A synchronous code-division multiple-access (CDMA) channel is considered for which power control is available. Each of the users is assigned a quality-of-service (QoS) threshold that is measured in terms of a signal-to-interference ratio (SIR), and to cover the situation of multiple classes of users, these are allowed to be unequal to each other. The receiver is taken to be of the nonlinear decision-feedback type in which the users are successively detected. Given the processing gain of the system, which is no greater than the number of users, we minimize the required total power (i. e., the sum of the users' received powers) over all sets of signature sequences and power-control polices that allow the users to meet their required QoS constraints.

We present a formal specification of fault tolerance requirements for an analytical redundancy based fault tolerant flight controlsystem. The development of the specification is driven by the performance and fault tolerance requirements contained in the US Air Force military specification MIL-F-9490D. The design constraints imposed to the system from adopting the analytical redundancy approach are captured within the specification. We draw some preliminary conclusions from our study.

A high-level controller, supervisory controller, is required to monitor, control, and diagnose the low-level controllers of the high-speed train. The supervisory controller controls low-level controllers by monitoring input and output signals, events, and the high-speed train can be modeled as a discrete event system (DES). The high-speed train is modeled with automata, and the high-level control specification is defined. The supervisory controller is designed using the high-speed train model and the control specification. The designed supervisory controller is verified and evaluated with simulation using a computer-aided software engineering (CASE) tool, Object GEODE.

With parametric (P) models, the probability distributions of each PK/PD (pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic) model parameter are described as means and covariances, as estimators of the central tendency and of the dispersion. With nonparametric (NP) models, however, no assumptions at all are made about the shape of the parameter distributions. This robust approach has the viewpoint that the best (ideal) population model would be the correct structural model, together with the entire collection of each subject's exactly-known parameter values, if it were somehow possible to know them. NP methods resolve the results into up to one set of parameter values for each subject, along with an estimated probability for each parameter set. The strength of the method is its ability to estimate the entire population parameter joint density with maximum likelihood. Optimal population modeling currently begins by determining the assay error pattern explicitly over its working range. Next, one currently uses a P population modeling method to separate intra- from inter-individual variability. One can then use this information in an NP approach to estimate the entire population parameter discrete joint density. NP models lend themselves naturally to "multiple model" (MM) dosage design for maximally precise regimens for optimal patient care.

This paper addresses the problem of low-bias control for an active magnetic bearing (AMB). Using a complementarity flux condition, a simplified, three-dimensional model is used to describe the dynamics of this mode of operation. Recent results from the theory of saturating control are used to design a stabilizing controller. The saturation level is a free parameter that is chosen by the control engineer. Numerical simulations at the end of the paper show the effectiveness of the design method proposed.

This paper deals with the application of H-infinity control for the design of an active suspension system. The involved vehicle is represented by a half-car model. A multivariable H-infinity control is developed to satisfy the performance/comfort objectives. Some simulation results on Epical ride conditions point out the relevance of the proposed methodology.

A yukata is a type of traditional Japanese clothing. The designers have difficulty in drawing its cutting pattern with texture alignment. In this paper, we describe about a CAD system for the yukata. First, we developed image processing algorithms for achieving the texture alignment. Second, we developed a measurement system for the wearer's body shape. Third, a three-dimensional garment simulation was achieved. By using this system, designers tailor easily the yukata regardless of their skill.

This paper is concerned with a new auto-tuning method to aci:lust the parameters in the feedforward and feedback PI controllers for a motor drive system, according to identified physical parameters such as a motor time constant, viscous friction terms proportional to motor velocity and squared velocity, and Coulomb friction. These physical parameters can be obtained by specially setting up a suitable reference model and plug-in models in the simple adaptive control (SAC) algorithm. Digital implementation for the proposed adaptive algorithm is also presented, in which the relative degree problem is solved by a serial compensation scheme for a non-ASPR system. The effectiveness of the proposed auto-tuning algorithm is examined in experimental studies in velocity control of an AC synchronous servo motor. It is clarified that the proposed scheme can simultaneously give the perfect tracking to the reference output and the specified attenuation performance of the closed-loop system, even if the load mass largely changes uncertainly.
