The demand of processing speed in modern digital signal processing is huge and requires more computational power than a single processor can provide. To address these demands, distributed and parallel processing in embedded systems is becoming a requirement. So it is essential to do research on algorithm and the parallel programming in the parallel embedded system. MPI (Message Passing Interface) is one of the most important parallel programming standards. Porting MPI to the embedded system will enhance application portability and make parallel programming much easier. This paper presents a novel design and implementation of MPI based on link DMA for DSP-based systems. Through computation the value of pi and PingPong, the results show that the implementation is suitable for parallel programming, especially suitable for large volume of data.

Service Level Agreements (SLAs) are currently one of the major research topics in Grid Computing. Among many system components for supporting of SLA-aware Grid-based workflows, the SLA mapping module receives an important position. Mapping light communication workflows is one main part of the mapping module. With the previously proposed mapping algorithm, the mapping module may become the bottleneck of the system when many requests come in a short period of time. This paper presents a parallel mapping algorithm for light communication SLA-based workflows, which can cope with the problem. Performance measurements deliver evaluation results on the quality of the method.

SystemC has become a very popular standardized language for the modeling of System-On-Chip (SoC) devices. However, due to the ever increasing complexity of SoC designs, the ever longer simulation times affect SoC exploration potential and time-to-market. In order to reduce these times, we have developed a parallel System C kernel. Because the System C semantics require a high level of synchronization which can dramatically affect the performance, we investigate in this paper some ways to reduce the synchronization overheads. We validate then our approaches against an academic design model and a real, industrial application.

In this paper we present a system for the simultaneous visualization of several parallel executed simulation replications. By aggregating the scenes of multiple similar simulations into one single scene it is possible to make a visual statistical analysis of a set of discrete event simulations as well as to easily compare different system parameterizations. The aim of our system is to enhance the model analysis, verification and validation process in terms of speed and ease. The parallel execution of several simulations of complex models and the visualization of these cannot be done on one computer thus a parallel approach is necessary. Our system uses a thin-client and multiple processors on a PC-cluster The rendering and the simulation execution are done on processors of the cluster The client is used only for the visualization of the images transmitted by the cluster and for user interaction.

Relay transmission is a promising technology for improving the throughput and energy efficiency in multi-rate wireless personal area networks (WPANs). In this paper, we propose a distributed relay MAC (DR-MAC) protocol in WiMedia WPANs. DR-MAC extends a distributed reservation protocol (DRP) in WiMedia MAC and neighbor information for relay transmission can be collected during the beacon period. Therefore, DR-MAC can minimize control overhead for relay transmission and is compatible to the standard WiMedia MAC protocol. We also introduce a medium access slot (MAS) allocation procedure for maximizing the efficiency in DR-MAC. Compared with direct transmission, extensive simulation results demonstrate that DR-MAC can improve the throughput by 10% and reduce the energy consumption by 26% when the number of devices is 20.

Most work/flow management systems nowadays are based on centralized client/server architecture. Under this architecture, the response time of request might increase unacceptably when the number of users who login to the system increase quickly and a large amount of requests are sent to the centralized server within a short time period. parallel server architecture could help to resolve the performance bottleneck of a single server. However, a static parallel architecture with a fixed number of servers is not efficient at resource utilization because the numbers of users and their requests usually change time by time, especially for big and fast changes. This paper presents an effective architecture of dynamic resource-provisioning and then the implementation for a parallel workflow management system. There are a series of experiments conducted and the results indicate that it is an effective approach to handling the time-varying workloads in real world WfMS.

distributed systems have evolved from highly regular systems to irregular systems that are not based on any specific architecture. Highly optimized distributed algorithms that are often variants of classic data structures have been developed for these systems. However such approaches may not be effective for applications built on loosely coupled irregular distributed systems. In this paper, we look at distributed priority queues for such systems, where the locality of items cannot be altered and bottlenecks at any one node should be avoided. We present QPID, a new distributed priority queue algorithm for irregular distributed systems in which nodes communicate via message passing only We introduce mechanisms to track and update the head of a logical distributed priority queue without moving items between nodes and avoiding bottlenecks at any single node. A novel lazy update scheme is employed for improving the efficiency of our algorithm. We present our analysis of QPID and argue its correctness.

Valgrind is a dynamic binary translation and instrumentation framework. It is suited to analysing memory usage. It is used in memory validation and profiling tools. Currently, Valgrind is restricted to executing a guest with serialised thread scheduling. This results in lost opportunity for performance when analysing highly parallel applications on parallel architectures. We have extended the framework to allow parallel execution of guest threads. Code caching mechanisms have been made thread-safe, by delaying flushing of translated code, while preserving critical areas of performance. Three methods which preserve atomicity of instructions are implemented and evaluated with respect to speed, reliability and instrumentation effects. Serialising both store and atomic operations preserves atomicity in the strongest sense, but suffers unacceptable performance overhead. Serialising only atomic instructions or utilising host atomic instructions provides speedup in line with native execution. These methods show average slowdowns of only 2.6x and 2.2x over native parallel execution respectively.

Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data has been used to model earth surface in an easy and economic way. As technology is developed the application of LiDAR data is also widely expanded to various areas, such as hydrological modeling, telecommunication service and urban planning. Finding accurate road networks is one of the common applications from massive LiDAR data. A novel algorithm to extract road points has been developed based on both the intensity and height information of data points. First the robustness of the sequential algorithm has been verified with real data points. Then a parallel algorithm has been developed by applying smart area partitioning. The performance of a parallel algorithm showed us a close linear speedup with the use of up to four processors. Experimental results from the parallel algorithm are presented in this paper in detail and demonstrate the robustness of the proposed method.
