller in stabilization and disturbance attenuation.

This paper aims at advancing micromanipulation technology with in-situ PVDF piezoelectric force sensing and control during microassembly and packaging process. To allow close monitoring of magnitude and direction of forces (surface, friction, and assembly force) acting on micro devices during manipulation, the polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) is used to fabricate highly sensitive 1-D and 2-D force sensors for assembly of micro devices. By using the designed force sensors with the effective signal processing techniques, the contact force/impact signal can be obtained desirably so that it greatly improves the reliability of force regulation in microassembly. Moreover, based on a new sensor-referenced control method, the force control had been implemented by employing a micromanipulator system equipped with the force sensor and its results verify the effectiveness of sensor model as well as the performance of force feedback and control system. Ultimately the technology will provide a critical and major step towards the development of automated manufacturing processes for batch assembly of micro devices.

In this paper, a high precision polishing robot with a learning-based surface following controller is proposed for polishing PET (poly ethylene terephthalate) bottle molds with curve surface. The shape of a mounted abrasive tool, attached to the tip of the robot arm, is a ball-end type. When a PET bottle mold with a large curvature is polished, not only the orientation of the mounted abrasive tool is fixed but also its revolution is locked. The motion of the mounted abrasive tool is feedforwardly controlled based on initial trajectory calculated in advance. The trajectory is generated by cutter location data constituted from a CAM system. The trajectory is modified through the process of actual polishing. The surface is polished by a polishing force acting between the mold and the abrasive tool. The polishing force is assumed to be considered as a composite force of the contact and kinematic friction forces, in which the friction consists of Coulomb and viscous frictions. Velocities in the normal and tangent directions are delicately controlled so that the proposed system is effective for obtaining a polishing surface as achieved by skilled workers.

The paper describes a new algorithm of optimal control system design for a linear, time-invariant, single-input, single-output plant. The proposed algorithm has low computational complexity, high stability and possesses the clear physical sense of the existence conditions of the design problem solution. The reference (command) signal and disturbances can include random and regular components. Algorithm is based on the matrix method solution of the polynomial equations. Numerical examples are given.
