We have developed an interactive, scalable visualization tool for analyzing the behavior of users of a web site. Our system not only shows site topology and traffic flow, but by segmenting site traffic data based on user attributes, including demographic data and purchase history, we can present a more complete picture of web site usage. This can lead to a more focussed analysis that allows direct comparison between user segments, and ultimately a deeper understanding of how users interact with a site. The tool is designed for real world use, and we present a usage study of the tool by analyzing the data of a failed "dot-com".

We compare three remote visualization strategies used for interactive exploration of large data sets in distributed environments: image-based rendering, parallel visualization servers, and subsampling. We review each strategy and provide details for an adaptive multiresolution subsampling technique that we have developed. To determine the regimes for which each approach is most cost-effective, we develop performance models to study the computation and communication costs associated with the common visualization task of isosurface generation. Using these models, we analyze a number of scenarios in which the hardware system configurations and task complexity change and offer general recommendations for the use of each strategy. For one particular strategy, subsampling,we further investigate the tradeoffs between multiresolution and uniform grid methods in terms of performance and approximation errors. © 2001 ieee.

We introduce the notion of Graph Sketches. They can be thought of as visual indices that guide the navigation of a multi-graph too large to fit on the available display. We adhere to the Visual Information-Seeking Mantra: Overview first, zoom and filter, then details on demand. Graph Sketches are incorporated into MGV, an integrated visualization and exploration system for massive multi-digraph navigation. We highlight the main algorithmic and visualization tasks behind the computation of Graph Sketches and illustrate several application scenarios. Graph Sketches will be used to guide the navigation of multi-digraphs defined on vertex sets with sizes ranging from 100 to 250 million vertices.

We present an open-source visualization application with a data-parallel application architecture. The architecture is unique because is uses the Tcl scripting language to synchronize the user interface with the visualization ToolKit (VTK) parallel visualization pipeline and parallel-rendering module. The resulting application shows scalable performance, and is easily extendable because of its simple modular architecture. We demonstrate the application with a 9.8 gigabyte structured-grid ocean model.

Discusses our efforts to improve the performance of the high-accuracy (HIAC) volume rendering system, based on cell projection, which is used to display unstructured, scientific data sets for analysis. The parallelization of HIAC, using Pthreads and MPI API's, resulted in significant speedup, but interactive frame rates are not yet attainable for very large data sets.

The fast increasing size of datasets in scientific computing, mechanical engineering, or virtual medicine is quickly exceeding the graphics capabilities of modern computers. Toolkits for the large model visualization address this problem by combining efficient geometric techniques, such as occlusion and visibility culling, mesh reduction, and efficient rendering. We introduce Jupiter, a toolkit for the interactive visualization of large models which exploits the above mentioned techniques. Jupiter was originally developed by Hewlett-Packard and EAI, and it has been equipped with new functionality by the University of Tubingen, as being part, of the Kelvin project. An initial version of Jupiter has been released as open source.

A new method for the visualization of huge hierarchical data structures is presented. The method is based on the observation that we can easily see the branches, leaves, and their arrangement in a botanical tree, despite of the large number of elements. The strand model of Holton is used to convert an abstract tree into a geometric model. Non-leaf nodes are mapped to branches and child nodes to sub-branches. A naive application of this model leads to unsatisfactory results, hence it is tailored to suit our purposes better Continuing branches are emphasized, long branches are contracted, and sets of leaves are shown as fruit. The method is applied to the visualization of directory structures. The elements, directories and files, as well as their relations can easily be extracted, thereby showing that the use of methods from botanical modeling can be effective for information visualization.

Due to the impressive price-performance of today's PC-based graphics accelerator cards, Sandia National Laboratories is attempting to use PC clusters to render extremely large data sets in interactive applications. This paper describes a sort-last parallel rendering system running on a PC cluster that is capable of rendering enormous amounts of geometry onto high-resolution tile displays by taking advantage of the spatial coherency that is inherent in our data. Furthermore, it is capable of scaling to larger sized input data or higher resolution displays by increasing the size of the cluster. Our prototype is now capable of rendering 120 million triangles per second on a 12 mega-pixel display.

Our scalable isosurface visualization solution on a commodity off-the-shelf (COTS) cluster is an end-to-end parallel and progressive platform, from the initial data access to the final display. We focus on the back end scalability by introducing a fully parallel and out-of-core isosurface extraction algorithm. It partitions the volume data according to its workload spectrum for load balancing and creates an I/O-optimal external interval tree to minimize the number of I/O operations of loading large data from disk. It achieves scalability by using both parallel processing and parallel disks. Interactive browsing of extracted isosurfaces is made possible by using parallel isosurface extraction and rendering in conjunction with a specialized piece of image compositing hardware called the Metabuffer. We also describe an isosurface compression scheme that is efficient for isosurface processing.

Treemaps, a space-filling method of visualizing large hierarchical data sets, are receiving increasing attention. Several algorithms have been proposed to create more useful displays by controlling the aspect ratios of the rectangles that make up a treemap. While these algorithms do improve visibility of small items in a single layout, they introduce instability over time in the display of dynamically changing data, and fail to preserve an ordering of the underlying data. This paper introduces the ordered treemap, which addresses these two shortcomings. The ordered treemap algorithm ensures that items near each other in the given order will be near each other in the treemap layout. Using experimental evidence from Monte Carlo trials, we show that compared to other layout algorithms ordered treemaps are more stable while maintaining relatively favorable aspect ratios of the constituent rectangles. A second test set uses stock market data.
