A softwaresystem to interface standard personal computer applications to speech synthesishardware is presented. It has been designed for use with applications utilizing MS-DOS on IBM PCs and compatible computers. A variety of phoneme-driven speech synthesizers may be supported. The system is composed of three main software elements: (1) an interface to the input and output of the standard application by the operating system;(2) a user interface providing control of the system;(3) translation of text to speech. hardware consists of the host computer system and a simple speech synthesizer. The speech system is adaptable to various speech synthesizer hardware. Adapting the speech system to another synthesizer requires two changes;to the IPA (international Phonetic Association)-to-synthesizer translation rule file to reflect that specific synthesizer's phoneme-code representation, and to the software that drives the synthesizer hardware to reflect the manner in which the hardware interfaces to the computer system.

The authors present the hardware and software design of an experimental system allowing the inclusion of speech capabilities at the man/machine interface level. The hardware is based on a personal computer in combination with a multiprocessor system. The latter consists of a microprocessor for management purposes and several signal processing boards for the implementation of speech algorithms. An audio board provides the interface to the acoustical environment. The software consists of a high-level supervisor function, a medium-level hardware manager, and low-level functions for communication between the different DSPs (digital signal processors) and the system. Speech modules (speech recognition, speech coding, speaker verification, and text-to-speech synthesis) are also implemented.

A universal multiprocessor system has been developed for a variety of real-time speech processing applications, including isolated-word and connected-word recognition and medium-bit-rate speech analysis/synthesis. The throughput capability of the system for speech recognition is about 1000 actual word templates in real time. The main advantage of the system is that the same hardware can be used in different areas of man-machine communication;only different software modules have to be downloaded, depending on the application. Therefore, this system can serve as a basic component in future telecommunication services, where voice input/output is required for dialogue control.

The ENDECO ADAPTIVE Packet Telemetry system is a hardware and software package for gathering data from up to 99 sites. Each site accommodates eight sensors (and remote control devices). The base station is an IBM-PC which provides real-time data monitoring, printing, and archiving, and which controls all site functions. Inside the IBM-PC is an ENDECO interface card that links the IBM-PC with a radio and a telephone line. The radio is used to start samples and gather data from each site. The telephone is used to call help automatically if an alert arises (e. g. , water level too high). The user can also request data or remotely control functions by phone or hand radio. Data are expressed orally using high-fidelity voice synthesis. All sites can also relay radio packets to increase communications range. Packets are rerouted automatically if any site fails.
