Technological developments in micro-electronics have made digital control an indispensable component in all engineering systems. The rapid pace of development and the demands on modern systems in terms of novel functions and shorter development cycles has led to many challenges in system design and verification. The down side of improved functionality is the unmanaged complexity: never have we had systems built with so many different disciplines simultaneously at work-each with their own collection of conceptual and concrete tools. To manage complexity in this setting it is essential to recognise and accommodate the diversities as early as they arise. For most application domains this results in a multi-paradigm development process, and is most visible in the design modelling stage. We discuss how mathematical modelling and analysis of system properties is affected by having several disciplines at work. We show that soundness in design models can be obtained both through static analysis based on properties defined for a meta-model, and through formal verification of an instance of a model-the latter being defined in terms of conformance to a requirements specification.

Advances in the numerical algorithms and software for subspace-based linear multivariable system identification are described. Techniques for data compression of the input-output data, needed for the preliminary processing are investigated. They include standard QR factorization of a block-Hankel-block matrix, and the Cholesky factorization of the associated (inter)-correlation matrix built exploiting the block-Hankel structure. Structure exploiting algorithms and dedicated linear algebra tools, performing all the processing stages of two commonly used subspace identification algorithms, MOESP and N4SID, are presented. These techniques have been implemented in the new system identification toolbox for the SLICOT Library. Numerical results, showing the performance of the new algorithms and associated software, in comparison with the available tools, are given, and illustrate the advantages of the proposed numerical approaches.

The modern control configurated vehicle (CCV) design technologies aims at taking simultaneously into account performances and maneuvrability requirements, and handling quality specifications. Therefore it is very important to provide the modern stability and control engineers with a tool which allows to determine the maximum allowable range of aircraft parameter variation according to handling quality requirements. In this paper some applications of the software ROBAN, developed at the Centro Italiano Ricerche Aerospaziali (CIRA), are illustrated. ROBAN has been developed to analyse stability and performances (in terms of eigenvalues location on the complex plane) of linear systems subject to uncertain parameters, and has been shown to be particularly useful to deal with the robustness problems which arise in the flight control field. In particular, after a description of the algorithm, the applications of ROBAN to analyse (a) Robustness in flight conditions, (b) Robustness against sensor failures, (c) Robustness with respect to PIO (pilot-induced oscillations) are discussed.

We develop a framework supporting the formal hazard analysis of chemical plants. It provides generic specification modules for the description of safety properties, specification modules for the description of plant models, and theorems stating that certain subsystem structures of the plant model imply certain safety properties. Using the framework for hazard analysis, one first describes the plant and its control equipment as a composition of framework module instances. Then, one expresses the different safety properties of interest by parametrized framework modules. Finally, a safety property is proven when an appropriate theorem instance of the framework can be found. Thus, the framework facilitates the formal modeling. Moreover, the efforts for formal verifications are reduced drastically since framework theorem instances can replace explicit proofs. The framework utilizes modular temporal logic specifications supported by the specification language cTLA, and in particular is devoted to the compositional description of process systems.

A new CAD tool, the CRONE Matlab toolbox, is presented for engineers and researchers in mathematics and engineering sciences, particularly for electrical and electronic engineering and automatic control. The originality, aims, form and use of the toolbox are presented. The three main modules are described: their content, principle, algorithms, and applications for identification and control. Examples of their use are given. The original theoretical mathematical concepts developed in our laboratory based on noninteger differentiation are used for the computation. CRONE control is a typical application. The toolbox is not only for researchers, including Ph.D students, but also for industrials whose growing interest in noninteger integration, and their readiness to invest in the development of its applications, are manifest. The paper is divided into four sections: aims and organization of the toolbox, "mathematical tools" module, "identification by noninteger model" module, and the "CRONE CSD" module. The final section discusses perspectives.

The design of object-oriented real-time distributed systems is especially hard due to the fact that some issues (concerned with distribution) are dealt with too early in the system life-cycle, while others (concerned with strategy) are hard-coded as programming-in-the-small issues, and still others (concerned with time) are hidden inside the operating system kernel. We present a reference architecture for monitoring and control systems that addresses the first two of these issues. The architecture raises distribution, activation and timing to an explicit, programming-in-the-large level.

This paper summarizes a project that seeks to extend previous work in formal methods, functional languages, adaptive control and hybrid control to establish a methodology and a framework for validation and verification of adaptive/intelligent software systems. We are working to apply recent results in creating logical abstractions in Haskell to build a capability for automatic verification of new or modified components which meet the constraints imposed on the resulting system. As components become ready for use, we intend to apply the specification for the Open control Platform, currently under development as part of the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Software-Enabled control project, as the definition of our distributed control platform. Our approach emphasizes the use of off-line verification and validation techniques to establish ranges of parameter variations to be allowed by the adaptive/intelligent control software and online techniques to ensure that approved constraints are being met. We are in the process of developing an engineering plan to demonstrate use of the binary decision diagram (BDD) and Stanford Validity Checker (SVC) extensions to Haskell to automatically validate an adaptive, online control law redesign and implementation to meet performance specifications. This implementation will be designed to demonstrate an initial capability that can be extended to other adaptive and intelligent control systems safety critical tasks.

When modelling complex systems, complexity is usually not only due to a large number of coupled components, but also to the diversity of these components and to their intricate interactions. One would like to use a variety of formalisms to "optimally" describe the behaviour of different system components, aspects, and views. The choice of appropriate formalisms depends on criteria such as the application domain, the modeler's background, the goals, and the available computational resources. In the article, a formalism transformation graph (FTG) is presented. In the FTG, vertices correspond to formalisms, and edges denote existing formalism transformations. A transformation is a mapping of models in the source formalism onto models in the destination formalism (with behaviour invariance). This traversal allows for meaningfully coupling models in different semantics. Once mapped onto a common formalism, closure under coupling of that formalism makes the meaning of the coupled model explicit. In the context of hybrid systems models, the formalism transformation converges to a common denominator which unifies continuous and discrete constructs. Often, this is some form of event-scheduling/state-event locating/DAE formalism and corresponding solver. A different approach is presented which maps all formalisms, and in particular continuous ones, onto Zeigler's DEVS. Hereby, the state variables of the continuous models are discretized rather than time and the DEVS transition function progresses from one discretized state value to either the one just above or the one just below, giving as output, the time till the next transition.

This paper demonstrates that a technique of evolutionary computation can be used to automatically create the design for both the topology and parameter values (tuning) for a common controller (containing various parameters representing the overall characteristics of the plant) for two families of plants. The automatically designed controller is created by means of genetic programming using a fitness measure that attempts to optimize step response and disturbance rejection while simultaneously imposing constraints on maximum sensitivity and sensor noise attenuation. The automatically designed controller outperforms the controller designed with conventional techniques. In particular, the automatically designed controller is superior to the Astrom and Hagglund controller (1995) for all plants of both families for the integral of the time-weighted absolute error (ITAE) for a step input, the ITAE for disturbance rejection, and maximum sensitivity. Averaged over all plants of both families, the ITAE for the step input for the automatically designed controller is only 58% of the value for the conventional controller; the ITAE for disturbance rejection is 91% of the value for the conventional controller; and the maximum sensitivity for the automatically designed controller is only 85% of the value for the conventional controller. The automatically designed controller is "general" in the sense that it contains free variables and therefore provides a solution to an entire category of problems (i.e., all the plants in the two families) not merely a single instance of the problem (i.e., a particular single plant).

Reconfigurable hardware has the potential for significant performance improvements by providing support for application-specific operations. We report our experience with Chimaera, a prototype system that integrates a small and fast reconfigurable functional unit (RFU) into the pipeline of an aggressive, dynamically-scheduled superscalar processor. Chimaera is capable of performing 9-input/1-output operations on integer data. We discuss the Chimaera C compiler that automatically maps computations for execution in the RFU. Chimaera is capable of: (1) collapsing a set of instructions into RFU operations, (2) converting control-flow into RFU operations, and (3) supporting a more powerful fine-grain data-parallel model than that supported by current multimedia extension instruction sets (for integer operations), Using a set of multimedia and communication applications bye show that even with simple optimizations. The Chimaera C compiler is able to map 22% of all instructions to the RFU on the average. A variety of computations are mapped into RFU operations ranging from as simple as add/sub-shift pairs to operations of more than 10 instructions including several branches. Timing experiments demonstrate that for a 4-way out-of-order superscalar processor Chimaera results in average performance improvements of 21%, assuming a very aggressive core processor design (most pessimistic RFU latency model) and communication overheads from and to the RFU.
