One of the primary tasks in mining distributed textual data is feature extraction. The widespread digitization of information has created a wealth of data that requires novel approaches to feature extraction in a distributed environment. We propose a massively parallel model for feature extraction that employs unused cycles on networks of PCs/work-stations in a highly distributed environment. We have developed an analytical model of the time and communication complexity of the feature extraction process in this environment based on feature extraction algorithms developed in our textual data mining research with HDDI(TM) [1] [18] [20]. We show that speedups linear in the number of processors are achievable for applications involving reduction operations based on a novel, parallel pipelined model of execution. We are in the process of validating our analytical model with empirical observations based on the extraction of features from a large number of pages on the World Wide Web.

A parallel single level store system (PSLS) integrates a shared virtual memory and a parallel file system. Managing the data globally it provides programmers of scientific applications with the attractive shared memory programming model combined with a large and efficient file system in a cluster. We present a cheap and efficient two-level checkpointing approach enabling a PSLS to tolerate failures. The first level checkpointing algorithm is very efficient and saves data in memory but requires a large amount of memory space. When memories are saturated, an alternative algorithm, saving a checkpoint on disks is implemented. Performance results present the impact of different variants of the checkpointing algorithms. © 2001 ieee.

Clusters of workstations are a popular alternative to integrated parallel systems designed and built by a vendor Besides their huge cumulative processing power they also provide a large data storage capacity which allows efficient implementations of large-scale applications which are I/O intensive, This paper proposes a language, compiler and runtime software solution to the problem of parallel I/O on clusters. The proposal is presented in the context Of High Performance Fortran and its compilation and runtime environment that is being developed at the University of Vienna. The system provides efficient support for explicit I/O operations on parallel files, accesses to sections of multi-dimensional arrays stored in parallel files, checkpoint/restart operations, and time step output and input operations. The paper also presents experimental performance results using the implementation of the developed software on a Beowulf-class cluster system.

Many real-world e-commerce applications require the mining of large volumes of transaction data to extract marketing and sales information. This paper describes the Directed Association visualization (DAV) system that visually associates product affinities and relationships for large volumes of e-commerce transaction data. DAV maps transaction data items and their relationships to vertices, edges, and positions on a visual spherical surface. DAV encompasses several innovative techniques (1) items are positioned according to their associations to show the strength of their relationships;(2) edges with arrows are used to represent the implication directions;(3) a mass-spring engine is integrated into a visual data mining platform to provide a self-organized graph. We have applied this system successfully to market basket analysis and e-customer profiling Internet applications. © 2001 Eurographics Association. All rights reserved.

With the recent advances in commodity graphics hardware performance, PC clusters have become an attractive alternative to traditional high-end graphics workstations. The main challenge is to develop parallel rendering algorithms that work well within the memory constraints and communication limitations of a networked cluster. Previous systems have required the entire 3D scene to be replicated in memory on every PC. While this approach can take advantage of view-dependent load balancing algorithms and thus largely avoid the problems of inter-process communication, it limits the scalability of the system to the memory capacity of a single PC. We present a k-way replication approach in which each 3D primitive of a large scene is replicated on k out of n PCs (k/spl Lt/n). The key idea is to support 3D models larger than the memory capacity of any single PC, while retaining the reduced communication overheads of dynamic view-dependent partitioning. In this paper, we investigate algorithms for distributing copies of primitives among PCs and for dynamic load balancing under the constraints of partial replication. Our main result is that the parallel rendering efficiencies achieved with small replication factors are similar to the ones measured with full replication. By storing one-fourth of Michelangelo's David model (800 MB) on each of 24 PCs (each with 256 MB of memory), our system is able to render 40 million polygons/second (65 % efficiency).

Surface reconstruction provides a powerful paradigm for modeling shapes from samples. For point cloud data with only geometric coordinates as input, Delaunay based surface reconstruction algorithms are shown to be quite effective both in theory and practice. However, a major complaint against Delaunay based methods is that they are slow and cannot handle large data. We extend the COCONE algorithm to handle supersize data. This is the first reported Delaunay based surface reconstruction algorithm that can handle data containing more than a million sample points on a modest machine.

In this case study we present an open-source visualization application with a data-parallel novel application architecture. The architecture is unique because is uses the Tcl scripting language to synchronize the user interface with the VTK parallel visualization pipeline and parallel-rendering module. The resulting application shows scalable performance, and is easily extendable because of its simple modular architecture. We demonstrate the application with a 9.8 gigabyte structured-grid ocean model.

data Distribution Management (DDM) is a High Level Architecture/Run-time Infrastructure (HLA/RTI) service that manages the distribution of state updates and interaction information in large scale distributed simulations, limits and controls the volume of data exchanged during the simulation. In this paper we focus upon the following three DDM schemes: Region-Based, Fixed and Dynamic Grid-Based techniques. In an effort to determine the most efficient model for applying the DDM service, we developed a mini-RTY Kit framework and propose a set of benchmarks to compare these DDM schemes. Using the RTI Kit, we performed extensive simulation experiments and present our analysis of the results of numerous federation executions.

visualization of particle traces provides intuitive and efficient means for the exploration and analysis of complex vector fields. The paper presents a method suitable for the real-time visualization of arbitrarily large time-varying vector fields in virtual environments. We describe an out-of-core scheme in which two distinct pre-processing and rendering components enable real-time data streaming and visualization. The presented approach yields low-latency application start-up times and small memory footprints. The described system was used to implement a "volumetric fog lance," which can emit up to 60000 particles into a flow field while maintaining an interactive frame rate of 60 frames per second. All algorithms were specifically designed to support commodity hardware. The proof-of-concept system is running on a low-cost Linux workstation equipped with a 120 GB E-IDE RAID (redundant array of inexpensive disk) system.

This paper presents the results of a study of dynamic parallel media processing using Speculative Broadcast Loop (SBL), a speculative run-time loop-level parallelization method. Due to processing regularity, multimedia applications typically contain extensive parallelism. Subword parallelism methods are commonly used to support data parallelism between independent loop iterations in inner loops, but much of the data parallelism in media processing resides in outer loops and cannot be supported with subword parallelism. larger-scale parallel methods are needed to enable use of the full range of data parallelism in multimedia. Because static parallel compilation methods are often unable to recognize all parallelism at compile time, a run-time method is assumed for the speculative execution of potentially parallel loops. The SBL run-time method combines SIMD parallelism with large-scale speculation for supporting data parallelism in multimedia. © 2001 ieee.
