Describes a GSPN-based approach to performance evaluation of parallel MIMD architectures with mesh interconnection schemes. The analysis considers regular computational structures in which data exchange and inter-process synchronization require communication only among processors that are physically connected. The effectiveness of the modeling technique for this class of architectures is shown through examples considering both the effect of the interaction policies among processes and the benefit of multitrasking on the global efficiency of the architecture.< >

An analysis is conducted of a number of computervision approaches that the author has been involved in constructing. These range from the ACRONYM model-basedvision system through more recent mobile robot vision systems. In each case success has been achieved by treating vision as a source of constraint, rather than a deliverer of a world model. The way in which vision works is then entirely task dependent.
It is now widely accepted that a certain class of naturally occurring textures are best modeled using the stochastic fractal methodologies proposed by Mandelbrot. Currently, most scene modeling techniques which appeal...

The authors present a stereo vision system in which they attempt to achieve robustness with respect to scene characteristics, from textured outdoor scenes to environments composed of highly regular man-made objects. The system offers the advantages of both area-based (dense map) and feature-based (accurate disparity) processing by combining them whenever possible. The authors are able to geneate a disparity map that is sufficiently accurate to allow them to detect depth and surface orientation discontinuities, provided that the resolution is fine enough. They use an area-based cross-correlation, along with an ordering constraint and a weak surface smoothness assumption to produce an initial disparity map. Unlike other approaches, however, a match is accepted only if both views agree on a correlation peak and this peak is strong enough. This disparity map is a blurred version of the true one, however, because of the smoothing inherent in the correlation. The problem is most acute at C/sub 0/ (depth) and C/sub 1/ (crease) discontinuities but can be mitigated by introducing the edge information: the disparity map is adaptively smoothed subject to the constraint that the disparity at edges is fixed.< >

A model-basedvision system called Successor is being developed. A major component of this system is its geometric modeler, which combines straight homogeneous generalized cylinders through set operations. This geometric modeling system is described. The representations that have been adopted for primitives and composite objects, and the methods that have been developed to specify and build these representations, are discussed. These methods have all been fully implemented and integrated, and are illustrated on some examples. Finally, a preliminary extension to the modeling of object classes is demonstrated.

How an object appears in an image is considered as a result of interaction between object properties and sensor characteristics. Two aspects of sensor characteristics are considered: sensor detectability and sensor reliability. Sensor detectability specifies what kind of features can be detected and in what area the features are detected;sensor reliability specifies how reliable detected features are. The configuration space is defined to represent sensor characteristics. A representation method of the sensor detectability in the configuration space is proposed. Under this framework, a light-stripe range finder is characterized as an example.

Techniques for computer perception, particularly vision, usually consist of descriptive modeling, where the parameters and even the form of the model are determined by the observations. Much of sensory processing has had limited success because it has asked the wrong question: 'What is the signal (observation or image)? ' When a model of the function generating the observations is available, as it frequently is, the appropriate question is 'What would cause the observed signal? ' Such a question leads naturally to state-space methods. This paper will discuss the task of computer perception, and the advantages of using the knowledge of the observation model.

An approach to understanding general 3-D motion of a rigid body from image sequences is presented. based on dynamics, a locally constant angular momentum (LCAM) model is introduced. The model is local in the sense that it is applied to a limited number of image frames at a time. Specifically, the model constrains the motion, over a local frame subsequence, to be a superposition of precession and translation. The trajectory of the rotation center is approximated by a vector polynomial. The nature and parameters of short-term motion can be estimated continuously with the goal of understanding motion through the image sequence. Noise smoothing is achieved by overdetermination and a least-squares criterion. based on the assumption that the motion is smooth, object positions and motion in the near future can be predicted, and short missing subsequences can be recovered. Simulation results are given for both noisy synthetic data and images taken of a model airplane.

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed conference proceedings of the 6th International Symposium on Biomedical Simulation (ISBMS) which was held in Strasbourg, France, in October 2014. Biomedical modeling and simulation are at the center stage of worldwide efforts to understand and replicate the behavior and function of the human organism. Large scale initiatives such as the Physiome Project, Virtual Physiological Human and Blue Brain Project aim to develop advanced computational models that will facilitate the understanding of the integrative function of cells, organs, and organisms, with the ultimate goal of delivering truly personalized medicine. At the same time, progress in modeling, numerical techniques and haptics has enabled more complex and interactive simulations. The 27 revised full papers (including 16 regular and 11 short papers) were carefully selected from 45 submissions and cover topics such as training systems and haptics, physics-based registration, vascular modeling and simulation, image and simulation, modeling, surgical planning, analysis, characterization and validation.
