We design and implement a high availability parallel run-time system---ChaRM64, a Checkpoint- based Rollback Recovery and Migration system for parallel running programs on a cluster of IA-64 computers. At first, we discuss our solution of a user-level, single process checkpoint/recovery library running on IA-64 systems. Based on this library, ChaRM64 is realized, which implements a user-transparent, coordinated checkpointing and rollback recovery (CRR) mechanism, quasi-asynchronous migration and the dynamic reconfiguration function. Owing to the above techniques and efficient error detection, ChaRM64 can handle cluster node crashes and hardware transient faults in a IA-64 cluster. Now ChaRM64 for PVM has been implemented in Linux and the MPI version is under construction. As we know, there are few similar projects accomplished for IA-64 architecture.

Many researches have been devoted to designing appropriate concurrency control algorithms for real-time database systems, which not only satisfy consistency requirements but also meet transaction timing constraints as much as possible. Optimistic concurrency control protocols have the nice properties of being nonblocking and deadlock-free, but they have the problems of late conflict detection and transaction restarts. Although the number of transaction restarts is reduced by dynamic adjustment of serialization order (DASO) in real-time database systems, it still has some unnecessary transaction restarts. We first propose a new method called dynamic adjustment of execution order (DAEO) and a new optimistic concurrency control algorithm based on DAEO, which can reduce the number of unnecessary restarts near to zero and outperforms the previous algorithms, and then discuss the experiments and the results.

Summary form only given. Data mining is an application that is commonly executed on massively parallel systems, often using clusters with hundreds of processors. With a disk-based data store, however, the data must first be delivered to the processors before effective mining can take place. Here, we describe the prototype of an experimental system that moves processing closer to where the data resides, on the disk, and exploits massive parallelism via reconfigurable hardware to perform the computation. The performance of the prototype is also reported.

For several years, MPI has been the de facto standard for writing parallel applications. One of the most popular MPI implementations is MPICH. Its successor, MPICH2, features a completely new design that provides more performance and flexibility. To ensure portability, it has a hierarchical structure based on which porting can be done at different levels. In this paper, we present our experiences in designing and implementing MPICH2 over InfiniBand, Because of its high performance and open standard, InfiniBand is gaining popularity in the area of high-performance computing. Our study focuses on optimizing the performance of MPI-1 functions in MPICH2. One of our objectives is to exploit Remote Direct Memory Access (RDMA) in InfiniBand to achieve high performance. We have based our design on the. RDMA Channel interface provided by MPICH2, which encapsulates architecture-dependent communication functionalities into a very small set of functions. Starting with a basic design, we apply different optimizations and also propose a zero-copy-based design. We characterize the impact of our optimizations and designs using microbenchmarks. We have also performed an application-level evaluation using the NAS parallel Benchmarks. Our optimized MPICH2 implementation achieves 7.6 μs latency and 857 MB/S bandwidth, which are close to the raw performance of the underlying InfiniBand layer. Our study shows that the RDMA Channel interface in MPICH2 provides a simple, yet powerful, abstraction that enables implemen tations with high performance by exploiting RDMA operations in InfiniBand. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first high-performance design and implementation of MPICH2 on InfiniBand using RDMA support.

distributed data mining (DDM) is the semi-automatic pattern extraction of distributed data sources. The next generation of the data mining studies will be distributed data mining for many reasons. first of all, most of the current used data mining techniques require all data to be resident in memory, i.e., the mining process must be done at the data source site. This is not feasible for the exponential growth of the data stored in organization(s) databases. Another important reason is that data is inherently distributed for fault tolerance purposes. DDM requires two main decisions about the DDM implementations: A distributed computation paradigm (message passing, RPC, mobile agents), and the used integration techniques (Knowledge probing, CDM) in order to aggregate and integrate the results of the various distributed data miners. Recently, the new distributed computation paradigm, which has been evolved as mobile agent is widely used. Mobile agent is a thread of control that can trigger the transfer of arbitrary code to a remote computer. Mobile agents paradigm has several advantages: Conserving bandwidth and reducing latencies. Also, complex, efficient and robust behaviours can be realized with surprisingly little code. Mobile agents can be used to support weak clients, allow robust remote interaction, and provide scalability. In this paper, we propose a new model that can benefit from the mobile agent paradigm to build an efficient DDM model. Since the size of the data to be migrated in the DDM process is huge, our model will overcome the communication bottleneck by using mobile agents paradigm. Our model divides the DDM process into several stages that can be done in parallel on different data sources: Preparation stage, data mining stage and knowledge integration stage. Our analysis of their scale, performance, availability and data integrity draws attention to the so-called 'storage gap'. We propose 'persistent memory' as the technology to bridge that gap. Its impact is demonstrated using practical business information processing scenarios. We conclude with a discussion of our prototype, the results achieved, and the challenges that lie ahead.

Recent trends in the database paradigm are to incorporate fuzzy sets to tackle imprecise and ambiguous information of real world problems. In this paper, using the concepts of fuzzy sets and possibility theory, a FTS relational model is developed to extend the TS-relational model by Ee Peng Lilm et al. (1999). The extended model integrates local fuzzy databases by merging the respective export fuzzy databases to generate a set of FTS relations of fuzzy multidatabase. A set of algebraic operations is defined to manipulate the FTS relations and their correctness is established. A set of algebraic rules is also presented to optimize FTS algebraic expressions.

Built upon new data organization and access characteristics, MEMS-based storage devices have come under consideration as an alternative to disks for large data-intensive applications. While not already in commercial production, MEMS-based storage devices have outperformed disks in device-level simulations. Processor-embedded distributed disks improved performance of workloads by offloading application-level processing to the storage. To exploit the potential benefits offered by these emerging storage technologies and offloading models, we propose a processor-embedded distributed MEMS-based storage architecture, and evaluate the proposed architecture with representative database and data mining workloads. Our results show that MEMS-based storage improved the overall performance of these workloads over disk-based systems, and transformed the characteristics of several workloads, impacting the design points for future storage architectures.

Summary form only given. A fast algorithm for solving a large system with an essentially Toeplitz five-band coefficient matrix is presented. The first two and last two rows are influenced by boundary conditions. The five band core of this matrix is factored as the product of tridiagonal matrices for the purpose of obtaining a solution of a linear system more efficiently. An error term for the approximate solution is presented following the work by Yan and Chung. An algorithm is developed for solving the two systems and is tested using two multiprocessor machines with different architectures.

Summary form only given. This article addresses the impact of capability description on query planning in heterogeneous data integration system. Query planning covers the selection of data sources related to the query and the determination of subgoals' execution orders. In the context of capability description, we propose a framework for data sources description towards generating good feasible query plans. Our approach uses information such as the semantic correspondences between local schemas and mediated schemas and the query capability descriptions to investigate factors that provide a good foundation for query planning. Finally, the proposed approach is compared with the other capability description approaches described in the literature. The obtained results demonstrate that our approach will allow data sources to advertise their capabilities in a flexible way and help to efficiently query planning.
