An important class of parallel processing jobs on clusters today are workflow-based applications that process large amounts of data in parallel. Traditional cluster performance tools are designed for tightly coupled parallel jobs, and not as effective for this type of application. We describe how the NetLogger Toolkit methodology is more appropriate for this class of cluster computing, and describe our new automatic workflow anomaly detection component. We also describe how this methodology is being used by the Nearby Supernova Factory (SNfactory) project at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

This paper presents a case study in creating a parallel and scalable implementation of a scientific data analysis application. We focus on a defect detection and categorization application which analyzes datasets produced by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. In parallelizing this application, we had the following three goals. First, we obviously wanted to achieve high parallel efficiency. Second, we wanted to create an implementation that can scale to disk-resident datasets. third, we wanted to create an easy to maintain and modify implementation, which is possible only through using high-level interfaces. We used a number of techniques for organizing the input data, achieving load balance, and efficiently parallelizing the step for updating and matching with the defect catalog. To meet our third goal, we used a system called FREERIDE (FRamework for Rapid Implementation of Datamining Engines), which was originally developed for parallelizing data mining algorithms. We have carried out a detailed evaluation of our implementation. The main observations from our experiments are as follows: 1) our implementation achieves high parallel efficiency, 2) the execution time remains proportional to the amount of computation even as the dataset becomes disk-resident, and 3) our scheme for load balancing and the method we use for parallelizing updating and matching of the defect catalog are crucial for parallel efficiency of the defect categorization phase.

This paper presents a distributed signcryption with verifiable partial signature (DiSigncryption) protocol that allows a mobile agent owner, participating in e-commerce transaction, to securely delegate and distribute his/her signing capability among a set of trusted third party hosts (TTP-hosts) via a mobile agent. The protocol incorporates three schemes: a novel distributed reputation management scheme, a modified version of the distributed signcryption method proposed in [Y. Mu et al., (2000)], and the agent-based threshold proxy signcryption (ATPS) protocol proposed in [O. Bamasak et al., (2004)]. The most notable feature of the DiSigncryption protocol is that, in addition to allowing secure distributed proxy signature generation, it enables the agent owner to quantitatively assess the trust and reliability of each of the TTP-hosts that s/he has dealt with. These trust and reliability values are then aggregated into an index to guide the agent owner in making his/her decision as which TTP-hosts should be used in his/her next dealing. The security properties of the proposed protocol are analyzed, and the protocol is compared with the most related work.

Scalability refers to the extent of configuration modifications over which a system continues to be economically deployable. Until now, scalability of resource management systems (RMSs) has been examined implicitly by studying different performance measures of the RMS designs for different parameters. However, a framework is yet to be developed for quantitatively evaluating scalability to unambiguously examine the trade-offs among the different RMS designs. In this paper, we present a methodology to study scalability of RMSs based on overhead cost estimation. First, we present a performance model for a managed distributed system (e.g., Grid computing system) that separates the manager and managee. Second, based on the performance model we present a metric used to quantify the scalability of a RMS. third, simulations are used to apply the proposed scalability metric to selected RMSs from the literature. The results show that the proposed metric is useful in quantifying the scalabilities of the RMSs.

In this paper we propose a framework and algorithm for dynamic resource management in a distributed real-time system. Our assumptions are as follows: first, multiple real-time & non real-time processes are active throughout the system. Those processes in the critical path for a given task, i.e., autopilot, fire control (as in firing weapons), surveillance, collaborative planning, are RT for the duration of the task and may or may not be party to multiple tasks in either critical or ancillary capacities. For instance, the radar may be part of the critical path during surveillance, but have uses other than that, say to take a snampshot during a collaborative planning sessions that may serve an ancillary use (as a supplementary illustration for discussion, e.g., "this is the depot we go after tomorrow during a flyover") But then, if you can fly over it, why not go after it then? Another example: during a coordinated maneuver, plane-to-plane communications are in the critical path but during fire control they are not. Second, the operating system or run-time environment has task migration capabilities. third, storage is cheap - can store images of multiple processes in different states on each computing device for purpose of instantiating one or more in any combination on that device and across devices for reconfigurable distributed computing. This paper presents a software architecture and an algorithm for resource management in such systems.

An efficient and scalable discontinuous Galerkin shallow water model on the cubed sphere is developed by extending the transport scheme of Nair et al. (2005). The continuous flux form nonlinear shallow water equations in curvilinear coordinates are developed. Spatial discretization is a nodal basis set of Legendre polynomials. Fluxes along internal element interfaces are approximated by a Lax-Friedrichs scheme. A third-order total variation diminishing Runge-Kutta scheme is applied for time integration, without any filter or limiter. The standard shallow-water test suite of Williamson et al. (1992) is used to validate the model. It is observed that the numerical solutions are accurate, the model conserves mass to machine precision, and there are no spurious oscillations in a test case where zonal flow impinges a mountain. Development time was substantially reduced by building the model in the high order method modeling environment (HOMME) developed at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). Performance and scaling data for the steady state geostrophic flow problem is presented. Sustained performance in excess of 10% of peak is observed out to 64 processors on a Linux cluster.

A huge amount of remotely sensed data is acquired daily and many algorithms for processing the data are complex. Grid computing, which is different from conventional distributed computing, can harness the power of many computers in a network to solve problems. Grid computing has become an exciting way of solving the large-scale or complex problems. To apply the grid computing to remote sensing information, a remote sensing information grid analysis and service node (RSIGN) has been established in Telegeoprocessing Group, Institute of Remote Sensing Applications, Chinese Academy of Sciences. The management and distribution of the tasks are key problems in RSIGN node. How to distribute and manage the tasks has significant influence on the efficiency of the whole grid system. In this paper, we will discuss two main strategies for RSIGN node: geometric parallel and algorithm parallel. Different problems in the grid node need different strategies. On one hand, the data to be processed and analyzed can be divided into sub-datasets and processed on different computers. On the other hand, some algorithms can be rewritten to fit the parallel rules. In the latter case, different steps of processing the whole dataset can be executed on different computers. Through the experience of applied the both strategies on RSIGN node, we compared and evaluated the two strategies, and figured out the merits and disadvantages of two different strategies when applied on remotely sensed information analysis. At the end of the paper, we discuss how to choose the best task managing strategy for different problems in remote sensing information processing and analysis.

parallel file subsystems in today's high-performance computers adopt many I/O optimization strategies that were designed for distributed systems. These strategies, for instance client-side file caching, treat each I/O request process independently, due to the consideration that clients are unlikely related with each other in a distributed environment. However, it is inadequate to apply such strategies directly in the high-performance computers where most of the I/O requests come from the processes that work on the same parallel applications. We believe that client-side caching could perform more effectively if the caching subsystem is aware of the process scope of an application and regards all the application processes as a single client. In this paper, we propose the idea of "collective caching" which coordinates the application processes to manage cache data and achieve cache coherence without involving the I/O servers. To demonstrate this idea, we implemented a collective caching subsystem at user space as a library, which can be incorporated into any message passing interface implementation to increase its portability. The performance evaluation is presented with three I/O benchmarks on an IBM SP using its native parallel file system, GPFS. Our results show significant performance enhancement obtained by collective caching over the traditional approaches.
