Optimistic techniques can improve the performance of discrete-event simulations, but one area where optimistic simulators have been unable to show performance improvement is in the simulation of parallel programs. Unfortunately, parallel program simulation using direct execution is difficult: the use of direct execution implies that the memory and computation requirements of the simulator are at least as large as that of the target application which restricts the target systems and application problem sizes that can be studied. Memory usage is especially important for optimistic simulators due to the need for periodic state-saving and rollback. In our research we addressed this problem and have implemented a simulation library running a Time-Warp-based optimistic engine that uses direct execution to simulate and predict the performance of parallel MPI program while attaining good simulation speedup. For program with data sets too large to be directly executed with our optimistic simulator, we reduced the memory and computational needs of these programs by utilizing a static task graph and code-slicing methodology an approach which also exhibited good performance speedup.

The paper describes a parallel proximity detection algorithm and illustrates its application to the problem of conflict detection in an aviation simulation. The algorithm invokes a previously designed sequential function in parallel, using spatial information acquired during the traversal of a quad tree, to keep the separate invocations of the function as independent as possible. The method is general applicable to any function (not just conflict detection) whose arguments are spatially organized. Empirical results show that a single-threaded version of the algorithm sped up the simulation by 57%, while a four-threaded parallel version extracted 30% of the remaining additional speedup. These results are even more noteworthy, given that the architecture of the simulation remains intact; we only replace the invocation mechanism for one function.

In this paper we study the influence of spatio-temporal correlations on the dynamic runtime behavior of the optimistic parallel Time Warp simulation method. By using the Ising spin model, we show experimentally that the distribution of the number of rolled back events behaves as a power-law distribution over a large range of sub-critical Ising temperatures and decays exponentially or super-critical Ising temperatures. For critical Ising temperatures, where long-range correlations occur the computational complexity, of Time Warp and physical complexity of the Ising spin model are entangled and contribute both to the runtime behavior in a nonlinear way.

We compare the performance of a simulation code for lattice quantum electrodynamics, running on the cluster computer ALiCE (Alpha-Linux-Cluster-Engine) and the Cray T3E-1200 system. We present results from simulations using the novel parallelized multicanonical hybrid Monte Carlo algorithm. We merge multicanonical simulation techniques with the hybrid Monte Carlo algorithm to achieve a parallel scheme, and thus to be able to fight the notorious metastabilities by use of high performance parallel computers. We demonstrate for this application field that ALiCE is superior to the Cray T3E-1200 by factors of about 1.3 to 2.

A new parallel algorithm for simulating Ising spin systems is presented. The sequential prototype is the n-fold way algorithm, which is efficient but is hard to parallelize using conservative methods. Our parallel algorithm is optimistic. Unlike other optimistic algorithms, e.g., Time Warp, our algorithm is synchronous. It also belongs to the class of simulations known as "relaxation"; hence it is named "synchronous relaxation." We derive performance guarantees for this algorithm. If N is the number of PEs, then under weak assumptions we show that the number of correct events processed per unit of time is, on average, at least of order N/logN. All communication delays, processing time, and busy waits are taken into account.

This paper analyzes the Detailed Policy Assessment Tool (DPAT) as an example of a practical real-world aviation simulation that uses optimistic simulation technology. We present a review of analyses that have used DPAT results to support their conclusions, and discuss the design and performance of the system in the context of parallel simulation. The thrust of this paper is to explain how DPAT avoids some of the problems associated with optimistic simulation, while exploiting its strengths. A key conclusion is that parallel simulation technology, particularly optimistic synchronization, needs to be built into the product from its conceptual design through implementation, as opposed to adding it afterwards.

With fixed lookahead information in a simulation model, the overhead of asynchronous conservative parallel simulation lies in the mechanism used for propagating time updates in order for logical processes to safely advance their local simulation clocks. Studies have shown that a good scheduling algorithm should preferentially schedule processes containing events on the critical path. This paper introduces a lock-free algorithm for scheduling logical processes in conservative parallel discrete-event simulation on shared-memory multiprocessor machines. The algorithm uses fetch and add operations that help avoid inefficiencies associated with using locks. The lock-free algorithm is robust. Experiments show that, compared with the scheduling algorithm using locks, the lock-free algorithm exhibits better performance when the number of logical processes assigned to each processor is small or when the workload becomes significant. In models with large number of logical processes, our algorithm shows only modest increase in execution time due to the overhead in the algorithm for extra bookkeeping.

In this paper, a parallel object collection (POC) model is introduced to support data parallelism in a parallel object-oriented system. This model is based on the idea of data partitioning and method replication. To achieve load-balancing, partition objects are dynamically migrated at runtime according to the system load situation. A threshold-based strategy is used in the dynamic load-balancing. To avoid over-convergence of load during partition object migration, a new destination node selection algorithm is proposed. The threshold values used in the algorithm are also adaptively adjusted to better reflect the fluctuation of the load during execution. To evaluate the performance of the dynamic load balancing algorithm, simulation experiments are conducted. The simulation results are reported and discussed in the paper.

This paper presents a new algorithm and its experimental results for self-stabilizing depth-first token circulation in arbitrary networks. The algorithm has an additional property of avoiding faulty privileges. Using an auxiliary token and a state with a large state space, almost all faulty privileges can be prevented. simulation experiments show its performance compared with the previously proposed algorithm. Detailed results on the relation between network topologies and stabilization time, the effects of number of faults are revealed.

A delivery problem which reduces to an NP-complete set-partitioning problem is considered. Two algorithms of parallel simulated annealing, i.e. the simultaneous independent searches and the simultaneous periodically interacting searches are investigated. The objective is to improve the accuracy of solutions to the problem by applying parallelism. The accuracy of a solution is meant as its proximity to the optimum solution. The empirical evidence supported by the statistical analysis indicates that the interaction of processes in parallel simulated annealing can yield more accurate solutions to the delivery problem as compared to the case when the processes run independently.
