The paper proposes a scheme, dependency propagation algorithm (DPA), to analyze the parallelism of production systems, which have certain conflict resolution strategies. The scheme, based on a marked high-level Petri net, is to find out which rules can be executed in parallel without changing the semantics of OPS5-like production systems. This DPA uses explicit dependency, implicit dependency with degree 1 and dependency propagation to construct dependency matrix and parallel executable matrix. The high probability partitioning algorithm considering both load balance and maximal parallel execution uses a parallel executable matrix to map production rules into a multiprocessing system. The parallel execution model exploits not only parallel matching but also parallel firing. The initial results reveal that the performance of production systems is greatly improved.< >

In main memory systems recovery becomes more complex mainly due to the volatility of main memory and the elimination of the separation of data storage (disk) and data processing locations (main memory). In a disk based database system, it is the disk copy that represents the stable database restored after a system failure; but in MDBSs, the main memory copy of the database must be recovered. The paper discusses the recovery issues in MDBSs and presents a somewhat detailed performance study of two recovery algorithms, one using a shadow approach and the other update-in-place.< >

The authors describe a new concurrent B-tree algorithm. The algorithm is designed to work well in large-scale parallel or distributed systems in which the number of processors sharing the tree is large or the communication delay between processors (or between processors and the global memory for a shared-memory system) is large relative to the speed of local computation. The basis of the algorithm is an abstraction that is similar to coherent shared memory, but provides a weaker semantics; this abstraction is called multiversion memory. Multi-version memory uses caches but weakens the semantics of ordinary shared memory by allowing process reading data to be given an old version of the data. This semantics is adequate for the non-leaf nodes in the B-tree algorithms presented.< >

In object oriented databases (OODB) all interactions among objects are via messages. A message can be viewed as a command to activate a specific method within the object to which the message is sent. The paper motivates and proposes an OODB transaction definition based on message passing. It first describes several previous OODB transaction definitions and identifies requirements for a transaction definition based on message passing. Then it provides an introduction to transaction trees, a view of an OODB transaction. A more formal definition of a transaction tree is then given, followed by an indication of areas for future research.< >

They show the difference between joining flat relations and joining nested relations, and then develop hash-based parallel join algorithms. Both IO and CPU parallelism are addressed. A novel optimistic concurrency control (OCC) protocol for distributed high-performance transaction systems is presented. Unlike other proposals for OCC in distributed systems, this scheme limits the number of restarts by acquiring locks to guarantee a failed transaction a successful second execution. Lock acquisition and validation are imbedded in the commit protocol in order to avoid any extra messages. Deadlocks are avoided by requesting all locks at once before performing validation. The protocol is fully distributed and employs parallel validation and lock acquisition. A main advantage compared with distributed locking schemes is that locks are held only during commit processing in general, thus considerably reducing the degree of lock contention. As first simulation results have confirmed, this is of particular benefit for high-performance transaction-processing complexes with fast processors.< >

The authors propose a correction to the two-phase deadlock detection algorithm, which has been shown to be incorrect. They prove the correctness of the modified algorithm using a stable property detection technique that observes the system at an absolute time instant. They then use the notion of consistent cuts and vector time to give a simple one-phase deadlock detection algorithm.< >

Traditional approaches to reliability and performance analysis become intractable when dealing with complex parallel and distributed processing systems, computer networks, and software for such systems. New approaches based on Petri nets, dataflow graphs, simulations and approximations are now used in such cases. In order to extend the utility of Petri nets and dataflow graphs, the authors present a decomposition technique that can be used to partition a large system into smaller subsystems, where performance indexes of the total system can be obtained (at least approximately) from the subsystem analyses. The decomposition reduces the computational complexity of analysis significantly. The approach (using marked graph components) is similar to the concept of 'near-completely decomposable' stochastic processes.< >

The authors propose a semi distributed approach for load balancing in large parallel and distributed systems. The proposed scheme is a two level hierarchical scheme which partitions the interconnection structure of a multiprocessor system into independent symmetric regions. Interconnection structures belonging to the classical infinite families of distance transitive graphs are considered. The proposed scheme uses the partitioning property of these graphs by employing Hadamard matrices. The performance of systems consisting of these interconnection structures with varying sizes is evaluated through simulation and compared with a fully distributed scheme. Simulation results indicate that the performance of the proposed scheme improves with the increase in system size.< >
