Teleoperating industrial manipulators in co-located spaces can be challenging. Facilitating robot teleoperation by providing additional visual information about the environment and the robot affordances using augmented reality (AR), can improve task performance in manipulation and grasping. In this paper, we present two designs of augmented visual cues, that aim to enhance the visual space of the robot operator through hints about the position of the robot gripper in the workspace and in relation to the target. These visual cues aim to improve the distance perception and thus, the task performance. We evaluate both designs against a baseline in an experiment where participants teleoperate a robotic arm to perform pick-and-place tasks. Our results show performance improvements in different levels, reflecting in objective and subjective measures with trade-offs in terms of time, accuracy, and participants' views of teleoperation. These findings show the potential of AR not only in teleoperation, but in understanding the human-robot workspace.

Several organizations have invested in solutions to improve user experience when interacting with computer systems and tools. One of the applied strategies is the study of users behavior in order to identify which areas of interest (AOI) mostly attract their attention in the application interfaces. In this context, this paper proposes an analytical model that defines AOI based on HyperText Markup Language (HTML) objects of the system interface and classifies them based on an algorithm that uses data from the Tracking Techniques Based User Experience Evaluation Tool (T2-UXT). To evaluate the proposal, a feasibility study was carried out on the Amazon portal. Results allow us to visualize a ranking of areas that mostly attract attention from users during the interaction. As such, it can assist organizations in the creation of interacting ways that benefit their interests as well as their customers' interests.

With the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, people had to avoid crowded places and attend hospitals, clinics, and doctors' offices only in an emergency. The authors' institution developed a telehealth platform prototype in a joint effort between Health and Computer Science researchers and students to allow the participation of medical students under the supervision of medical professors to provide emergency health advice using online remote care supported by a video and form-filling tool to support in preliminary diagnosis. This paper presents a usability evaluation of the telehealth platform prototype involving 30 participants in a medium-sized town in the interior of Brazil. Participants simulated virtual consultations about COVID-19 with health professionals. The usability evaluations were fundamental to understanding users' mental models, how to provide a better experience and measuring the system's effectiveness and acceptance. The findings show implications to the design of telehealth systems and the impact of problems related to Information Architecture, user feedback, controlling video-based interfaces. The preliminary results encountered in the present study are essential to help improve the usability of telehealth solutions, which will have a significant growth following the trend from the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the Ubiquitous computing (UbiComp) and Internet of Things (IoT) paradigms, systems have certain specific quality-of-use characteristics that traditional human-Computer Interaction (HCI) evaluation methods may not be able to address, such as context-awareness, invisibility, attentiveness, calmness, mobility and synchronicity, considering that most HCI assessments were generally created to evaluate desktop systems. MALTU model evaluates usability and user experience based on comments left by users on social systems (e.g. Amazom, Mercado Livre, Facebook forums). This work presents an extention in the model to adress these quality characteristics. Before proposing the extension, three evaluations were peformed with the original MALTU. Then, three evaluators performed two evaluations each on the same smart device: the first was the application of the extended MALTU, and the second was a heuristic evaluation using a specific set of heuristics for UbiComp systems. After that, a focus group was held in order to verify if the extended MALTU was capable of identifying typical problems of ubiquitous devices considering its quality characteristics. The results indicate that the extension was able to identify interaction problems in ubiquitous devices, mainly related to usability and user experience, even with difficulties in understanding the concepts of quality characteristics of ubiquitous and IoT systems.

This article addresses the challenge of comprehending digital misinformation as a sociotechnical phenomenon within the field of human-Computer Interaction, particularly in the context of COVID-19-related misinformation in Brazil. The study employed an exploratory approach to analyze misinformation cases using various artifacts and conducted a focus group with eight experts in the field. The findings revealed 137 sociotechnical aspects and 29 stakeholders, shedding light on the complex interplay of factors influencing digital misinformation’s creation, dissemination, and consumption. The study emphasizes the necessity of adopting a sociotechnical approach and highlights the challenges in comprehensively analyzing stakeholders, communication channels, and the stages of the misinformation lifecycle. Overall, the research contributes to a deeper understanding of digital misinformation in sociotechnical contexts and its implications for human-Computer Interaction.

Based on experiences from running the Bangkok ACM SIGHCHI chapter and moderating the UX Thailand Facebook group, this paper offers perspectives on the current situation of human-computer interaction (HCI) education and user experience (UX) practice in Thailand. The status of HCI and UX education is described concerning the lack of HCI-focus curricula offered at the higher education level and other educational efforts from UX professionals. It also briefly discusses local publication venues for HCI research. Regarding the UX practice in Thailand, the paper shortly examines the growing adoption of UX in Thai businesses and the support system sustaining the community of Thai UX practitioners. People who have motor disabilities associated with some difficulty in speech demand alternative means to interact with other people and the environment in which they are inserted. Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) refers to all communication forms that can complement or replace speech. The practice of AAC mediated by computational applications represents a very attractive alternative. For people with motor and speech difficulties, gestural interaction can be a way to make interaction with AAC systems feasible. In this thesis, a methodology called MyPGI (Methodology to yield Personalized Gestural Interaction) was developed and validated to guide the design of AAC systems for people with motor and speech difficulties in order to promote greater autonomy for them in handling computer systems and for monitoring by their caregivers. The methodology uses Computer Vision and Machine Learning techniques to enable non-invasive and personalized gestural interaction using low-cost devices. MyPGI was applied and evaluated in real case studies with people with disabilities, informing the design of an interactive system named PGCA (Personal Gesture Communication Assistant) to allow the creation and use of personalized gestural languages for people with severe motor and speech difficulties. This thesis, defended at the Federal University of Parana's Graduate Program in Informatics, shows conceptual, methodological, and technical contributions, with publications in high-level vehicles, registered software, and social technology available for free and open use.

Technological advancement has enabled the creation of new forms of digital art. Consequently, interactive digital art is becoming increasingly common. Additionally, some artists are concerned with the human aspects of the audience and their experiences, such as the feelings and emotions evoked by their artworks. As a result, there is a strong relationship between this type of art and human-computer interaction (HCI), which aims to understand the use of interactive systems in a specific *** work presents a systematic literature review with the objective of identifying the HCI concepts present in the selected articles from the review. It aims to assist future research that seeks to comprehend how articles on interactive digital art utilize HCI concepts, and also to identify the most recurrent types of interactive digital art. Furthermore, it provides insights for the emergence of future research in relatively unexplored areas.

A major barrier to the commercialization of pattern recognition (PR)-based myoelectric prostheses is the lack of robustness to confounding factors such as electrode shift which has been lingering for years. To overcome this challenge, a novel Duo-Stage Convolutional Neural Network (DS-CNN) is proposed. The DS-CNN is comprised of two cascaded stages in which the first stage deciphers the occurrence of a particular kind of shift upon which a requisite CNN model is triggered in the second stage for accurate decoding of individual motion intent, which is necessary for initiating robust control of the prostheses. The proposed scheme works on raw EMG signals as input which reduces the preprocessing time that would be required in conventional machine learning-based PR schemes, to effectively mitigate both transverse and longitudinal shifts using the same network architecture. This approach was validated for four distinct electrode shift conditions (with shifts in the range of 7.50mm-10.05mm) in a dataset obtained from 18 able-bodied subjects that performed 8 classes of targeted hand gestures. The experimental results show that the proposed dual-stage driven deep neural network model can adequately resolve the effects of electrode shift with classification accuracy near the No-shift scenario ( © 2023 IEEE.
