Previous efforts at facial expression recognition have been based on the Facial Action Coding System (FACS), a representation developed in order to allow human psychologists to code expression from static facial "mugshots." We develop new more accurate representations for facial expression by building a video database of facial expressions and then probabilistically characterizing the facial muscle activation associated with each expression using a detailed physical model of the skin and muscles. This produces a muscle based representation of facial motion, which is then used to recognize facial expressions in two different ways. The first method uses the physics based model directly, by recognizing expressions through comparison of estimated muscle activations. The second method uses the physics based model to generate spatio temporal motion energy templates of the whole face for each different expression. These simple, biologically plausible motion energy "templates" are then used for recognition. Both methods show substantially greater accuracy at expression recognition than has been previously achieved.< >

The IEEE Std. 1596-1992 for the Scalable Coherent Interface (SCI) specifies a topology-independent communication protocol with the possibility of connecting up to 64 K nodes. SCILab is a collection of tools to simulate the behavior of SCI based networks. It is aimed at studying the influence of linkspeed, interface design and SCI protocols under various loading conditions for different topologies. Effects due to the SCI bandwidth allocation, queue acceptance and cache coherency protocols are taken into account. Large SCI systems consisting of rings interconnected by switches can be investigated. Examples of SCI nodes whose behavior can be specified by user definable parameters are also included in the model. The simulations produce statistics on the SCI link traffic, bandwidth available to SCI nodes such as processors and memories, and the latency of SCI packets traveling through a network from source to target.< >

We consider the problem of mapping large scale FEM graphs to highly parallel distributed memory computers. Typically, these programs show a low-dimensional grid-like communication structure. We argue that conventional domain decomposition methods that are usually employed today are not well suited for future highly parallel computers as they do not take into account the interconnection structure of the parallel computer resulting in a large communication overhead. Therefore we propose a new mapping heuristic which performs both, partitioning of the solution domain and processor allocation in one integrated step. Our procedure is based on the ability of Kohonen neural networks to exploit topological similarities of an input space and a grid-like structured network: to complete a neighbourhood preserving mapping between the set of discretization points and the parallel computer.< >

Many aspects of the real world continue to plague stereo matching systems. One of these is perspective foreshortening, an effect that occurs when a surface is viewed at a sharp angle. Because each stereo camera has a slightly different view, the image of the surface is more compressed and occupies a smaller area in one view. These effects cause problems because most stereo methods compare similarly sized regions (using the same-sized windows in both images), tacitly assuming that objects occupy the same extents in both images. Clearly this condition is violated by perspective foreshortening. We show how to overcome this problem using a local spatial frequency representation. A simple geometric analysis leads to an elegant solution in the frequency domain which, when applied to a Gabor filter-based stereo system, increases the system's maximum matchable surface angle from 30 degrees to over 75 degrees.

Automatic object recognition is a difficult and as yet unsolved problem. There exist, however, a number of benign circumstances in which a great deal is known about all aspects of the problem--enough, in principle, to predict exactly the appearance of the image when given a small amount of information about a few objects present and their locations. In those case, it is rather straightforward to reverse the process and infer from the image the identity and locations of the objects.

Many CAD-based recognition systems have relied on accurate pose estimation and back-projection in order to verify weak correspondences between simple image and model features. This coupling of recognition and localization requires object models which capture the exact geometry of the object, precluding the recognition of generic objects in less restricted domains. In this paper, we synthesize a new approach to 3-D object shape recovery which decouples the processes of recognizing and localizing objects. We first use qualitative shape recovery techniques to recognize objects. If and only if detailed shape or pose is required, we then use the recovered qualitative shape to provide strong fitting constraints on physics-based deformable model recovery techniques.

We describe a computer vision system for observing the 'action units' of a face using video sequences as input. The visual observation (sensing) is achieved by using an optimal estimation optical flow method coupled with a geometric and a physical (muscle) model describing the facial structure. This modeling results in a time-varying spatial patterning of facial shape and a parametric representation of the independent muscle action groups, responsible for the observed facial motions. These muscle action patterns may then be used for analysis, interpretation, and synthesis. Thus, by interpreting facial motions within a physics-based optimal estimation framework, a new control model of facial movement is developed. The newly extracted action units (which we name 'FACS+') are both physics and geometry-based, and extend the well-known FACS parameters for facial expressions by adding temporal information and non-local spatial patterning of facial motion.

This paper proposes a framework for animation that can achieve the intricacy of motion evident in certain natural ecosystems with minimal input from the animator. The realistic appearance, movement, and behavior of individual animals, as well as the patterns of behavior evident in groups of animals fall within the scope of the framework. Our approach to emulating this level of natural complexity is to model each animal holistically as an autonomous agent situated in its physical world. To demonstrate the approach, we develop a physics-based, virtual marine world. The world is inhabited by artificial fishes that can swim hydrodynamically in simulated water through the motor control of internal muscles that motivates fins. Their repertoire of behaviors relies on their perception of the dynamic environment. As in nature, the detailed motions of artificial fishes in their virtual habitat are not entirely predictable because they are not scripted.
