Categorical data dimensions appear in many real-world data sets, but few visualization methods exist that properly deal with them. parallel Sets are a new method for the visualization and interactive exploration of categorical data that shows data frequencies instead of the individual data points. The method is based on the axis layout of parallel coordinates, with boxes representing the categories and parallelograms between the axes showing the relations between categories. In addition to the visual representation, we designed a rich set of interactions. parallel Sets allow the user to interactively remap the data to new categorizations and, thus, to consider more data dimensions during exploration and analysis than usually possible. At the same time, a metalevel, semantic representation of the data is built. Common procedures, like building the cross product of two or more dimensions, can be performed automatically, thus complementing the interactive visualization. We demonstrate parallel Sets by analyzing a large CRM data set, as well as investigating housing data from two US states.

This paper presents a procedure for virtual autopsies based on interactive 3D visualizations of large scale, high resolution data from CT-scans of human cadavers. The procedure is described using examples from forensic medicine and the added value and future potential of virtual autopsies is shown from a medical and forensic perspective. Based on the technical demands of the procedure state-of-the-art volume rendering techniques are applied and refined to enable real-time, full body virtual autopsies involving gigabyte sized data on standard GPUs. The techniques applied include transfer function based data reduction using level-of-detail selection and multi-resolution rendering techniques. The paper also describes a data management component for large, out-of-core data sets and an extension to the GPU-based raycaster for efficient dual TF rendering. Detailed benchmarks of the pipeline are presented using data sets from forensic cases.

Realizing operational analytics solutions where large and complex data must be analyzed in a time-critical fashion entails integrating many different types of technology. This paper focuses on an interdisciplinary combination of scientific data management and visualization/analysis technologies targeted at reducing the time required for data filtering, querying, hypothesis testing and knowledge discovery in the domain of network connection data analysis. We show that use of compressed bitmap indexing can quickly answer queries in an interactive visual data analysis application, and compare its performance with two alternatives for serial and parallel filtering/querying on 2.5 billion records' worth of network connection data collected over a period of 42 weeks. Our approach to visual network connection data exploration centers on two primary factors: interactive ad-hoc and multiresolution query formulation and execution over n dimensions and visual display of the n-dimensional histogram results. This combination is applied in a case study to detect a distributed network scan and to then identify the set of remote hosts participating in the attack. Our approach is sufficiently general to be applied to a diverse set of data understanding problems as well as used in conjunction with a diverse set of analysis and visualization tools. © 2006 ieee.

We describe the software architecture of the Manta interactive ray tracer and describe its application in engineering and scientific visualization. Although numerous ray tracing software packages have been developed, much of the traditional design wisdom needs to be updated to provide support for interactivity, high degrees of parallelism, and modem packet-based acceleration structures. We discuss situations that are normally not considered when designing a batch ray tracer, and present methods to overcome those challenges. This paper advocates a forward looking programming model for interactive ray tracing that uses reconfigurable components to achieve flexibility while achieving scalability on large numbers of processors. Manta employs data structures motivated by modem micro-processor design that can exploit instruction-level parallelism. We discuss the design tradeoffs and the performance achieved for this system.

We consider the problem of isosurface extraction and rendering for large scale time varying data. Such datasets have been appearing at an increasing rate especially from physics-based simulations, and can range in size from hundreds of gigabytes to tens of terabytes. We develop a new simple indexing scheme, which makes use of the concepts of the interval tree and the span space data structures. The new scheme enables isosurface extraction and rendering in I/O optimal time, using more compact indexing structure and more effective bulk data movement than the previous schemes. Moreover, our indexing scheme can be easily extended to a multiprocessor environment in which each processor has access to its own local disk. The resulting parallel algorithm is provably efficient and scalable. That is, it achieves load balancing across the processors independent of the isovalue, with almost no overhead in the total amount of work relative to the sequential algorithm. We conduct a large number of experimental tests on the University of Maryland visualization Cluster using the Richtmyer-Meshkov instability dataset, and obtain results that consistently validate the efficiency and the scalability of our algorithm. © 2006 ieee.

To allow a more rigorous understanding of animal gene regulatory networks, the Berkeley Drosophila Transcription Network Project (BDTNP) has developed a suite of methods that support quantitative, computational analysis of three-dimensional (3D) gene expression patterns with cellular resolution in early Drosophila embryos. Here we report the first components of a visualization tool, PointCloudXplore, that allows the relationships between different gene's expression to be analyzed using the BDTNP's datasets. PointCloudXplore uses the established visualization techniques of multiple views, brushing, and linking to support the analysis of high-dimensional datasets that describe many genes' expression. Each of the views in PointCloudXplore shows a different gene expression data property. Brushing is used to select and emphasize data associated with defined subsets of embryo cells within a view. Linking is used to show in additional views the expression data for a group of cells that have first been highlighted as a brush in a single view, allowing further data subset properties to be determined. In PointCloudXplore, physical views of the data are linked to parallel coordinates. Physical views show the spatial relationships between different genes' expression patterns within the embryo. parallel coordinates, on the other hand, show only some features of each gene's expression, but allow simultaneous analysis of data for many more genes than would be possible in a physical view. We have developed several extensions to standard parallel coordinates to facilitate brushing the visualization of 3D gene expression data. © The Eurographics Association 2006.

Many large-scale scientific simulations generate large, structured multi-dimensional datasets. data is stored at various intervals on high performance I/O storage systems for checkpointing, post-processing, and visualization. data storage is very I/O intensive and can dominate the overall running time of an application, depending on the characteristics of the I/O access pattern. Our NCIO benchmark determines how I/O characteristics greatly affect performance (up to 2 orders of magnitude) and provides scientific application developers with guidelines for improvement. In this paper, we examine the impact of various I/O parameters and methods when using the MPI-IO interface to store structured scientific data in an optimized parallel file system

In this paper, we present the design and implementation of Ovid, a browser for grid-related information. The key goal of Ovid is to support the seamless navigation of users in the grid information space. Key aspects of Ovid are: (i) a set of navigational primitives, which are designed to cope with problems such as network disorientation and information overloading; (ii) a small set of Ovid views, which present the end-user with high-level, visual abstractions of grid information; these abstractions correspond to simple models that capture essential aspects of a grid infrastructure; (iii) support for embedding and implementing hyperlinks that connect related entities represented within different information views; (iv) a plug-in mechanism, which enables the seamless integration with Ovid of third-party software that retrieves and displays data from various grid information sources; and (v) a modular software design, which allows the easy integration of different visualization algorithms that support the graphical representation of large amounts of grid-related information in the context of Ovid's views
