In this paper we present a simulation environment for storage area networks called SIMLAB. SIMLAB is a part of the PRESTO project, which is a joint project of the Electrical Engineering Department and the Computer Science Department of the Paderborn University. The aim of the PRESTO project is to construct a scalable and resource-efficient storage network that can support the real-time delivery of data. SIMLAB has been implemented to aid the development and verification of distributed algorithms for this storage network. However, it has been designed in such a way that it can also be used for the simulation of many other types of networking problems. SIMLAB is based on C++ and common libraries and input/output formats, which ensures that SIMLAB can be used on many different platforms. We therefore expect SIMLAB to be useful also for other people working on similar problems.

In a distributed simulation, simulation components of various types are executed at geographically different locations, forming a simulation federation to create a common virtual environment. Under the High Level Architecture (HLA), information that will be produced and consumed by a simulation component is defined in its object model, and how that information is produced and consumed is well encapsulated inside the simulation component's implementation. However in the current implementation of the HLA's Runtime Infrastructure (RTI), information hiding between groups of simulation components in a simulation federation is not addressed. The authors discuss how hierarchical federation architectures can be used to tackle this problem. The hierarchical federation architecture adopted in the paper differs from the existing architectures in that it is based on a hybrid approach for interoperability between simulation federations. To demonstrate information hiding using the architecture, a distributed semiconductor supply-chain simulation is also described.

This paper addresses the issue of efficient and accurate performance prediction of large-scale message-passing applications on high performance architectures using simulation. Such simulators are often based on parallel discrete event simulation, typically using the conservative protocol to synchronize the simulation threads. The paper considers how a compiler can be used to automatically extract information about the lookahead present in the application and how this can be used to improve the performance of the null protocol used for synchronization. These techniques are implemented in the MPI-Sim simulator and dHPF compiler which had previous been extended to work together for optimizing the simulation of local computational components of an application. The results show that the availability of lookahead ranging improves the runtime of the simulator by factors ranging front 9% up to two orders of magnitude, with 30-60% improvements being typical for the real-world codes. The experiments also show that these improvements are directly correlated with reductions by the number of null messages required by the simulations.

When used to simulate manufacturing systems, most existing parallel simulation languages cannot easily implement some features of those systems, such as the scheduling rules of a machine or the sharing of operators by multiple machines. This paper presents the design and implementation of a parallel Object-oriented Manufacturing simulation Language, called POMSim. A POMSim simulation is developed by using the concept of classes (entity-types) and inheritance to support iterative design of efficient simulation models. POMSim completely hides all the details of parallel simulation, and provides simple and direct constructs to efficiently model the scheduling rules in manufacturing simulation. It also provides asynchronous method invocation and synchronous function call. Pomsim libraries predefine a set of basic classes for manufacturing simulation, each of which represents a particular component in the physical manufacturing system.

Real-time messages, which have user defined end-to-end delay requirements, can be delivered using a real-time communication method. This paper proposes two path selection algorithms for real time communication and conducts a simulation study to evaluate these two algorithms. On the basis of this simulation study, it can be seen that, for effective real-time communication, it is important to consider the number of hops utilized by each path and the link utilization of all effected links. In particular, the number of hops required for each path was found to be the most important factor. The proposed path selection algorithms are found to perform as well or better than previously proposed algorithms while using fewer network resources.

Recently a new class of synchronization algorithms for parallel discrete event simulation has been proposed, namely the near perfect state information algorithms, which are based on a motion of error potential to control the optimism of event execution. An algorithm of this class, called elastic time algorithms (ETA), has been instantiated. In this algorithm, the error potential is computed using temporal information (next event timestamp, simulation clocks etc.) and is then translated into event execution delay based on a constant factor. In this paper we present a scaled version of ETA (SETA), in which the error potential is translated into event execution delay based on both a constant factor and art additional scaling factor determined dynamically as a function of the event granularity. We have implemented versions of ETA and SETA for a cluster of PCs connected by a Myrinet switch and we have established in an empirical study that SETA outperforms ETA if there is difference in the granularity of different event types.

We introduce a new approach to performance analysis of DSP-kernel software, based on high-level abstractions, called implicit cache simulation. The method can take into account any kind of instruction cache as well as code allocation effects. We show that no loss of estimation accuracy is implied by the proposed abstractions. Moreover the speed of the method is such that it can be efficiently used as a system-level design tool. We compare implicit cache simulation with the trace-driven simulation approach, commonly used in industry. Experimental results show that our method is 4 times faster in the average and up to 11 times faster than trace-driven simulation.

Networks of workstations have become a popular architecture for distributed simulation due to their high availability as opposed to specialized multiprocessor computers. Networks of workstations are also a well-suited framework for distributed simulation systems based on the High Level Architecture (HLA). However, using workstations in a distributed simulation system may eventually effect the availability of computing resources for the users who need their computers as working tools. Thus, for coarse grained distributed simulation it may be desirable to let the users control to what extent their workstations should participate in a distributed simulation. In this paper, we present a resource sharing system (RSS) that provides a client user interface on each potentially participating workstation. With the RSS clients, users of workstations can control the availability of their computer for the HLA simulation federation. An RSS manager keeps track of available computing resources and balances the participating HLA federates among the available workstations.

A distributed object is a reusable, self-contained piece of software that cooperates with other objects on the same machine or across a network in a plug-and-play fashion via a well-defined interface. The Numerical Propulsion System simulation (NPSS) attempts to provide a collaborative aircraft engine design and simulation environment based on this concept. Many scientific applications in aerodynamics and solid mechanics are written in Fortran. Refitting these legacy Fortran codes with distributed objects can increase the code reusability. The remote variable scheme provided in NPSS helps programmers easily migrate the Fortran codes towards a client-server platform. This scheme gives the client the capability of accessing the variables at the server site. Through the operator overloading features in C++, remote variables can be used in much the same way as traditional variables. The remote variable scheme adopts the lazy update approach and the prefetch method. Preliminary performance evaluation shows that communication overhead can be greatly reduced.

Optimistic and conservative simulation algorithms have been effective for speeding up the execution of many simulation programs. Event stepped techniques have also been shown to be effective for certain types of problems. This paper presents a conjecture that sparse systems are effectively simulated by conservative and optimistic techniques, where sparseness is characterized by the ratio of output generating states to non-output generating states. The speedup results for a representative sparse simulation are shown to support this conjecture.
