Presents a built-in-self test (BIST) technique to implement the parallel approach for testing multi-port memories. This approach is based on the parallel execution of the testing process so that inter-port faults (shorts and coupling faults) can be detected at no loss of coverage and with no increase in the number of tests compared with a single-port memory. In the proposed hardware scheme, address data and control sequences are generated using a BIST controller originally designed for a single port memory; a simple logic unit is also used to interface the signals for BIST to the memory ports. It is shown that the proposed BIST implementation is O(N log N), where N is the number of ports.

It is very common that modern large-scale scientific applications employ multiple compute and storage resources in a heterogeneously distributed environment. Working effectively and efficiently in such an environment is one of the major concerns for designing meta-data management systems. The authors present an integrated graphical user interface (GUI) that makes the entire environment virtually an easy-to-use control platform for managing complex programs and their large datasets. To hide the I/O latency when the the user carries out interactive visualization, aggressive prefetching and caching techniques are employed in our GUI. The performance numbers show that the design of our Java GUI has achieved the goals of both high performance and ease-of-use.

Different modalities in biomedical imaging, like CT, MRI and PET scanners,, provide detailed cross-sectional views of the human anatomy. The imagery obtained from these scanning devices are typically large-scale data sets whose sizes vary from several hundred megabytes to about one hundred gigabytes, making them impossible to be stored on a regular local hard drive. San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) maintains a high-performance storage system (HPSS) where these large-scale data sets can be stored. Members of the National Partnership for Advanced Computational Infrastructure (NPACI) have implemented a Scalable visualization Toolkit (Vistools), which is used to access the data sets stored on HPSS and also to develop different applications on top of the toolkit. 2D cross-sectional images are extracted from the data sets stored oft HPSS using Vistools, and these 2D cross-sections are then transformed into smaller hierarchical representations using a wavelet transformation. This makes it easier to transmit them over the network and allows for progressive image refinement. The transmitted 2D cross-sections are then transformed and reconstructed into a 3D volume. The 3D reconstruction has been implemented using texture-mapping functions of Java3D. Sub-volumes that represent a region of interest are transmitted and rendered at a higher resolution than the rest of the data set.

In the pattern recognition on the large volume of satellite images, the inference time is much increased. In the remote sensing data having 4 wavebands, 778 training patterns are learned. Each land cover pattern is classified by using 159900 patterns including trained patterns. In the fuzzy classification, 778 fuzzy rules are generated. Each fuzzy rule has 4 fuzzy variables in the condition part. Therefore, high performance parallel fuzzy inference architecture is needed. In this paper, we propose a novel parallel fuzzy inference system on a T3E parallel computer. In this, fuzzy rules are distributed and executed simultaneously. The ONE-To-ALL algorithm is used to broadcast the fuzzy input to the all nodes. The results of the MIN/MAX operations are transferred to the output processor by the ALL-TO-ONE algorithm. By parallel processing of the fuzzy rules, the parallel fuzzy inference algorithm extracts match parallelism and achieves a good speed factor. This system can be used in a large expert system that has many inference variables in the condition and the consequent part.

This paper presents a framework of applications based on AR technologies. This framework is designed for spatial data access, on-site navigation, as well as real-time video augmentation, and is applicable to different scenarios in large industrial settings. In the core of our framework lies a mobile computer equipped with a camera. The camera observes the environment for visual coded markers. These markers are registered to a global coordinate system through available drawings or floor plans. The tracker software processes images coming from the camera at moderate frame rates (typically 12 fps) and estimates the location of the user. The system then can guide the user through the environment, provide the user with location relevant data from a spatial database, and augment the view of the user through the camera. data exchange is done via a wireless network and the user interface allows the user to access various types of data without considerable effort.

The binary-swap and the parallel-pipelined methods are two popular image composition methods for volume rendering on distributed memory multicomputers. However, these methods either restrict the number of processors to a power of two or require many steps to transform image data that results in high communication overheads. In this paper, we present an efficient image composition method, the rotate-tiling (RT), for parallel volume rendering on distributed memory multicomputers. The RT method can fully utilize all available processors and minimize the communication overheads. In addition, we provide data compression method, the template run-length encoding (TRLE), to further reduce the communication data size. To evaluate the performance of the RT method, we compare the proposed method with the binary-swap method and the parallel-pipelined method. Both theoretical analysis and experimental test are conducted. In the theoretical analysis, we analyze the best performance bound of the RT method in terms of the startup time, the data transmission time, the number of processors, and the number of initial block of a sub-image. In the experimental test, we have implemented these three methods on an SP2 parallel machine. Three volume datasets are used as test samples. The experimental results show that our method outperforms the binary-swap and the parallel-pipelined methods for all test samples and match the results analyzed in the theoretical analysis. For the TRLE method, the experimental results show that the TRLE method can further reduce the composition time for these three methods.

Whereas much of the previous work on data mining has focused on mining data in relational databases, we discuss mining objects. Object models are very popular for representing multimedia data, and therefore we need to mine object databases to extract useful information from the large quantities of multimedia data. We first describe the motivation for multimedia data mining with examples and then discuss object mining with focus on text, image, video and audio mining. We also address the need for real time data mining for multimedia applications.

One of the primary tasks in mining distributed textual data is feature extraction. The widespread digitization of information has created a wealth of data that requires novel approaches to feature extraction in a distributed environment. We propose a massively parallel model for feature extraction that employs unused cycles on networks of PCs/workstations in a highly distributed environment. We have developed an analytical model of the time and communication complexity of the feature extraction process in this environment based on feature extraction algorithms developed in our textual data mining research with HDDI/sup TM/ (Hierarchical Distributed Dynamic Indexing). We show that speedups linear in the number of processors are achievable for applications involving reduction operations based on a novel, parallel pipelined model of execution. We are in the process of validating our analytical model with empirical observations based on the extraction of features from a large number of pages on the World Wide Web.

This paper presents JECho, a Java-based communication infrastructure for collaborative high performance applications. JECho implements a publish/subscribe communication paradigm, permitting distributed concurrent sets of components to provide interactive service to collaborating end users via event channels. JECho's eager handler concept allows individual event subscribers to dynamically tailor event flows to adapt to runtime changes in component behaviors and needs, and to changes in platform resources. Benchmark results suggest that JECho may be used for building large-scale, high-performance event delivery systems which can efficiently adapt to changes in user needs or the environment using eager handlers.

In this paper, performance characteristics of the Itanium/sup TM/ processor, the first implementation of the Itanium/sup TM/ Processor Family (IPF), is examined for the task of data encryption using public key and symmetric key encryption algorithms. The Itanium/sup TM/ processor key performance characteristics: wide issue width, large number of functional units, and large number of registers are examined for the task of performing multi-precision arithmetic dominant in public key algorithms and the computing requirements of symmetric key encryption algorithms.
