Valid design of patient-centered digital health or health information technology (IT) systems is based on a thorough and accurate understanding of both “user reality” and “clinical reality.” Type 1 Design Error (User-Reality Error) occurs when designers do not accommodate user characteristics, tasks, context of use, needs, or preferences. Type 2 Design Error (Clinical-Reality Error) occurs when designers do not accommodate the clinical reality, including biomedical knowledge, clinical workflows, and organizational requirements. Both types of errors can invalidate the design, leading to products being rejected by patient end-users or their healthcare delivery systems, product non-use or inappropriate use, and risk of harm. This paper describes our attempts to achieve valid health IT design and avoid the two design errors. We performed iterative, patient-centered design to prototype a mobile application, Power to the Patient (P2P), supporting heart failure self-care management. Our multidisciplinary team of humanfactors, cardiology, and design experts developed and iteratively refined requirements based on data collection, review, and testing with patient research participants, a patient advisory board, a clinical advisory board, and experts on the team. We describe our process and reflect on working with multiple stakeholders toward the goal of valid health IT design.
This demonstration will show how a small number of wearable tactors can improve the suitability of a multimodal system for engineering design. It is well reported in the scientific literature that depth perception in ...

Driving is a complex, continuous, and multitask process that involves driver's cognition, perception, and motor movements. The way road traffic signs and vehicle information is displayed impacts strongly driver's attention with increased mental workload leading to safety concerns. Drivers must keep their eyes on the road, but can always use some assistance in maintaining their awareness and directing their attention to potential emerging hazards. Research in perceptual and humanfactors assessment is needed for relevant and correct display of this information for maximal road traffic safety as well as optimal driver comfort. In-vehicle contextual Augmented Reality (AR) has the potential to provide novel visual feedbacks to drivers for an enhanced driving experience. In this paper, we present a new real-time approach for fast and accurate framework for traffic sign recognition, based on Cascade Deep learning and AR, which superimposes augmented virtual objects onto a real scene under all types of driving situations, including unfavorable weather conditions. Experiments results show that, by combining the Haar Cascade and deep convolutional neural networks show that the joint learning greatly enhances the capability of detection and still retains its realtime performance.

This paper presents the results of a two-fold study on the incorporation of upper limb's movement into measuring of user performance in a virtual reality (VR) based training simulation. VR simulators have been developed to assess and improve minimally invasive surgery (MIS) skills. While these simulators are currently being used, most skill evaluation methods are limited to measuring and computing performance metrics regarding the MIS tool tip movement. In this study, a VR simulator is developed to measure and analyze the movements of upper limb joints. The movement analysis from the first experiment suggests that the kinematic data of upper limb can be used to discriminate an expert surgeon from a novice trainee. The results from the second experiment show that the motion of non-dominant hand has a significant effect on the performance of dominant hand.

Recently, conversation agents have attracted the attention of many companies such as IBM, Facebook, Google, and Amazon which have focused on developing tools or API (Application Programming Interfaces) for developers to create their own chat-bots. In this paper, we focus on new approaches to evaluate such systems presenting some recommendations resulted from evaluating a real chatbot use case. Testing conversational agents or chatbots is not a trivial task due to the multitude aspects/tasks (e.g., natural language understanding, dialog management and, response generation) which must be considered separately and as a mixture. Also, the creation of a general testing tool is a challenge since evaluation is very sensitive to the application context. Finally, exhaustive testing can be a tedious task for the project team what creates a need for a tool to perform it automatically. This paper opens a discussion about how conversational systems testing tools are essential to ensure well-functioning of such systems as well as to help interface designers guiding them to develop consistent conversational interfaces.
