This paper presents the optimization and evaluation of parallel I/O for the BIPS3D parallel irregular application, a 3-dimensional simulation of BJT and HBT bipolar devices. The parallel version of BIPS3D employs Metis, a library for partitioning graphs, finite element meshes, or sparse matrices. First, we show how the partitioning information provided by Metis can be used in order to improve the performance of parallel I/O. second, we propose a novel technique, called Interval Data Grouping (IDG), which exploits the data replication of mesh nodes for optimizing the scheduling of the parallel file operations. Finally, we evaluate the parallel I/O version of BIPS3D for various existing parallel I/O techniques and present an in-depth analysis of the IDG performance. © 2007 IEEE.

Features of the P2P model, such as scalability and volatility tolerance, have motivated its use in distributed systems. Several generic P2P libraries have been proposed for building distributed applications. However, very few experimental evaluations of these frameworks have been conducted, especially at large scales. Such experimental analyses are important, since they can help system designers to optimize P2P protocols and better understand the benefits of the P2P model. This is particularly important when the P2P model is applied to special use cases, such as grid computing. This paper focuses on the scalability of two main protocols proposed by the JXTA P2P platform. First, we provide a detailed description of the underlying mechanisms used by JXTA to manage its overlay and propagate messages over it: the rendezvous protocol. second, we describe the discovery protocol used to find resources inside a JXTA network. We then report a detailed, large-scale, multi-site experimental evaluation of these protocols, using the nine clusters of the French Grid'5000 testbed. © 2007 IEEE.

This paper presents a framework based on a user driven methodology to obtain analytical models of MPI applications on parallel, systems in a systematic and easy to use way. This methodology consists of two stages. In the first one, instrumentation of the source code is performed using CALL, which is a profiling tool for interacting with the code in an easy, simple and direct way. New features are added to CALL to obtain different performace metrics and store the performance information in XML files. Using this information, an analytical model of the performance behavior is obtained in the second stage by means of R, a language and environment for statistical analysis. The structure of the whole framework is detailed in this paper, and some selected examples are used to show its practical use. © 2007 IEEE.

In this paper, we present an asynchronous consistent global checkpoint collection algorithm which prevents contention for network storage at the file server and hence reduces the checkpointing overhead. The algorithm has two phases: In the first phase, a process initiates consistent global checkpoint collection by saving its state tentatively and asynchronously (called tentative checkpoint) in local memory or remote stable storage if there is no contention for stable storage while saving the state;in the second phase, the message log associated with the tentative checkpoint is stored in stable storage (checkpoint finalization phase). The tentative checkpoint together with the associated message log stored in the stable storage becomes part of a consistent global checkpoint. Under our algorithm, two or more processes can concurrently initiate consistent global checkpoint collection. Every tentative checkpoint will be finalized successfully unless a failure occurs. The finalized checkpoints of each process is assigned a unique sequence number in ascending order. Finalized checkpoints with same sequence number form a consistent global checkpoint. © 2007 IEEE.

The mean-time-between-failure of current high-performance computer systems is much shorter than the running times of many computational applications, whereas those applications are the main workload for those systems. Currently, checkpoint/restart is the most commonly used scheme for such applications to tolerate hardware failures. But this scheme has its performance limitation when the number of processors becomes much larger. In this paper, we propose a novel fault-tolerant parallel algorithm FPAPR. First, we introduce the basic idea of FPAPR. second, we specify the details of how to implement a FPAPR program by using two NPB kernels as examples. Third, we theoretically analyze the overhead of FPAPR, and find out that the overhead of FPAPR decreases with the increase of the number of processors. At last, the experimental results on a 512-CPU cluster show the overhead introduced by the algorithm is very small.

A comparative study of parallel metaheuristics executed in grid environments is proposed, having as case study a genetic algorithm, a simulated annealing algorithm and a random search method. The random search method was constructed in order to offer a lower bound for the comparison. Further-more, a conjugated gradient local search method is employed for each of the algorithms, at different points on the execution path. The algorithms are evaluated using the protein structure prediction problem, the benchmark instances consisting of the tryptophan-cage protein (Brookhaven Protein Data Bank ID 1L2Y) and a-cyclodextrin. The algorithms are designed to benefit from the grid environment although having no particular optimization for the specified benchmarks. The presented results are obtained by running the algorithms independently and, in a second time, in conjunction with the conjugated gradient search method. Experimentations were performed on a nation-wide grid reuniting five distinct administrative domains and cumulating 400 CPUs. The complexity of the protein structure prediction problem remains prohibitive as far as large proteins are concerned, making the use of parallel computing on the computational grid essential for its efficient resolution. © 2007 IEEE.

A language for semi-structured documents, XML has emerged as the core of the web services architecture, and is playing crucial roles in messaging systems, databases, and document processing. However, the processing of XML documents has been regarded as the performance bottleneck in most systems and applications. On the other side, the multicore processor, emerged as a solution for the clock-speed limitation of the modern CPUs, has been growingly prevalent. Leveraging the parallelism provided by the multicorere source to speedup the software execution is becoming the trend of the software development. In this paper, we present a parallel processing model for the XML document. The model is not designed just for a specific XML processing task, instead, it is a general model, by which we are able to explore various parallel XML document processing. The kernel of the model is a stealing-based dynamic load-balancing mechanism, called ThreadCrew, by which multiple threads are able to process the disjointed parts of the XML document in parallel with balanced load distribution. The model also provides a novel mechanism to trace the stealing actions, thus the equivalent sequential result can be gotten by gluing the multiple parallel-running results together. To show the feasibility and effectiveness of our approaches, we present our C# implementation of parallel XML serialization in this paper. Our empirical study shows our parallel XML serialization algorithm can improved the XML serializing performance significantly on a multicore machine. Copyright 2007 ACM.

This paper present the treatment of prepositions and conj unctions in natural language interfaces to databases (NLIDB) that allows better translation of queries expressed in natural language into formal languages. Prepositions and conjunctions weren't sufficiently studied for their usage in NLIDBs, because most of the NLIDBs just look for keywords in the sentences and focus their analysis on nouns and verbs getting rid of auxiliary words in the query. This paper shows that prepositions and conjunctions can be represented as operations using formal set theory. Additionally, since prepositions and conjunctions keep their meaning in any context, their treatment is domain independent. In our experiments we used Spanish language. We validate our approach using two databases;Northwind and Pubsof SQL Server, with a corpus of 198 different queries for the first one and 70 queries for the second one. The 84% of queries were translated correctly for the database Northwind and 80% for Pubs. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2007.

GRIDs are large-scale distributed computing infrastructures that enable the integrated and collaborative use of high-end computers, networks, databases, and scientific instruments owned and managed by multiple organizations. Currently, a lot of national and international grid projects aim in building and using grids. One of them is the Austrian Grid. This project targets different areas of applications, including medical sciences, high-energy physics, applied numerical simulations, astrophysical simulations and solar observations, as well as meteorology and geophysics. Corresponding to the previous experience of the initiators of the project a lot of the applications are parallele ones. In the first part of the talk an overview on Austrian Grid will be presented. We will speak about the goals and the results in general. In the second part of the lecture the focus will be on parallel applications. We will discuss some answers given by the research of Austrian Grid to questions like: how to map parallel applications onto a grid, which kind of tools are necessary, which extensions of standard middleware are desirable. © 2006 IEEE.

A hybrid vision chip is presented for real-time object-based processing for tasks such as positioning and sizing of enclosed objects. This system presents the first artificial silicon retina capable of position and size determination of multiple objects in true parallel fashion. Based on a novel distributed algorithm, this approach uses the input image to enclose a feedback. loop to realise a data-driven pulsating action. The fabricated device is shown to achieve a computation-efficiency of at least 725 million instructions per second per milliwatt and capable of processing up to 2000 frames per second.
