We have developed FDPS (Framework for Developing Particle Simulator), which enables researchers and programmers to develop high-performance particle simulation codes easily. The basic idea of FDPS is to separate the program code for complex parallelization including domain decomposition, redistribution of particles, and exchange of particle information for interaction calculation between nodes, from actual interaction calculation and orbital integration. FDPS pro- vides the former part and the users write the latter. Thus, a user can implement, for example, a high-performance N- body code, only in 120 lines. In this paper, we present the structure and implementation of FDPS, and describe its performance on two sample applications: gravitational N-body simulation and Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics simulation. Both codes show very good parallel efficiency and scalability on the K computer. FDPS lets the researchers concentrate on the implementation of physics and mathematical schemes, without wasting their time on the development and performance tuning of their codes. © 2015 ACM.

Efficient pseudorecursive evaluation schemes for non-adaptive sparse grids 1

In this work we propose novel algorithms for storing and evaluating sparse grid functions, operating on regular (not spatially adaptive), yet potentially dimensionally adaptive grid types. Besides regular sparse grids our approach includes truncated grids, both with and without boundary grid points. Similar to the implicit data structures proposed in Feuersänger (Dünngitterverfahren für hochdimensionale elliptische partielle Differntialgleichungen. Diploma Thesis, Institut für Numerische simulation, Universität Bonn, 2005) and Murarasu et al. (proceedings of the 16th ACM Symposium on Principles and Practice of parallel Programming. Cambridge University Press, New York, 2011, pp. 25–34) we also define a bijective mapping from the multi-dimensional space of grid points to a contiguous index, such that the grid data can be stored in a simple array without overhead. Our approach is especially well-suited to exploit all levels of current commodity hardware, including cache-levels and vector extensions. Furthermore, this kind of data structure is extremely attractive for today’s real-time applications, as it gives direct access to the hierarchical structure of the grids, while outperforming other common sparse grid structures (hash maps, etc.) which do not match with modern compute platforms that well. For dimensionality d ≤10 we achieve good speedups on a 12 core Intel Westmere-EP NUMA platform compared to the results presented in Murarasu et al. (proceedings of the International Conference on Computational Science—ICCS 2012. Procedia Computer Science, 2012). As we show, this also holds for the results obtained on Nvidia Fermi GPUs, for which we observe speedups over our own CPU implementation of up to 4.5 when dealing with moderate dimensionality. In high-dimensional settings, in the order of tens to hundreds of dimensions, our sparse grid evaluation kernels on the CPU outperform any other known implementation. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2014.

In adaptive distributed parallel applications the adaptation process is based on the ability to change some characteristics of parallel components, such as the parallelism form and the parallelism degree, in response to unexpected execution conditions. Although existing research work has studied this problem, it is of increasing importance to investigate adaptation strategies able to reach important properties like the stability of control decisions, i.e. to guarantee that reconfigurations are effective and durable, and control optimality, expressed by means of cooperative and non-cooperative agreements between decisions of different controllers. These properties are crucial in distributed environments like Grids and Clouds, where reconfigurations imply a cost both in terms of a performance degradation as well as a monetary charge. In this paper we briefly introduce the basic ideas of our methodology and we introduce different adaptation strategies based on alternative formulations of the Model-based Predictive Control technique. First hints about the effectiveness of our approach are discussed through experiments developed in a simulation environment. © 2013 ACM.

The ubiquitous deployment of mobile and sensor devices is creating a new environment, namely the Internet of Things (IoT), that enables a wide range of future Internet applications. In this work, we present Mobile Fog, a high level programming model for future Internet applications that are geospatially distributed, large-scale, and latency-sensitive. We analyze use cases for the programming model with camera network and connected vehicle applications to show the efficacy of Mobile Fog. We also evaluate application performance through simulation. © 2013 ACM.

This paper proposes a strategy for distributed model predictive control (DMPC) with event-based communication for piecewise affine (PWA) systems coupled via a common cost function and, possibly non-convex, constraints. In order to achieve cooperation between subsystems, each subsystem optimizes over its own inputs and the inputs of directly interconnected systems. In the proposed scheme, all subsystems optimize in parallel in each time step, and the subsystems only communicate information to interconnected subsystems if a triggering condition is met. Under some assumptions on a terminal control law, recursive feasibility and stability of the scheme are established. simulation results for a platoon of autonomous vehicles are used to illustrate the approach. Discrete Event simulation (DES) is a widely used technique in which the state of the simulator is updated by events happening at discrete points in time (hence the name). DES is used to model and analyze many kinds of systems, including computer architectures, communication networks, street traffic, and others. parallel and distributed simulation (PADS) aims at improving the efficiency of DES by partitioning the simulation model across multiple processing elements, in order to enable larger and/or more detailed studies to be carried out. The interest on PADS is increasing since the widespread availability of multicore processors and affordable high performance computing clusters. However, designing parallel simulation models requires considerable expertise, the result being that PADS techniques are not as widespread as they could be. In this paper we describe ErlangTW, a parallel simulation middleware based on the Time Warp synchronization protocol. ErlangTW is entirely written in Erlang, a concurrent, functional programming language specifically targeted at building distributed systems. We argue that writing parallel simulation models in Erlang is considerably easier than using conventional programming languages. Moreover, ErlangTW allows simulation models to be executed either on single-core, multicore and distributed computing architectures. We describe the design and prototype implementation of ErlangTW, and report some preliminary performance results on multicore and distributed architectures using the well known PHOLD benchmark. © 2012 ACM.
