The Environment-Vulnerability-Decision-Technology (EVDT) integrated modelling framework developed by the Space Enabled Research Group at MIT considers the interactions between the environment, societal impact, human decision-making, and technology design to support decision-making. Local leaders in coastal communities in Pekalongan, Indonesia and the Yurok tribal community in California face societal challenges and related decisions regarding the planting of mangroves to improve coastal resilience versus other man-made techniques to mitigate flooding, and the monitoring and protection of indigenous natural resources. The EVDT framework is being applied to develop accessible, web-based Decision Support systems (DSS) utilizing integrated modelling and Earth Observation (EO) satellite data to support decision-makers seeking to address complex societal challenges at the intersection of environmental factors, socioeconomic factors, and technology investments. DSS provide a value-added product to aid leaders in addressing decisions by helping them understand complex relationships between these factors, adapt to changes within the community, and address the needs of multiple stakeholders. The EVDT framework is being utilized to develop DSS that output descriptive and predictive models for decision-makers. These models will allow decision-makers to examine historical data from environmental and socioeconomic domains and explore their relationships under varying simulated conditions to evaluate policies or technological investments. These DSS make extensive use of EO observation data as inputs to environmental and socioeconomic analyses that employ cloud computing and will use machine learning algorithms to classify features of interest in the satellite data. Issue tracking systems play an important role in developing software systems. They provide a central place to store and maintain different development artifacts. Various studies are concerned with the contained bug reports, features, the relations among them and traces to the projects code base. However, an issue tracker can also be used as a communication channel between project contributors by attaching comments to issues. Less is known on how users actually utilize this functionality. In this paper, we study more than 270,000 comments from twelve open-source projects. We analyze to what extend comments are used and then study the structure occurring in threads of comments. Based on the order of comments and participating contributors, we identified three patterns of conversation: monolog, feedback, and collaboration. Our results show that most conversations are collaborations among two or more developers discussing the issue.

This article presents the results of a first analysis of the construction process of an assistive augmented reality technology to support the spontaneous visit of deaf and hard of hearing to museums, in order to identify all barriers and benefits that may assist the developers in the design of artifacts for deaf pre-linguistic people. For this purpose, it was built an application prototype, based on user-centered design, able to present the museum's exhibition content in different formats.

The number of elderly people in the world has been growing every year as well as their interest in using computer and internet. Crowdsourcing systems can benefit from the participation of these elderly people, however, little is known about the use of these systems by this public. The aim of our research is to propose a motivation model to support understanding crowdsourcing usage by elderly people. In this article, we present preliminary results of an exploratory study performed with interviews and observations with 6 old-aged people performing micro-tasks crowdsourcing known as human Intelligence Task (HIT). The results indicate the potential of crowdsourcing to become a fun activity and pastime for elderly, as well as supporting the increase of self-esteem, and social engagement.

Context: Empirical evaluations have been widely applied as a formalism to validate and ensure the credibility of research works. In the context of human-Computer Interaction (HCI) field, the usage of empirical methods plays a vital role due to its focus on evaluating the end-user and usability of software solutions. Even though the adoption of experimental evaluation techniques has gained popularity in recent years, its application is still questioned both qualitatively and quantitatively. Goal: To analyze how empirical research has evolved in the human-Computer Interaction Brazilian community. Method: We performed a quasi-experiment, using published papers over the 17 editions in Brazilian symposium on human factors in computing systems. Our experiment was divided into two phases, in order to evaluate the quality assessment and classify the type of realized empirical study, respectively. Results: From the sample of 231 studies, 113 reached satisfactory quality in the first phase. It was found that empirical studies were becoming more present in lastly years of the conference. Moreover, in the second phase, it was found with 95% confidence that the quality of the empirical studies increased, by comparing two different divisions of the 20-year conference period. Findings: The assessment questionnaire used in our research and the learned lessons about each kind of empirical study can support the conduction of new empirical evaluations in the HCI community, improving their quality.

The environments constructed from contemporary technology (interactive, tangible and ubiquitous) are still challenging the mainstream HCI methods for designing interactive systems, demanding new ways of considering the interaction design and its evaluation. In this work, we investigate the concepts of enactive system and (socio)enactive experience by proposing the design of a learning environment. We designed and constructed TangiTime, an educational exhibit to explore the concept of 'deep time' in a (socio)enactive experience of interaction. We discuss the design process, the artifacts implementation, and results of an exploratory study to observe and understand how (socio)enactive aspects of experience potentially emerge into the educational exhibit.

Usability is an attribute of quality in use that should be considered not only in evaluation but also in systems design. There are several ways to integrate usability into design, the USINN model (USability-oriented INteraction and Navigation) integrates usability during interaction and navigation modeling of an interactive system. However, previous studies indicate that USINN needs support to direct designers to represent the usability mechanisms relevant to a system using the elements of its notation. This paper presents the initial proposal for a support approach denominated USINN Cards, a set of cards to direct the usability modeling in USINN diagrams. The cards were evaluated in an academic environment by three designers with little experience with USINN and usability. The results were positive, indicated that USINN cards are easy to use and suportted usability modeling.

This work is the initial step of a broader research and its main objective is to evaluate the possibility to discover usability requirements from information in the Functional Resonance Analysis Method (FRAM) models. It is expected to detect the possibility of extracting from these models some requirements that are better suited to the adaptation needs of users in complex systems. From the combination of two methods (FRAM and MacKnight) we evaluated, through experiments, the possibility of identifying usability aspects for technological devices that deal with variability, unpredictability and adaptation in systems. This paper presents the results obtained from the experiments carried out in the health field, a complex system, and gives directions to future works.

Social media, wearable devices and other advanced forms of interaction are enabling digital immortality as a post-mortem possibility where people can manage their digital legacy and recreate digital lives as well. In this paper, we study how users perceive digital immortality. In this discuss the results from our research using a focus group to shed light on the topic in a value-oriented perspective. During analysis of the focus group transcription, we reflected on key human values that our participants manifested during discussion, and how important they are in the design of digital immortality features that understand and respect humans needs, from the very beginning of systems usage to the legacy of data, concerning the emotional moment that death provides. This qualitative and quantitative research analyzes these data and proposes important insights in this area.

In the development process, software models support communication among members of the development team. Communication failures caused by software models may generate inconsistencies in the system, impairing its quality. Aiming to reduce risks of communication failures through software models, researchers can use the Directives of Communicability (DCs). The DCs were created based on Semiotic Engineering Theory and Grice's Cooperative Principle to improve the quality of communication among software development team members through software models. The aim of this paper is to present an empirical study assessing the use of DCs in the production of three software models. The results indicated that the DCs achieved the intended potential to reduce communication failures of what software models meant to those who produced them. The DCs also contributed to the quality of artifacts produced by their consumers, given that communication failures through software models can cause inconsistencies.
