We present human figure control software using vision-based human motion capturing. We have already developed core techniques for vision-based human motion tracking and motion synthesis. We have provided the first version software as an open source kit. In this work, we have developed the second version software with modified motion synthesis. Our software consists of the following software: the vision software (includes 2D blob tracking modules and stereo vision module) and the motion synthesis software (includes skeletal structure reconstruction from a limit number of 3D positions, i.e., physically simulated joint position estimator). This software can be employed for many real-virtual applications such as avatar based video conferencing, virtual human control, and 3D game consoles which need the user postures as input. Our software requires the following hardware: more than two firewire cameras for vision processing and more than one PC for vision processing, motion synthesis, and rendering. In our real-virtual system, this software is also employed for virtual object manipulation interface with augmented avatar representation.

The design process of computer speech systems is presented. Going over the solutions of neural networks, the systolic structure gives the biggest possibility for smart realization of a speech processor. A speech processing system, built generally as software surroundings, occupies an immense memory space. For real-time application it is necessary to combine the existing algorithms. Further increasing of the speed can be also achieved by using hardware-software co-design. The approach presented in this paper, permits to design such effective systems of human voice synthesis and speech identification. Since the spoken language can be very often ambiguous, then it was useful to include a fuzzy logic approach and also artificial neural networks, to obtain more effective methods of speech processing. Mixed analog-digital realizations are also discussed. Practical realizations of the current mode building blocks ensure the cheapest realization of CMOS integrated circuits.

Scaling of semiconductor devices has enabled higher levels of integration and performance improvements at the price of making devices more susceptible to the effects of static and dynamic variability. Adding safety margins (guardbands) on the operating frequency or supply voltage prevents timing errors, but has a negative impact on performance and energy consumption. We propose Edge-TM, an adaptive hardware/software error management policy that (i) optimistically scales the voltage beyond the edge of safe operation for better energy savings and (ii) works in combination with a hardware Transactional Memory (HTM)-based error recovery mechanism. The policy applies dynamic voltage scaling (DVS) (while keeping frequency fixed) based on the feedback provided by HTM, which makes it simple and generally applicable. Experiments on an embedded platform show our technique capable of 57% energy improvement compared to using voltage guardbands and an extra 21-24% improvement over existing state-of-the-art error tolerance solutions, at a nominal area and time overhead. © 2017 ACM.

The most expensive component in the process of building a custom computing machine is the time consuming and highly qualified work of hardware designers. This hinders the wide proliferation of CCMs and pushes this innovative technology into a niche market of research applications. A potential solution to the problem is behavioural or high level synthesis (HLS) which promises the compilation of algorithms into hardware. The experiment reported in this paper was aimed at the evaluation of general purpose HLS tools in building CCMs. We focused on identifying areas where the synthesis methods and tools should be improved in order to cope with CCM's specific design problems. The design case, a specialised computer for the simulation of the sintering process, has been carefully chosen to exhibit the problems that are likely to be encountered in advanced designs for CCMs. Our experiment shows that the HLS tools, when supplied with an appropriate input description, are capable of producing a design not too different from RTL level manual design. HLS needs to be improved, especially regarding loop unwinding, pipelining, and the synthesis of suitable memory configurations. However, many of the required techniques are already available from the field of parallel compilation. The conclusion is that improved HLS tools will bring the performance of compiled CCMs very close to that of manual designs. This can put the high performance of CCM technology at the fingertips of computer programmers without extensive hardware expertise.

Abstract: A key aspect of the synthesis of embedded systems is the automatic integration of system components. This entails the derivation of both the hardware and software interfaces that will bind these elements together and permit them to communicate correctly and efficiently. Without the automatic synthesis of these interfaces, designers are not able to fully simulate and evaluate their systems. Frequently, they are discouraged from exploring the design space of different hardware/software partitions because practical concerns mandate minimizing changes late in the design cycle, thus leading to more costly implementations than necessary. This paper presents a set of techniques that form the basis of a comprehensive solution to the synthesis of hardware/software interfaces. software drivers and glue logic are generated to connect processors to peripheral devices, hardware co-processors, or communication interfaces while meeting bandwidth and performance requirements. We use as examples a set of devices that communicate over an infrared local communications network (highlighting a video wrist-watch display) to explain our techniques and the need for design space exploration tools for embedded systems.

Electronic systems need to accommodate rapidly changing product specifications and to reduce design costs together with design turn-around time. To be able to reuse part of previous designs and to be able to include new functionality rapidly, system designers tend to use microcontrollers and digital signal processors (DSPs) as much as possible. For performance reasons they may be forced to design special purpose hardware, but even then there is a strong motivation toward the reuse of parts already designed. This trend will change the industrial landscape and will make the trade and assembly of intellectual properties (IPs) embodied in layouts, RTL designs, and software programs indispensable. We believe that system design should be based on the use of one or more formal models to describe the behavior of the system at a high level of abstraction, before a decision on its decomposition into hardware and software components is taken. Design should then be based on a sequence consisting of the initial functional design (i.e. specifying what the system is intended to do) and its analysis, the mapping of such functional description, into an architecture, and the consequent performance evaluation. The final implementation of the system should be made using automatic synthesis as much as possible from this high level of abstraction, to ensure implementations that are "correct by construction". Validation (through simulation or verification) should be done at the highest possible levels of abstraction.

Modern high-performance embedded systems face many challenges. systems must function in rapidly changing environments. Power/size constraints limit hardware size, while extreme performance requirements demand algorithm specific architectures. hardware architectures must structurally adapt to achieve high performance with changing algorithms. Reconfigurable computing devices offer the promise of architectures that change in response to the changing environment. The primary difficulty in this approach lies in system design. A model-integrated approach is used in the design capture and synthesis of these systems. The target systems are built on a heterogeneous computing platform including configurable hardware, ASIC and general purpose processors and DSPs. This project is a DARPA Adaptive Computing systems funded effort, involving close cooperation with US ARMY/AMICOM.
