In this paper, we design and implement a prototypical heterogeneous distributed database system, named DIME (distributed Information Management). DIME has the following salient properties. First, DIME allows both global retrieval operations and global update operations where different concurrency control schemes are used in different local database systems (LDBSs). second, DIME implements international standard protocols on the distributed transaction processing and the remote database access. Last, DIME provides distribution transparency, and thus users can generate not only single site queries (including remote site queries) but also inter-site queries without considering data distribution in LDBSs.< >

Performance prediction should be included in the compilation process, by second-generation supercompilers, for creating an information feedback to improve parallel programs. However, application programs might consist of a number of procedures calling one another and creating a complex call structure. Every procedure consists of several parallel processes with more or less intensive interprocess communications. This parallel system represents a very time consuming workload for the performance analysis tool. We have designed a hierarchical strategy for analysis of the program call structure, which significantly reduces the total time necessary for the performance prediction of the whole parallel program.

The paper studies the characteristics of synchronous ordering of messages. Synchronous ordering of messages defines synchronous communication based on the causality rather than time. We present the sufficient conditions, based on the causality relations, for any algorithm to provide synchronous ordering. We also propose an algorithm using acknowledgment messages to implement the sufficient conditions. The algorithm is deadlock-free, and provides a higher degree of concurrency than existing algorithms.< >

PVM, a message-passing software system for parallel processing, is used on a wide variety of processor platforms, but this portability restricts execution speed. The work here will address this problem mainly in the context of Ethernet-based systems, proposing two PVM enhancements for such systems. The first enhancement exploits the fact that an Ethernet has broadcast capability. Since unenhanced PVM must, to keep portability, avoid using broadcast, execution speed is sacrificed. In addition, the larger the system, the larger the sacrifice in speed. A solution to this problem is presented. The second enhancement is intended for use in applications in which many concurrent tasks finish at the same time, and thus simultaneously try to transmit to a master process. On an Ethernet, this produces excessively long random backoffs, reducing program speed. An enhancement, termed "programmed backoff," is proposed.

Quality is a strategic activity that requires the emergence of numerous methods to implement quality concepts, leading to conditions that can be met only with the use of information technology to collect, process and exchange quality data within industrial organizations. Therefore there is a need for a computerized integrated quality assurance system (IQAS). Being a computerized system, IQAS is discrete. Considering a possible architecture of IQAS, the system is described relative to its component data and the acquisition, storage, processing and presentation mode. Data may be on-line or off-line acquired. It is organized according to the processing mode in a two levels distributed system, the first level with a main relational database and several local databases and the second one with real-time distributed databases, storing on-line acquired process data. The temporal and spatial consistency and the deadlocks detecting mode are underlined. Data are transmitted using NOVELL network for the first level of IQAS and MMS protocol and fieldbus networks for the second level. One aspect of data processing is the statistical process control. A set of procedures related to control charts and special functions was developed using UISL library. IQAS is now being tested with real data in some Romanian companies.

Our discussion assumes parallel or distributed computer systems that allow dynamic migration of processes between processors. Because the overall performance of these systems is strongly dependent on the overheads of migration, it is vital that migration be implemented as efficiently as possible. However, efficient implementations are often complex implementations and thus we have a conflict between performance and correctness. We cannot make the conflict go away, but we should be able to find ways of describing migration designs such that it is easy for system developers to make changes (for performance reasons) and see straight away what the implications for correctness are. We suggest that the formal specification language Z provides just such a way of describing migration designs. To support this suggestion we present an extended example based on the specification of a migration-proof communication protocol. This example is particularly appropriate because the possibility that a communicating process may migrate several times between communications greatly complicates the implementation. Yet we still require that communication should be efficient and correct, i.e. that messages should not be lost or duplicated. We make three contributions. First, we suggest a two-level plan for specification which separates issues of what operations do from when they do it. second, we outline a rigorous proof style which combines formal statements of assumptions and proof steps with informal reasoning. Third, we show that we can link performance measurements with the specification but that we need to do this via finite state machines.< >

An SPMD parallel implementation schema for divide-and-conquer specifications is proposed and derived by formal refinement (transformation) of the specification. The specification is in the form of a mutually recursive functional definition. In first phase, a parallel functional program schema is constructed which consists of a communication tree and a functional program that is shared by all nodes of the tree. The fact that this phase proceeds by semantics-preserving transformations in the Bird-Meertens formalism of higher-order functions guarantees the correctness of the resulting functional implementation. A second phase yields an imperative distributed SPMD implementation of this schema. The derivation process is illustrated with an example: a two-dimensional numerical integration algorithm.

Segmentation and other image processing operations rely on convolution calculations with heavy computational and memory access demands. This paper presents an analysis of a texture segmentation application containing a 96x96 convolution. Sequential execution required several hours on single processors systems with over 99% of the time spent performing the large convolution. 70% to 75% of execution time is attributable to cache misses within the convolution. We implemented the same application on CM-5, iPSC/860 and PVM distributed memory multicomputers, tailoring the parallel algorithms to each machine's architectures. parallelization significantly reduced execution time, taking 49 second on a 512 node CM-5 and 6.5 minutes on a 32 node iPSC/860.

In our earlier papers, the parallelization and implementations of Gauss-Seidel(G-S) power flow analysis have been investigated on both shared memory (SM) and distributed memory (DM) machines. The desired properties to maximize the speedup, such as the minimum communication overhead and the balancing computational load, have been described. In this paper, we investigate a two stage parallelization scheme to achieve the desired properties for the DM type machines. In the first stage, we introduce a new efficient heuristic clustering algorithm which reduces the communication time and balances the computational load. In the second stage, we devise a coloring algorithm which intends to minimize the synchronization overhead and coordinates the information exchange among processors. It is shown that the parallelization scheme effectively increases the speedups and the associated upper bound of G-S algorithm on the nCUBE2 machine.

We consider the problem of broadcasting multiple messages from one processor to many processors in telephone-like communication systems. In such systems, processors communicate in rounds, where in every round, each processor can communicate with exactly one other processor by exchanging messages with it. Finding an optimal solution for this problem was open for over a decade. In this paper, we present an optimal algorithm for this problem when the number of processors is even. For an odd number of processors, we provide an algorithm which is within an additive term of 1 of the optimum. A by-product of our solution is an algorithm for the problem of broadcasting multiple messages for any number of processors in the simultaneous send/receive model. In this latter model, in every round, each processor can send a message to one processor and receive a message from another processor.< >
