In this paper, we propose a novel GPU-friendly algorithm for the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) simulation for weakly compressible fluids. The major goal of our algorithm is to implement a GPU-based SPH simulation that can simulate and render a large number of particles at interactive speed. Additionally, our algorithm exhibits the following three features. Firstly, our algorithm supports adaptive sampling of the fluids. Particles can be split into several sub-particles in geometrically complex regions to provide a more accurate simulation. At the same time, nearby particles deep inside the fluids are merged to a single particle to reduce the number of particles. Secondly, the fluids are visualized by directly computing the intersection between ray and an isosurface defined by the surface particles. A dynamic particle grouping algorithm and equation solver are employed to quickly find the ray-isosurface intersection. Thirdly, based on the observation that the SPH simulation is a naturally parallel algorithm, the whole SPH simulation, including the adaptive sampling of the fluids as well as surface particle rendering, is executed on the GPU to fully utilize the computational power and parallelism of modern graphics hardware. Our experimental data shows that we can simulate about 50K adaptively sampled particles, or up to 120K particles in the fixed sampling case at a rate of approximately 20 time steps per second. © The Eurographics Association 2008.

Animation is frequently utilized to visually depict change in time-varying data sets. For this task, it is a natural fit. Yet explicit animation is rarely employed for static data. We discuss the use of animation to overcome three common limitations faced by information visualization applications in the context of small-display devices: constraints on the output display, limited interaction possibilities, and high data density. We provide concrete examples of applying animation to combat such limitations for four common visualization types: geo-spatial data, treemaps, parallel coordinate displays, and large graphs. Unlike previous work which examines animation for maintaining user orientation during view changes or for displaying data variables, we discuss animation's utility for multiplexing available screen space. In the context of constrained displays, we demonstrate its ability to effectively gain screen resolution, to quickly uncover trends, to help find unexpected data patterns, and to reduce visual clutter.

The recent advances in high performance computing, storage and networking technologies have enabled fundamental changes in current climate research. While sharing datasets and results is already common practice in climate modeling, direct sharing of the analysis and visualization process is also becoming feasible. We report our efforts to develop a capability, coupled with the Earth System Grid (ESG), for sharing an entire executable workspace of visualization among collaborators. Evolutionary history of visualizations of research findings can also be captured and shared The data intensive nature of the visualization system requires using several advanced techniques of visualization and parallel computing. With visualization clients implemented through standard web browsers, however, the ensuing complexity is made transparent to end-users. We demonstrate the efficacy of our system using cutting edge climate datasets.

Performance analysis tools based on event tracing are important for understanding the complex computational activities and communication patterns in high performance applications. The purpose of these tools is to help applications scale well to large numbers of processors. However, the tools themselves have to be scalable. As application problem sizes grow larger to exploit larger machines, the volume of performance trace data generated becomes unmanagable especially as we scale to tens of thousands of processors. Simultaneously, at analysis time, the amount of information that has to be presented to a human analyst can also become overwhelming. This paper investigates the effectiveness of employing heuristics and clustering techniques in a scalability framework to determine a subset of processors whose detailed event traces should be retained. It is a form of compression where we retain information from processors with high signal content. We quantify the reduction in the volume of performance trace data generated by NAMD, a molecular dynamics simulation application implemented using CHARM++. We show that, for the known performance problem of poor application grainsize, the quality of the trace data preserved by this approach is sufficient to highlight the problem. ©2008 ieee.

parallel performance has been a challenging topic in streamline visualization for large unstructured flow datasets on parallel distributed-memory computers. It depends strongly on domain partitions. Unsuitable partitions often lead to severe load imbalance and high frequent communications among the domain partitions. To address the problem, we present an approach to flow data partitioning taking account of flow directions and features. Multilevel spectral graph bisection method is employed to reduce communication and synchronization overhead among distributed domains. Edge weights in the corresponding adjacent matrix is defined based on an anisotropic local diffusion operator which assigns strong coupling along flow direction and weak coupling orthogonal to flow. Meanwhile, the distributions of seed points and flow features such as vortex structure are also considered in partitioning so as to obtain good load balance. The experimental results are given to show the feasibility and effectiveness of our method.

This paper describes how we have used a self-adapting middleware to implement a distributed and adaptive volume rendering application. The middleware we have used is GATES (grid-based adaptive execution on streams), which allows processing of streaming data in a distributed environment. A challenge in supporting such an application on streaming data is to balance the visualization quality and the speed of processing, which can be automatically done by the GATES middleware. We describe how we divide the application into a number of processing stages, and what adaptation parameters we use. Our experimental studies have focused on evaluating the self-adaptation enabled by the middleware, and measuring the overhead associated with the use of middleware.

In this paper, we consider the interaction between application programmers and tools that automatically search a space of application-level parameters that are believed to impact the performance of an application significantly. We study performance tuning of a large scientific application, the visualization component of a molecular dynamics simulation. The key contribution of the approach is the use of high-level programmer-specified models of the expected performance behavior of individual parameters. We use these models to reduce the search space associated with the range of parameter values and achieve results that perform close to that of a more exhaustive search of the parameter space. With this case study, we show the importance of appropriate parameter selection, with the difference between best-case and worst-case performance with a particular input data set and processor configuration of up to a factor of 17. We show that through the use of models, we can drastically reduce search time, examining only 0.3% to 5% of the search space, and usually select an implementation that is close to the best performance, within 0.84% to 15%, even though the models are not completely accurate.

Synthetic Aperture Radar data presents specific problems for interactive visualization. The high amount of multiplicative speckle noise has to be reduced. The high dynamic range of the amplitude data must be mapped to the lower dynamic range of display devices in a way that makes image features appropriately visible. In addition to interactive navigation in the data, it is desirable to allow interactive selection of despeckling and dynamic range reduction methods and adjustment of their parameters. graphics processing units (GFUs) can be seen as ubiquitous parallel coprocessors with extreme computational power. In this paper, we propose a GPU-based framework for interactive visualization of SAR data. data management techniques are used to make full use of the GFU. We reworked well-known despeckling and dynamic range reduction techniques for the GPU programming model and implemented them in our framework. Both navigation in large data sets and adjustment of processing parameters are fully interactive. © 2007 ieee.

A challenge in data analysis and visualization is to build new-generation software tools and systems to truly accelerate scientific discoveries. The recent focus of Princeton's next-generation software project is to investigate how to develop new-generation data analysis and visualization capabilities for genomic scientists to analyze high-throughput genomic dataseis. This paper describes the software tools we have recently developed to enable dynamic, large-scale data analysis and visualization of multiple dataseis on large-scale, high-resolution display wall systems. Our initial experience with the deployed tools at Princeton's Lewis-Sigler Institute for Integrative Genomics is very encouraging. Scientists can effectively learn new knowledge from multiple datasets, find new insights, and generate new hypotheses that are not possible with current methods. © 2007 ieee.
