With this workshop, we aim to provide a forum for participants populated by researchers, urban planners, co-creation facilitators, and representatives of municipalities to share their experiences with co-creation tools and methods in urban planning. We focus on reflecting on key issues based on CSCW (computer supported cooperative work) and PD (Participatory design) concepts and approaches regarding engagement, participation, and consensus-making in technology-supported co-creation processes. By concentrating on spatial and urban planning practices, we will connect above mentioned actors to discuss different participation and co-creation processes among disciplines. After briefly introducing state-of-the-art co-creation techniques, design Thinking approaches connected with supporting technologies will be examined and evaluated in group discussions by informing the presented practices with theories and concepts from CSCW and PD research.

Social computing education is gaining traction across computer science and information science disciplines, yet lacks a standardized pedagogical framework for topics to teach, as well as strategies for engaging students. This workshop aims to convene experts in CSCW to develop a cohesive framework for undergraduate and graduate social computing courses. Emphasizing ethical and cultural considerations, the workshop will explore core topics spanning sociological, psychological, technical, and design aspects of social computing. Through interactive sessions, attendees will collaboratively shape a curricular framework that is responsive to diverse country contexts and ethical imperatives. At the conclusion of the workshop, we anticipate we will publish a framework for topics and pedagogical approaches to social computing, as well as a repository of existing courses.. © 2024 Owner/Author.

Identifying design problems is a crucial step for creating plausible solutions, but it is challenging for design novices due to their limited knowledge and experience. Questioning is a promising skill that enables students to independently identify design problems without being passive or relying on instructors. This study explores role-playing interactions with Large Language Model (LLM)-powered Conversational Agents (CAs) to foster the questioning skills of novice design students. We proposed an LLM-powered CA prototype and conducted a preliminary study with 16 novice design students engaged in a real-world design class to observe the interactions between students and the LLM-powered CAs. Our findings indicate that while the CAs stimulated questioning and reduced pressure to ask questions, it also inadvertently led to over-reliance on LLM responses. We proposed design considerations and future works for LLM-powered CA to foster questioning skills. © 2024 Owner/Author.

Enhancing elderly physical health with regular exercise is key in aging society research. However, in the absence of scientifically validated exercise guidelines, older adults are susceptible to adopting excessive or inappropriate exercise methods that may be detrimental to their health. In research related to the elderly's exercise conceptions, the potential for community-engaged investigations has been mentioned. However, no study has proposed a community-based systematic design approach to reshape these misconceptions. Our study closely examined six elderly individuals inclined to exercise near their homes to research on their perception on daily excercise. Then we propose a new design paradigm that integrates an AI Chatbot, FitPal, for personalized exercise guidance and community-driven incentives to correct misconceptions and encourage long-term adherence to exercise among elders. © 2024 ACM.

Technology and AI risk harmful outcomes when not designed responsibly, such as the deterioration of worker well-being and inequitable resource allocation. In response, researchers have created resources for responsible AI design, from reflection aids that support practitioners' critical thinking to frameworks for eliciting stakeholder feedback about technology design. Scholars are also increasingly turning towards participatory methods to include stakeholders in design processes. However, these approaches are criticized for their ambiguity around how to incorporate reflection and participation into development and their potential for "participation washing". To address these, I propose a tool aimed at empowering impacted constituents in using their lived experiences to contextualize datasets and surface new factors for practitioners to consider. This work aims to make contributions by advancing methods for participatory AI design and surfacing initial ideas for how to integrate feedback of impacted stakeholders back into the development processes. © 2024 Owner/Author.

There is increasing interest in the adoption of large language models (LLMs) in HCI research. However, LLMs may often be regarded as a panacea because of their powerful capabilities with an accompanying oversight on whether they are suitable for their intended tasks. We contend that LLMs should be adopted in a critical manner following rigorous evaluation. Accordingly, we present the evaluation of an LLM in identifying logical fallacies that will form part of a digital misinformation intervention. By comparing to a labeled dataset, we found that GPT-4 achieves an accuracy of 0.79, and for our intended use case that excludes invalid or unidentified instances, an accuracy of 0.90. This gives us the confidence to proceed with the application of the LLM while keeping in mind the areas where it still falls short. The paper describes our evaluation approach, results and reflections on the use of the LLM for our intended task. © 2024 ACM.

With aging and postpartum sequelae, female pelvic floor dysfunction (FPFD) has become a prevalent issue that significantly impacts the quality of life for older women in China. In collaboration with medical experts and older female patients, we developed a serious exergame based on mixed reality (MR) technology to assist with pelvic floor muscle (PFM) rehabilitation. The game design incorporates physical exercise plans with platform-jumping gamified mechanics, utilizing visual algorithms to recognize the players leg movements and provide real-time feedback within a virtual environment. Although we have not yet conducted final user experiments, the feedback from experts who reviewed our prototype indicates its strong potential for improving user motivation and training effectiveness. Future plans include collaborative testing with real patients to further validate the game's usability and its impact on promoting long-term training. © 2024 ACM.

The use of technology to combat online misinformation is becoming a prominent topic of research and practice, yet most of the existing solutions do not consider the impact of cognitive biases in misinformation-related decision-making. Addressing this gap, the present paper explores the potential of nudging to inform the design of technological interventions that combat misinformation. We report on a design workshop with 29 participants, who were asked to conceive technology-mediated nudges for misinformation with the use of the "Nudge Deck", a design-support tool that presents 23 interaction design mechanisms for nudging. © 2023 ACM.

The rapid development and deployment of generative AI technologies creates a design challenge of how to proactively understand the implications of productizing and deploying these new technologies, especially with regard to negative design implications. This is especially concerning in CSCW applications, where AI agents can introduce misunderstandings or even misdirections with the people interacting with the agent. In this panel, researchers from academia and industry will reflect on their experiences with ideas, methods, and processes to enable designers to proactively shape the responsible design of genAI in collaborative applications. The panelists represent a range of different approaches, including speculative fiction, design activities, design toolkits, and process guides. We hope that the panel encourages a discussion in the CSCW community around techniques we can put into practice today to enable the responsible design of genAI. © 2024 Owner/Author.

In the era of big data, the continuous development and research of 5G, networks and new technology have promoted the application and implementation of data. As an important output factor of business, the amount of information, the number of data sources, and the quality of data types are increasing exponentially, making smart business technology widely used in business scenarios. Guangxi's sugar output accounts for 60% of China's total, which plays an important role in national sugar safety. In recent years, it has continuously promoted the digital transformation of the sugar industry. The "big data screen"platform was designed using data visualization, which has played a role in promoting the digital transformation of sugar production. This paper analyzes and studies the visualization design of intelligent business data by taking "big data screen"as an example, and introduces the design method of computer-supported cooperative work (CSCW) program suitable for business applications. © 2023 IEEE.
