Edge detection has acquired enormous importance in computervision research: gaussian filter has been widely used in the past to accomplish this task. Although the gaussian filter has nice scaling behaviour and is computationally elegant, it suffers from the disadvantage of delocalisation of edges when operated at higher scales. Multi-scale processing of an image is thus required. In this paper, the process of edge detection has been looked upon as a reasoning problem. In the past, knowledge handling and reasoning have been attributed to high level vision routines, but from the results presented here, it can be argued that reasoning does play an important role in the process of edge detection. The knowledge base required for this is formed out of the theory of scale space. Particular emphasis is laid on the behaviour of delocalised, missing and false or spurious edges in the scale space. The scale space is formed by operating the LoG filter of different sizes on the input image. The dissimilarity among the zero crossings is measured across the scales. It is useful in the removal of false edges. A compatibility measure relates the zero-crossing contour with the current scale parameter, /spl sigma/. The rules are coded in NEXPERT OBJECT 2.0. The results are compared with Canny's multiple edge detection algorithm (J.F. Canny, 1986).< >

Fractal dimension is a feature used to characterize roughness and self-similarity in a picture. This feature is used in texture segmentation and classification, shape analysis and other problems. An efficient differential box-counting approach to fractal dimension estimation is proposed and compared with four other methods.< >

VIKNET (visual knowledge network), an extension of associative networks that is specifically designed for knowledge representation for recognition of 3-D objects, is introduced. The design criteria, largely influenced by early visionprocessing, are discussed. VIKNET is formally described as an algebraic structure, with network functions defined on it. The input image, also in the form of a network, is recognized by a partial matching algorithm. A completely worked out example demonstrates the efficacy of the scheme even for shapes subjected to viewing angle transforms.< >

Entropy of order q (depending on the information contained in a sequence of gray levels of length q) and conditional entropy of an image are defined. Using these definitions, two algorithms are formulated and implemented with the help of its co-occurrence matrix. Their superiority for image thresholding (object-background classification) is established.< >

The introduction of metrology in engineering opened out new avenues and today this is an established and expanding field of engineering. From a modest beginning of simple inspection of parts to ensure quality, today it has grown into a vast field of specialised technology. Indications are that there is more to come in this field with the introduction of high precision and automation in manufacture. Due to the significant role played by metrology in present day manufacture, the term Manufacturing Metrology sounds more appropriate than any of the terms previously used. New areas like robot metrology position measurements of robot within its large work zone, further integration of inspection with manufacture, computervision and imageprocessing techniques etc. are developing fast and are finding reliable areas of applications.

Welcome to the proceedings of the 2010 International conferences on Signal Proce- ing, imageprocessing and Pattern Recognition (SIP 2010), and Multimedia, C- puter graphics and Broadcasting (MulGraB 2010) – two of the partnering events of the Second International Mega-conference on Future Generation Information Te- nology (FGIT 2010). SIP and MulGraB bring together researchers from academia and industry as well as practitioners to share ideas, problems and solutions relating to the multifaceted - pects of image, signal, and multimedia processing, including their links to compu- tional sciences, mathematics and information technology. In total, 1,630 papers were submitted to FGIT 2010 from 30 countries, which - cludes 225 papers submitted to SIP/MulGraB 2010. The submitted papers went through a rigorous reviewing process: 395 of the 1,630 papers were accepted for FGIT 2010, while 53 papers were accepted for SIP/MulGraB 2010. Of the 53 papers 8 were selected for the special FGIT 2010 volume published by Springer in the LNCS series. 37 papers are published in this volume, and 8 papers were withdrawn due to technical reasons. We would like to acknowledge the great effort of the SIP/MulGraB 2010 Inter- tional Advisory Boards and members of the International Program Committees, as well as all the organizations and individuals who supported the idea of publishing this volume of proceedings, including SERSC and Springer. Also, the success of these two conferences would not have been possible without the huge support from our sponsors and the work of the Chairs and Organizing Committee.
