In the development process, software models support communication among members of the development team. Communication failures caused by software models may generate inconsistencies in the system, impairing its quality. Aiming to reduce risks of communication failures through software models, researchers can use the Directives of Communicability (DCs). The DCs were created based on Semiotic Engineering Theory and Grice's Cooperative Principle to improve the quality of communication among software development team members through software models. The aim of this paper is to present an empirical study assessing the use of DCs in the production of three software models. The results indicated that the DCs achieved the intended potential to reduce communication failures of what software models meant to those who produced them. The DCs also contributed to the quality of artifacts produced by their consumers, given that communication failures through software models can cause inconsistencies.

Enactive interfaces are information systems which are guided by action and interaction with the whole body and senses. Enactive systems are a challenging type of system to develop due to the multimodal human-technology coupling. Socio-enactive systems are an extension of this concept, bringing attention to socio-cultural values in the dynamic coupling of human and technology. While socio-enactive systems are promising for learning purposes, different aspects of the environment can impact the development of these systems in an educational context. This paper presents a framework to develop such systems, named Socio-Enactive Educational System Framework (SEES Framework). The framework is based on human-Computer Interaction and learning theories and is illustrated with a case study conducted with people of different ages. Results of the case study show that the process and use of the framework might be an alternative for the design of collaborative learning tools that allow students to express their individual values, and the framework has the potential to increase the likelihood to implement successfully such systems. © 2019 ACM.

Technological ubiquity and advances in the use of networked devices, such as smartphones, have become a fundamental element in the dynamics of information in the social environment. Social problems can be discussed in these networks, receiving the aid from these devices, in order to unite community members in a network that is strengthened for common goals, transforming the local reality. The motivation for this work lies in the fact that lack of security is one of the problems that have most afflicted Brazilians in recent years. From this reality, the main objective of this study is the development of a usability analysis model that is suitable for smartphone applications and that allows identifying of the viability of using a collaborative security application in the social context of a city in the south of Minas Gerais. Data collection was performed through the application of two questionnaires, one being a demographic survey and the other to evaluate usability with a focus on users' perception of the use of the application. The application usage scenario is family safety facing the challenges of mitigating public security issues. The analysis of the results was based on the reinterpretation of usability from the perspective of the Theory of Innovation Diffusion and the Recursive Model of Access to Technology. As a result, the study enabled conclusions pointing that this type of interpretation allows us to glimpse horizons that go beyond explicit aspects of usability, helping to understanding environmental and social factors inherent to the context of technological diffusion in a developing society.

computing has been incorporated into "things" (objects, clothes, etc.) which, using Internet protocols, are able to send and receive information, realizing ideas of ubiquity that were launched in the 1990s. Transforming a "thing" into a network node of a system that makes sense in people's environment has been a challenge for the human-Computer Interaction (IHC) discipline. In this paper we investigate and propose a Socially Aware Design (SAwD) based process for building scenarios of ubiquitous and pervasive interaction with contemporary technology, including Internet of Things (IoT) scenarios. The starting point for SAwD is understanding the problem from stakeholders' engagement to evolve a design solution together. As part of the process, a solution proposal was created, implemented and iteratively tested with some of the stakeholders under the eyes of researchers. Three iterative cycles were held in workshops with children in a hospital setting that included the observation of researchers, discussions and proposals for the evolution of the solution. At each iteration in the process the importance of people in the technological environment was highlighted, emphasized by the intertwining of technology in the activities developed in each scenario built. The evolution of the system shows that the application of SAwD from its basic premise, which is to understand the problem with the stakeholders that act as the solution's co-designers, was fundamental in the process. Study results show the effectiveness of the proposed process and suggest recommendations for the design of Internet of human Things (IoHT).

Citizen science projects engage people in activities that are part of a scientific research effort. On multi-project citizen science platforms, scientists can create projects consisting of tasks. Volunteers, in turn, participate in executing the project's tasks. Such type of platforms seeks to connect volunteers and scientists' projects, adding value to both. However, little is known about volunteer's cross-project engagement patterns and the benefits of such patterns for scientists and volunteers. This work proposes a Goal, Question, and Metric (GQM) approach to analyse volunteers' cross-project task execution patterns and employs the Semiotic Inspection Method (SIM) to analyse the communicability of the platform's cross-project features. In doing so, it investigates what are the features of platforms to foster volunteers' cross-project engagement, to what extent multi-project platforms facilitate the attraction of volunteers to perform tasks in new projects, and to what extent multi-project participation increases engagement on the platforms. Results from analyses on real platforms show that volunteers tend to explore multiple projects, but they perform tasks regularly in just a few of them;few projects attract much attention from volunteers;volunteers recruited from other projects on the platform tend to get more engaged than those recruited outside the platform. System inspection shows that platforms still lack personalised and explainable recommendations of projects and tasks.

This work encompasses the design and development of garment-based shape memory alloy (SMA) compression technology that is dynamic, low-mass, and remotely controllable. Three garment design iterations are presented, consolidated from past user studies [1], [2], [3]. The designed garment system has potential to serve as a research tool for understanding parameters necessary to create a desired compression haptic experience;for broadening the scope of medical/clinical interventions;as well as for enabling new modes of interaction between users separated by distance, especially in areas such as tele-rehabilitation and social mediated touch.

Situationally induced impairments and disabilities (SIIDs) can compromise people's use of mobile devices. factors like walking, divided attention, cold temperatures, low light levels, glare, inebriation, fear, loud noises, or rainwater can make using a device in off-desktop environments challenging and even unsafe. Unfortunately, today's mobile devices know almost nothing about their users' situations, contexts, or environments, instead employing many of the same interaction concepts found on desktop systems from the 1980s. This article presents a decade's worth of work from 2008 - 2018 in making mobile devices more situationally aware and capable of improving interaction for users experiencing SIIDs. Also presented is a categorized list of factors that can cause SIIDs, and a two-dimensional space for characterizing impairments. Seven specific research projects are summarized, which variously address walking, hand grips, divided attention, distraction, inebriation, and rainwater interference. A "sense-model-adapt" design pattern emerges from many of these projects for addressing SIIDs. Taken together, these projects demonstrate how mobile devices can be made more situationally aware and better capable of supporting users' interactions on-the-go.

Compression is a haptic stimulus used in medical interventions (e.g., compression stockings) and has the potential to be integrated into new research areas (e.g., immersive VR experiences, distributed notification mechanisms), yet remains largely understudied. This work investigates the user experience of compression garment technologies that are dynamic, remotely controllable, and low mass, to better address this research gap. Shape memory alloy-based compression garments, capable of creating spatially- and temporally- dynamic on-body compression, were designed and deployed in a user study (n=17, 8M/9F) to understand the effects of compression, and to draw insights for future compression-based applications. The major takeaways are: (1) importance of and sizing/fit, (2) individual/gender preferences and need for customizability, and (3) the relationship between context-specific stimulation and perception.

In-car human activity recognition is playing a critical role in detecting distracted driving and improving human-car interaction. Among multiple sensing technologies, WiFi-based in-car activity recognition exhibits unique advantages since it does not rely on visible light, avoids privacy leaks and is cost-efficient with integrated WiFi signals in cars. Existing WiFi-based recognition systems mostly focus on the relatively stable indoor space, which only yield reasonably good performance in limited situations. Based on our field studies, the in-car activity recognition, however, is much more complicated suffering from more impact factors. First, the external moving objects and the surrounding WiFi signals can cause various disturbances to the in-car activity sensing. Second, considering the compact in-car space, different car models can also lead to different multipath distortions. Moreover, different people can also perform activities in different shapes. Such extraneous information related to specific driving conditions, car models and human subjects is implicitly contained for training and prediction, inevitably leading to poor recognition performance for new environment and people. In this paper, we consider the impact of different domains including driving conditions, car models and human subjects on the in-car activity recognition with field measurements and experiments. We present WiCAR, a WiFi-based in-car activity recognition framework that is able to remove domain-specific information in the received signals while retaining the activity related information to the maximum extent. A deep learning architecture integrated with domain adversarial training is applied to domain independent activity recognition. Specifically, we leverage multi-adversarial domain adaptation to avoid the discriminative structures mixing up for different domains. This paper outlines an ongoing PhD dissertation research, seeking to explore the user experience of a non-traditional form of haptic modality - compression, through the use of computer-mediated on-body compression systems with embedded active materials that are capable of being simultaneously functional, remotely-controllable, and inconspicuous. The motivation for this work is to address the need to expand our understanding of different haptic sensations, in this case, the objective and subjective effects of compression on a user, as well as how might the use of active, dynamically-controllable garments affect traditional compression garment use paradigms.
