parallel discrete event simulation (PDES) of models with fine-grained computation remains a challenging problem. We explore the usage of POSE, our parallel Object-oriented Simulation Environment, for application performance prediction on large parallel machines such as BlueGene. This study involves the simulation of communication at the packet level through a detailed network model. This presents an extremely fine-grained simulation: events correspond to the transmission and receipt of packets. Computation is minimal, communication dominates, and strong dependencies between events result in a low degree of parallelism. There is limited look-ahead capability since the outcome of many events is determined by the application whose performance the simulation is predicting. Thus conservative synchronization approaches are challenging for this type of problem. We present recent experiences and performance results for our network simulator and illustrate the utility of our simulator through prediction and validation studies for a molecular dynamics application.(1)

In this paper, we propose a low-power distributed arithmetic (DA)-based method specifically for the field programmable field array (FPGA) implementation of video processing systems. By taking advantage of the correlation of the input data and using a parallel structure, the FPGA implementation of a convolution example based on the proposed method requires only 75% of power while maintaining the same throughput compared to the existing method of [4], [5]. The proposed method can be applied to many video processing applications such as discrete cosine transform, discrete wavelet transform, discrete Fourier transform and motion estimation.

This contribution approaches the problem of scratch restoration in old movies as a optimisation's problem. The functional based on the statistical properties of the image around the scratch is optimised using an ad-hoc genetic algorithm. Given the large amount of the computational time needed by genetic algorithms, a network of standard workstations with heterogeneous operating systems has been used. Each workstation in the network works on each scratch to perform the restoration, and a specific machine works as root node with the task of distributing jobs on the network and adding the outputted restored scratches back into the image.

Software Component Frameworks are well known in the commercial business application world and now this technology is being explored with great interest as a way to build large-scale scientific applications on parallel computers. In the case of Grid systems, the current architectural model is based on the emerging web services framework. In this paper we describe progress that has been made on the Common Component Architecture model (CCA) and discuss its success and limitations when applied to problems in Grid computing. Our primary conclusion is that a component model fits very well with a services-oriented Grid, but the model of composition must allow for a very dynamic (both in space and in time) control of composition. We note that this adds a new dimension to conventional service workflow and it extends the "Inversion of Control" aspects of most component systems.

Many image processing algorithms have a very high execution time if only a processor is used for processing them. Using a SIMD parallel structure for its execution could reduce this time. This is particularly important in the case of algorithms that must be processed in real time. The use of networks of PCs is an appealing solution that besides its low cost, takes advantage from both, the high speed of actual interconnection networks, and the high-performance of PCs. In this paper we present a model that explicitly considers system parameters, network parameters, and application parameters. So, the speed and communication model of the considered network, the workstations and PCs computing power, the per-pixel computational cost of the algorithms (that can be constant or variable), and a variable number of computers have been considered.

Despite the recent advances in access control approaches applicable to grid computing, there remain issues that impede the development of effective access control for grid applications. Amongst them are the lack of context-based models for access control, and reliance on identity or capability-based access control schemes. In this paper, we propose RCBAC model which extends the RBAC with context constraints. The RCBAC mechanisms dynamically grant and adapt permissions to users based on a set of contextual information collected from the grid environments, while retaining the advantages of RBAC model.
