Investigating the Impact of Healthcare Restructuring on Patient Experience through Data Mining

This paper examines the consequences of healthcare mergers and acquisitions on patient experiences through a comprehensive data mining approach, combining both traditional and innovative methodologies. Utilizing web scraping techniques and machine learning algorithms, we compiled a national dataset, analyzing reviews and ratings from Google and Yelp to gauge patient perspectives pre and post healthcare restructuring. Our analysis included 10 healthcare centers, with a focus on a six-month period before and after mergers or acquisitions took effect. The study identified 35 merger events and 60 acquisition events within the dataset after refining data set, highlighting significant variations in patient experiences post-restructuring. Our two-way ANOVA revealed significant main effects for restructure type (F(1, 661) = 211.77, p < 2e-16) and time period (F(1, 661) = 29.74, p < 6.99e-08), along with a significant interaction between these factors (F(1, 661) = 201.85, p < 2e-16). This significant interaction suggests a differential impact of mergers and acquisitions on patient experience review ratings, dependent on the timing relative to the restructuring event. This decline underscores the nuanced impact of healthcare consolidation on patient care quality and access, particularly among vulnerable populations. Our findings contribute to the ongoing discourse on healthcare restructuring, demonstrating the potential of data mining in uncovering the intricate dynamics of healthcare service delivery and patient satisfaction in the context of organizational changes.

The human-Computer Interaction (HCI) community has reported a lack of well-established evaluation methods based on human values. Neglecting values in computing systems can result in a system that does not make sense to users, that does not serve stakeholders, and that can trigger undesirable impacts, difficult to predict and reverse, in the context in which it is used. This situation is even more critical for widely used systems, such as Online Social Networks (OSN). This paper presents a value-oriented method for the evaluation of OSN. The method is based on Organizational Semiotics and inspired by the heuristic evaluation. The method was evaluated by representatives from its target audience and results were positive about its ease and usefulness of use, showing potential to contribute to discussions and practices on human values in HCI.

Assistive Technology (AT) has facilitated the integration and inclusion of people with disabilities in society. Regarding the visually impaired, the use of AT can be crucial in ensuring access to Information and Communication Technologies. However, in technical and higher-level courses related to computing, the use of AT may not be sufficient to ensure that these students comprehend the concepts addressed in the subjects and have access to all the resources provided by the tools necessary for their professional training. This is because screen readers, the main accessibility resource used by the visually impaired to interact with digital systems, generally perform a linear reading of the content available in the graphical interface, which can demand more time and effort from users. Additionally, this approach may limit access to information. This is particularly relevant in the case of Integrated Development Environment (IDEs), which have complex visual interfaces that may not be accessible to screen readers if accessibility requirements are not correctly implemented. Therefore, this study seeks to identify the barriers to interaction with IDEs faced by students in Computer Programming classes. The research involved surveying 12 professors of disciplines related to the area of Computer Programming who taught students with visual impairment. Additionally, interviews were conducted with 6 students and graduates with visual impairments from Technical and Higher Education courses in the area of computing. The data were analyzed using Content Analysis. The results confirmed those already identified in the literature and also revealed new barriers.

Collaborative annotation reduces the time and cost of the annotation task and increases data quality. For knowledge-intensive contexts, collaborative annotation is an interesting approach to combine expert users’ knowledge with domain data. This work was motivated by a use case where expert users’ tacit knowledge associated with externalized data can produce new domain knowledge. That new knowledge can inform AI-based systems and make them more accurate for that specific domain. To identify and understand the collaborative annotation process’ dimensions, especially when the annotation is used to support AI models, we defined the following research question: “What are the methods, tools, and solutions to allow collaborative annotation?”. We did a systematic literature review, using five specific questions to help us answer the main research question. Our findings allowed us to identify different domains that adopt this approach, tools for collaborative annotation, players present in the process, and strategies for collaborative annotation. We summarize the findings in a taxonomy to represent aspects related to the characterization of annotation, the collaboration itself, and user experience strategies to support this process. We conclude the paper suggesting open opportunities for future research and implications for the design of an AI-based system to support experts in knowledge-intensive processes.

The Internet of Things (IoT) has gained much space in people’s everyday lives in the last few years, and it is already possible to see IoT applications widely used in various domains, such as healthcare and industry. The convergence of IoT and digital games also creates opportunities for HCI & Digital Games research, supposedly opening countless possibilities for innovative games and challenging research. However, research on this topic appears to suffer from a generalized lack of clarity in its basics. Following this thread, we conducted a systematic mapping study and analyzed 22 papers that proposed or evaluated IoT games and gamified systems (IoTGGS), aiming to identify characteristics, patterns, and research opportunities related to HCI design and evaluation. However, our own frustrations in this endeavor also led us to identify shortcomings in commonly-used approaches. Thus, this paper contributes to the debate not only by focusing on the convergence between games and IoT with a systematic approach but also discussing the apparently dead-end we have found when closely analyzing this research topic. We present a brief panorama of the field and the identified gaps and raise possible new directions that could help take IoTGGS research to the next level.

The COVID-19 pandemic triggered a shift in work dynamics in the Philippines, prompting the adoption of flexible work options like remote work and flexible hours to adapt to the new normal. The study presents the implementation of FlexiPH: Flexible Work Arrangement Management System to address the challenges and optimize the benefits of flexible work arrangements. This research investigates on the current state of telecommuting and provides solution on the different issues faced by telecommuters in Zamboanga City, Philippines. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining qualitative interviews and quantitative usability testing to understand the different issues faced by the telecommuters. The findings identified five key themes related to the implementation of telecommuting in the area: Opportunities and Challenges, Productivity Monitoring, Performance Indicators, Employer Support, and the Future of Telecommuting. Additionally, the data analytics and mining features of the application provided valuable insights into employee productivity and the factors impacting performance metrics in telecommuting. FlexiPH effectively addressed the challenges associated with remote work, offering features such as time tracking, productivity monitoring, and performance analysis. Analysis revealed a perfect fit in the regression model, with an R2Score of 1.0. Moreover, the strong positive correlation score of 0.925 between working time and task completion demonstrated the impact of work time to task accomplishment. Lastly, the usability evaluation through the adaptation of Post-Study System Usability Questionnaire confirmed the high usability and user satisfaction of FlexiPH, with average mean scores of 1.25 for the employers and 1.79 for employees, indicating its potential to support efficient and productive flexible work arrangements. Polystore systems are a new trend in Database Management systems, and they focus on storing and processing queries in multiple heterogeneous databases. Polystore systems have complex middleware that provides APIs for multiple types of storage engines. When database administrators use an API, they play the role of an application user and more attention should be paid to analyzing these APIs. This paper investigates the communicability of a Polystore system API (BigDAWG), with the SigniFYIng APIs method, from Semiotic Engineering. We analyze the potential of the method in the characterization of the communicative strategies of the BigDAWG system. The study is preceded by a simplified systematic mapping study in the area of semiotic inspection of APIs to characterize the main contributions. The results of this research indicate the applicability of the SigniFYIng APIs method to support investigations in the context of human-Centered computing and for the study of communicability in Polystore systems.

The design of interactive visualization systems is challenging due to several aspects involving data interpretation and manipulation mechanisms. Designers need adequate support in the conception of these tools for facilitating the interaction of users with data. In this article, we propose a set of design guidelines on human-Data Interaction (HDI) with focus on information visualization (IV). Our recommendations were elaborated based on analysis and summary of knowledge from literature, combined with our own design experience with this kind of systems. This study shows to which extent the organized guidelines were understood, used and discussed by Computer Science students in the construction and evaluation of software prototypes for data-driven decision making. Participants were able to understand the guidelines and applied them with success for evaluation of HDI in IV systems.

The presence of technologies in the agronomic field has the purpose of proposing the best solutions to the challenges found in agriculture, especially to the problems that affect cultivars. One of the obstacles found is to apply the use of your own language in applications that interact with the user in Brazilian Agribusiness, which would bring gains in time, money and accuracy of the analyzes to be performed. This paper proposes the use of Natural Language Processing techniques for the development of an effective system to assist in the identification of pests and diseases in the soybean crop, stored in a database repository to facilitate access to information and diagnosis of the professional.

Conversational systems (CSs) are increasingly being used and receiving investments. However, these systems can present problems that discourage users from using them. This paper aims to verify the opinions of Brazilian users and ex-users of CSs about the use of these systems and their possible difficulties. We conducted an online survey with several questions about the use of CSs and obtained 113 respondents from different knowledge areas, such as law, agronomy, health, computing, among others. Results reveal some issues in the Brazilian context that negatively influence the use of CSs, such as accent, lack of support for the Portuguese language, and internet access problems. Despite this, results show that respondents consider CSs easy to use and satisfactory. We hope our results can contribute to improving these systems for the Brazilian context, providing insights for the exploration of new strategies for designers and developers.
