This paper proposes a parallel and distributed approach to achieve the recognition of airport runways in aerial images, by combining Message Passing Interface (MPI) standard communication protocol with Canny Edge detector and Radon Transform. The reason for adopting a parallel architecture is obtaining speed and efficiency when running on multiple processors from a multi-core and hyper-threaded platform. The airport runways recognition application is implemented in C++ and uses MPI and CImg library for image processing. The latter provides instruments for noise removal (Gaussian filtering), edge finding (Canny Edge detector) and line extraction (Radon Transform), whereas the former allows for distributing independent parallel computation over a given number of cores while avoiding any intercommunication overhead. The presented approach proved a good performance on the recognition of the airport runways through the experimental results, with an average of 0.4 s for the overall computational time per image (including reading from and writing to files).

It is our great pleasure to welcome you to the first International workshop on Cloud, IoT and Fog Security - CIFS 2019 collocated with the 12th ieee/ACM International Conference on Utility and Cloud Computing - UCC 2019. Welcome to Auckland!The processing of sensitive information is a cross-cutting topic unimpressed by imaginary system boundaries. In many scenarios, sensors or actors are connected to on-site compute units and fog systems which themselves are connected to clouds. The transmission, processing and storage of information needs to be secured across the entire chain or network, using diverse mechanisms often outside the control of the application developer. This workshop aims to discuss recent advances around holistic security aspects involving availability, integrity, confidentiality, non-repudiability and other guaranteeable *** six peer-reviewed research papers and one impulse talk, this workshop combines the most pressing topics on the intersection between distributed systems and (cyber-)security aspects. Two papers investigate the use of blockchains: «Intelligent Price Alert System for Blockchain-based Digital Assets» and «Blockchain as a Trusted Component in Cloud SLA Verification». Smart Grid provides a flexible and powerful framework to integrate distributed Energy Resources (DER). DER consisting of energy sources (such as renewable, conventional, storage) and loads. Based on application, there can be different modes of operating. It can operate in parallel with, or independently from, the main grid. Because of social, economic, and environmental benefits, the demands of DER system is increasing gradually. Combination of DERs and Loads with control units forms a miniature grid which is known as Microgrid. Integrating of DERs to the Microgrid system has two aspects: electrical and communication. Electrical integration has their own challenges which are addressed in ieee 1547 standard. However, challenges related to communication and information integration of multi vendor DERs system is still open. Currently, IEC 61850-7-420 is the only standard which defines information model for DERs, but it is not completely accepted by DER manufacturers. On the other side, IEC 61850 mapped communication protocols like MMS, GOSSE, DNP3 etc. are substation protocols and may not suitable to fulfill DERs to DERs communication demands. In this paper, we provide an overview of Smart Grid conceptual framework and highlight DER scope. We discuss DER system components, various applications and required communication features. We review IEC 61850 mapped communication protocol MMS and identify the limitation for using in DERs communication.

Given a sparse matrix A, the selected inversion algorithm is an efficient method for computing certain selected elements of A-1. These selected elements correspond to all or some nonzero elements of the LU factors of A. In many ways, the types of matrix updates performed in the selected inversion algorithm are similar to those performed in the LU factorization, although the sequence of operations is different. In the context of LU factorization, it is known that the leftlooking and right-looking algorithms exhibit different memory access and data communication patterns, and hence different behavior on shared memory and distributed memory parallel machines. Corresponding to right-looking and left-looking LU factorization, the selected inversion algorithm can be organized as a left-looking or a right-looking algorithm. The parallel right-looking version of the algorithm has been developed in [9]. The sequence of operations performed in this version of the selected inversion algorithm is similar to those performed in a left-looking LU factorization algorithm. In this paper, we describe the left-looking variant of the selected inversion algorithm, and present an efficient implementation of the algorithm for shared memory machines using a task parallel method. We demonstrate that with the task scheduling features provided by OpenMP 4.0, the left-looking selected inversion algorithm can scale well both on the Intel Haswell multicore architecture and on the Intel Knights Landing (KNL) manycore architecture up to 16 and 64 cores, respectively. On the KNL architecture, we observe that the maximum parallel efficiency achieved by the left-looking selected inversion algorithm can be as high as 62% even when all 64 cores are used, despite the inherent asynchronous nature of the computation and communication patterns in sparse matrix operations. Compared to the right-looking selected inversion algorithm, the left-looking formulation facilitates efficient pipelining of operations

advances in wireless communication, digital systems and micro-electronic-mechanical system technologies led to the development of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) which are used in various critical real-world applications. The fact that WSNs are low cost and eliminate the need for infrastructure led to their replacing traditional networks in area/event monitoring and tracking applications. WSNs consist of small and resource-limited sensor nodes, due to which several problems arise in the WSN development process. One of these problems is coverage. Providing the best coverage with a minimum number of sensor nodes is an NP-hard problem known as the maximum coverage sensor deployment problem (MCSDP). Genetic Algorithms (GAs) have been proved effective in solving optimization problems in many different disciplines (increasing coverage in WSNs, image processing, route planning, etc.). In this study, a GPU-based parallel GA solution for increasing the coverage of a given homogeneous WSN topology in a 2-D Euclidean area is proposed which is the first time this technique is used and parallelized on GPUs to the best of our knowledge. Finally, performance results of the proposed algorithm are compared to the previous work with the emphasis on the achieved performance improvement.

Acoustic sensing has brought forth the advances of prosperous applications such as gesture recognition. Specifically, ambient acoustic sensing has drawn many contentions due to the ease of use property. Unfortunately, the inherent ambient noise is the major reason for unstable gesture recognition. In this work, we propose "SoundWrite II", which is an improved version of our previously designed system. Compared with our previous design, we utilize the two threshold values to identify the effective signals from the original noisy input, and leverage the MFCC (Mel frequency cepstral coefficient) to extract the stable features from different gestures. These enhancements could effectively improve the noise tolerant performance for previous design. Implementation on the Android system has realized the real time processing of the feature extraction and gesture recognition. Extensive evaluations have validated our design, where the noise tolerant property is fully tested under different experimental settings and the recognition accuracy could be 91% with 7 typical gestures.

Simulating systems with evolving relational structures on massively parallel computers require the computational work to be evenly distributed across the processing resources throughout the simulation. Adaptive, unstructured, mesh-based finite element and finite volume tools best exemplify this need. We present EnGPar and its diffusive partition improvement method that accounts for multiple application specified criteria. EnGPar's performance is compared against its predecessor, ParMA. Specifically, partition improvement results are provided on up to 512Ki processes of the Argonne Leadership Computing Facility's Mira BlueGene/Q system. © 2017 Association for Computing Machinery.

As part of the NSF funded XMS project, we are actively researching automatic detection of poorly performing HPC jobs. To aid the analysis we have generated a taxonomy of the temporal I/O patterns for HPC jobs. In this paper we describe the design of temporal pattern characterization algorithms for HPC job I/O. We have implemented these algorithms in the Open XDMoD job analysis framework. These I/O classifications include periodic patterns and a variety of characteristic non-periodic patterns. We present an analysis of the I/O patterns observed on the /scratch filesystem on an academic HPC cluster. This type of analysis can be extended to other HPC usage data such as memory, CPU and interconnect usage. Ultimately this analysis will be used to improve HPC throughput and efficiency by, for example, automatically identifying anomalous HPC jobs. © 2018 Association for Computing Machinery.
