There are at least two major security challenges in mobile code distributed systems. First hosts have to be protected from potentially malicious actions of mobile code they are executing. Many techniques are known which address this problem. second mobile agents themselves have to be protected against malicious hosts. Satisfactory ways to deal with the second problem are necessary features for many of the (security-sensitive) tasks mobile agent (MA) systems are envisioned for, e.g., in e-commerce applications where a shopping agent is sent out on the Internet, vendors have a high incentive in tampering with these agents. The key point is is that the originator of the agent needs to have sound guarantees that the results an agent brings back are correct. Why else should he send out the agent in the first place?.

In this paper we present the design, implementation and evaluation of a runtime system based on collective I/O techniques for irregular applications. We present two models, namely, "Collective I/O" and "Pipelined Collective I/O". In the first scheme, all processors participate in the I/O simultaneously making scheduling of I/O requests simpler but creating a possibility of contention at the I/O nodes. In the second approach, processors are grouped into several groups, so that only one group performs I/O simultaneously, while the next group performs communication to rearrange data, and this entire process is pipelined to reduce I/O node contention dynamically. Both models have been optimized by using software caching, chunking and on-line compression mechanisms. We demonstrate that we can obtain significantly high-performance for I/O above what has been possible so far. The performance results are presented on an Intel Paragon and on the ASCI/Red teraflops machine at Sandia National Labs.

The distributed Array Query and Visualization (DAQV) project aims to develop systems and tools that facilitate interacting with distributed programs and data structures. Arrays distributed across the processes of a parallel or distributed application are made available to external clients via well defined interfaces and protocols. Our design considers the broad issues of language targets, models of interaction, and abstractions for data access, while our implementation attempts to provide a general framework that can be adapted to a range of application scenarios. The paper describes the second generation of DAQV work and places it in the context of the more general distributed array access problem. Current applications and future work are also described.

PC clusters have been studied intensively for next-generation large scale parallel computers. ATM technology is a strong candidate as a de facto standard of high speed communication networks. Therefore an ATM connected PC cluster is a very promising platform from the cost/performance point of view, as a future high performance computing environment. An ATM connected PC cluster consisting of 100 PCs is reported, and characteristics of a transport layer protocol for the PC cluster are evaluated. Point-to-point communication performance is measured and discussed when a TCP window size parameter is changed. Retransmission caused by cell loss at the ATM switch is analyzed, and parameters of the retransmission mechanism suitable for parallel processing on the large scale PC cluster are clarified. From the viewpoint of applications, data intensive applications such as data mining and ad-hoc query processing in databases are considered to be very important for massively parallel processors, in addition to conventional scientific calculations. Thus, investigating the feasibility of such applications on an ATM connected PC cluster is quite meaningful. parallel data mining is implemented and evaluated on the cluster. The default TCP protocol cannot provide good performance, since a lot of collisions happen during all-to-all multicasting executed on the large scale PC cluster. Using TCP parameters according to the proposed optimization, sufficient performance improvement is achieved for parallel data mining on 100 PCs.

TSQL2 is a query language designed for temporal databases. In TSQL2, the GROUP BY clause has a temporal grouping property. In temporal grouping, the time line of each attribute value is partitioned into several sections, and aggregate functions are computed for each time partition. This paper describes two parallel algorithms, data partition and group partition, which compute temporal aggregates over a network of workstations. In the group partition scheme, each workstation maintains the entire aggregate tree for some attribute values selected by the GROUP BY clause. Thus, some workstations may be overloaded while others are idle for most of the time. In the data partition scheme, all the workstations participate in constructing the aggregate trees in the first phase of the scheme. Thus the load is evenly distributed across the workstations in the system in the first phase of the scheme. However, before the second phase starts, workstations must exchange the aggregate trees generated at the first phase. A simulator has been used to test the performance of the two algorithms. The results show that the performance of algorithm group partition is slightly better than data partition.

A parallel distributed scheme is presented for coding random patterns generated via iteration of contraction mappings. The scheme is implemented by a decentralized computational process an distributed parameter system. The distributed parameter system generates a representation of missing probability for attractor as the basis of design of contraction mappings. The local minimals of missing probability is extracted and aggregated as the decentralized representation of contraction mappings. The coding scheme is verified through computer simulation.

Heterogeneity is becoming quite common in distributed parallel computing systems, both in processor architectures and in communication networks. Different types of networks have different performance characteristics, while different types of messages may have different communication requirements. In this work, we analyze two techniques for exploiting these heterogeneous characteristics and requirements to reduce the communication overhead of parallel application programs executed an distributed computing systems. The performance based path selection (PBPS) technique selects the best (lowest latency) network among several for each individual message, while the second technique aggregates multiple networks into a single virtual network. We present a general approach for applying and evaluating these techniques to a distributed computing system with multiple interprocessor communication networks, We also generate performance curves for a cluster of IBM workstations interconnected with Ethernet, ATM, and Fibre Channel networks. As we show with several of the NAS benchmarks, these curves can be used to estimate the potential improvement in communication performance that can be obtained with these: techniques, given some simple communication characteristics of an application program.

High complexity of building parallel applications is often cited as one of the major impediments to the mainstream adoption of parallel computing, To deal with the complexity of software development, abstractions such as macros, functions, abstract data types, and objects are commonly employed by sequential as well as parallel programming models. This paper describes the concept of a design pattern for the development of parallel applications. A design pattern in our case describes a recurring parallel programming problem and a reusable solution to that problem. A design pattern is implemented as a reusable code skeleton for quick and reliable development of parallel applications. A parallel programming system, called DPnDP (Design Patterns and distributed Processes), that employs such design patterns is described. In the past, parallel programming systems have allowed fast prototyping of parallel applications based on commonly occurring communication and synchronization structures. The uniqueness of our approach a's in the use of a standard structure and interface for a design pattern. This has several important Implications: First, design patterns can be defined and added to the system's library in an incremental manner without requiring any major modification of the system (Extensibility). second, customization of a parallel application is possible by mixing design patterns with low level parallel code resulting in a flexible and efficient parallel programming toot (Flexibility). Also, a parallel design pattern can be parameterized to provide some variations in terms of structure and behavior.

The problem of global synchronization in massively parallel systems is discussed for the level of models represented by asynchronous cellular automata arrays. Synchronization is called global if a given asynchronous automata array functions in logical time so that its behavior can be homomorphously mapped to the behavior of the prototype synchronous system in physical time. Our approach is decomposing the asynchronous array to synchro-stratum which acts as a distributed asynchronous clock and automata stratum whose automata have a construction similar to that of the synchronous prototype array automata. For various disciplines of prototype synchronization, the corresponding variants of synchro-stratum implementation for the asynchronous analogue are discussed.

Applications that use high-speed networks to connect geographically distributed supercomputers, databases, and scientific instruments may operate over open networks and access valuable resources. Hence, they can require mechanisms for ensuring integrity and confidentiality of communications and for authenticating both users and resources. Security solutions developed for traditional client-server applications do not provide direct support for the program structures, programming tools, and performance requirements encountered in these applications. We address these requirements via a security-enhanced version of the Nexus communication library, which we use to provide secure versions of parallel libraries and languages, including the Message Passing Interface. These tools permit a fine degree of control over what, where, and when security mechanisms are applied. In particular, a single application can mix secure and nonsecure communication, allowing the programmer to make fine-grained security/performance tradeoffs. We present performance results that quantify the performance of our infrastructure.
