For distributed real-time systems, adequate profiling tools are exceedingly rare. The sheer variety and low-level nature of these systems impede the adoption of standard, general-purpose tools for performance analysis and visualization. Although much research has been devoted to profiling parallel clusters and supercomputers, the literature virtually ignores the real-time domain. Correspondingly, a handful of commercial tools is available for profiling realtime software, but they invariably make a single-node assumption and are unable to cope with distributed environments. We examine the state of performance analysis and discuss why profilers are conspicuously absent in the field of distributed real-time systems. We then explore how developers of these systems could benefit from graphical profiling tools with automatic instrumentation and data collection. Toward that end, we demonstrate the prototype of a performance visualization tool called "Bacara," the second addition to our suite of tools for Visual Analysis of distributed Real-time systems, or VADR (va'dar).

In this paper, we present and compare two methods for designing and profiling macro data flow graphs, which represent computation and communication patterns for the FDTD (Finite Difference Time Domain) problem in irregular computational areas. With the first method, optimized macro data flow graphs (MDFG) for FDTD computations are generated in three main phases: generation of initial MDFG based on wave propagation area partitioning, MDFG nodes merging with load balancing to obtain given number of macro nodes and communication optimization to minimize and balance internode data transmissions. With the second method, we use a modified CDC (Connectivity-based distributed Node Clustering) algorithm to create an optimized macro data flow graph. The efficiency and execution time for both of these methods are compared. Computation efficiency for different several communication systems (MPI, RDMA RB, SHMEM) is discussed. All presented experimental results have been obtained by simulation.

The distributed product data management (DPDM) is the key effectively of the remote collaborative designing and manufacturing for complex product. A study project on DPDM and consistency control techniques based on collaborative service platform (CSP) in aero subcontract production (Aero-SP) is put forwarded. First, in order to settle the problem of data exchange and share, collaborative work/flow management among multiple PDM systems are critical processes for geographically distributed design and manufacturing systems. A distributed and open integrated product data management framework was developed based on a collaborative service platform by analyzing the technical performance of distributed product data management. The data communication method and safety assurance mechanism are also discussed A simple portal is provided web-based accessing for collaborative manufacturing enterprise, and actualized expediently the data exchange, share, querying and process collaborative management. second, in order to settle the problem of product data consistency in remote environment among dynamic alliance enterprises in Aero-SP, the distributed store strategy of product data based on original and duplicate data cooperation technique is designed and the coordinate process structure based on multi-server cooperation is setup according to the creating position and using attribute of product data. Further more, the initiative and automatic check between the central and secondary product databases among dynamic alliance enterprises is implemented by top-down product data consistency checking technique. All key enabling techniques were practiced in Aero-SP of aviation project and the consistency controlling approach was verified.

This paper presents TPCC-UVa, an open-source implementation of the TPC-C benchmark intended to be used in parallel and distributed systems. TPCC-UVa is written entirely in C language and it uses the Post-greSQL database engine. This implementation includes all the functionalities described by the TPC-C standard specification for the measurement of both uni- and multiprocessor systems performance. The major characteristics of the TPC-C specification are discussed, together with a description of the TPCC-UVa implementation and architecture and real examples of performance measurements

Divisible load theory (DLT) considers the scheduling of arbitrarily partitionable loads in distributed systems. The underlying assumption of DLT is that the processors are obedient (i.e., they do not "cheat" the protocol), which is unrealistic when the processors are owned by autonomous, self-interested organizations that have no a priori motivation for cooperation and which strive to maximize their own welfare. In this scenario, they will manipulate the algorithm if it is beneficial to do so. In this paper, we propose a strategy proof mechanism for scheduling divisible loads in bus networks without control processors. We augment DLT with incentives so that it is to the benefit of a processor to truthfully report its processing capacity and to process its assignment at full capacity. The mechanism provides incentives to processors for reporting deviants and issues fines to deviants, which results in abated willingness to deviate

The BLAST algorithm is the prevalent tool that is used by molecular biologists for DNA sequence matching and database search. In this work we demonstrate that with an appropriate reconfigurable architecture, BLAST performance can be improved with a single-chip solution 5 times over a specialized and optimized computer cluster, or 37 times over a single computer. Many distributed systems may be limited in their performance by the number of transactions they are able to support per unit of time. In order to achieve fault tolerance and to boost a system's performance, active state machine replication is frequently used. It employs total ordering service to keep the state of replicas synchronized. In this paper, we present an architecture that enables a drastic increase in the number of ordered transactions in a cluster, using off-the-shelf network equipment. Performance supporting nearly one million ordered transactions per second has been achieved, which substantiates our claim

Sampling is a widely used technique to increase efficiency in database and data mining applications operating on large dataset. In this paper, we present a scalable sampling implementation that supports efficient, multi-dimensional spatio-temporal sample generation on dynamic, large scale datasets stored on a storage cluster The proposed algorithm leverages Hilbert space-filling curves in order to provide an approximate linear order of multidimensional data while maintaining spatial locality. This new implementation is then bootstrapped on top of our previous implementation, which efficiently samples large datasets along a single dimension (e.g., time), thereby realizing a service for spatio-temporal sampling. We evaluate the performance of our approach comparing it to the popular R-tree based technique. The experimental results show that our approach achieves up to an order of magnitude higher efficiency and scalability

In this paper, we present a tree-partition algorithm for parallel mining of frequent patterns. Our work is based on FP-Growth algorithm, which is constituted of tree-building stage and mining stage. The main idea is to build only one FP-Tree in the memory, partition it into several independent parts and distribute them to different threads. A heuristic algorithm is devised to balance the workload. Our algorithm can not only alleviate the impact of locks during the tree-building stage, but also avoid the overhead that do great harm to the mining stage. We present the experiments on different kinds of datasets and compare the results with other parallel approaches. The results suggest that our approach has great advantage in efficiency, especially on certain kinds of datasets. As the number of processors increases, our parallel algorithm shows good scalability.

In designing the management system for Blue Gene/L, we adopted a database-centric approach. All configuration and operational data for a particular Blue Gene/L system are stored in a relational database that is kept in the system's service node. The database also serves as the communication bus for the various processes implementing the management system. This design offers many advantages, including the ability to use SQL commands to retrieve reliability, availability, and serviceability (RAS) information about the system. Information about machine partitioning and user jobs can be obtained the same way. Leveraging the database, we have developed a Web interface for system management. This management system has been successfully implemented and deployed in all 19 Blue Gene/L installations at the time of this writing
