In this paper, we present an in-depth analysis of the memory system performance of the DSS commercial workloads on two state-of-the-art multiprocessors: the SGI Origin 2000 and the HP V-Class. Our results show that a single query process takes almost the same amount of cycles in both machines. However; when multiple query processes run simultaneously on the system, the execution time tends to increase more in SGI Origin 2000 than in HP V-Class due to the more expensive communication overhead in SGI Origin 2000. We also show how the rate at which the number of data cache misses, context switches and the overall execution time increases when more query processes run simultaneously.

The real-time scheduling advisor (RTSA) is an entirely user-level system that an application running on a typical shared, unreserved distributed computing environment can turn to for advice on how to schedule its compute-bound soft real-time tasks. Given a list of hosts, a description of the CPU demands of the task, the deadline, and a confidence level, the RTSA will recommend one of the hosts and predict, as a confidence interval, the running time of the task on that host. The RTSA is based on a scalable and extensible shared resource prediction system based on statistical time series analysis. The author first describes how the RTSA builds on this underlying system to provide its service, and then he evaluates its performance using a randomized methodology based on real background workloads, determining the effect of different factors. He also compares it with a random approach and a measurement-based approach.

A consequence of the increasing popularity of Beowulf clusters has been their increasing size (in number of nodes). Yet, the hard drives available on these nodes are only used for the system and temporary files, thus wasting a lot of space (several TiB on large clusters!). The systems that might help recycling this otherwise-unused space are few and far between. This paper presents a NFS server that aims at using the unused disk space spread over the cluster nodes and at offering performance and scalability improvements (compared to the plain NFS servers). The architecture of our solution uses a metaserver and I/O daemons. The client only sees plain NFS, thanks to NFS over UDP spoofing techniques. A first implementation and early performances are shown for this approach.

In this paper we focus on the temporary return of data values that are incorrect for given transactional semantics and could have catastrophic effects similar to those in parallel and discrete event simulation. In many applications using on-line transaction processing (OLTP) environments, for instance, it is best to delay the response to a transaction's read request until it is either known or unlikely that a write message from an older update transaction will not make the response incorrect. Examples of such applications are those where aberrant behavior is too costly, and those in which precommitted data are visible to some reactive entity. In light of the avoidance of risk in this approach, we propose a risk-free multiversion temporally correct (RFMVTC) concurrency control algorithm. We discuss the algorithm, its implementation and report on the performance results of simulation models using a cluster of workstations.

This paper investigates the design of parallel algorithmic strategies that address the efficient use of both, memory hierarchies within each processor and a multilevel clustered structure of the interconnection between processors. In the past, these phenomena have usually been addressed separately. This paper is a first step towards parallel algorithmic strategies which address both at the same time. As a case study, we investigate the distribution sweeping method which has been very effective for the design of external memory algorithms for computational geometry problems. We present a novel method for parallel distribution sweeping on a clustered parallel machine with hierarchical local memories, showing that it yields optimal computation, communication and memory access times for a number of geometry problems.

This paper presents a network with earliest deadline first (EDF) scheduling on a per slot basis. The network is called CCR-EDF (Control Channel based Ring network with EDF scheduling). The topology is a pipelined unidirectional fibre-ribbon ring that supports several simultaneous transmissions in non-overlapping segments and with dedicated fibres for clock and arbitration. In each slot the node that has highest priority generates the clock. The clock hand over strategy together with the scheduling feature gives the network the functionality for earliest deadline scheduling of periodic messages belonging to logical real-time connections. Logical realtime connections may be added and removed during runtime, through admission control. Guaranteed realtime communication service is supported to the user. Other services include best effort traffic and special services for parallel and distributed processing such as barrier synchronisation and global reduction.

This paper presents preliminary efforts to develop compilation and execution environments that achieve performance portability of multilevel parallelization on hierarchical architectures. Using the NAS parallel benchmarks, we first illustrate the lack of portable performance on stateof- the-art scalable parallel systems despite the use of two portable programming models, MPI and OpenMP. Then we present a dynamic compilation and execution framework that provides the desired portability through the use of program slices. These slices are used to select the optimal program decomposition on each architecture. Currently, our framework uses a simple incremental algorithm, which effectively identifies single or multi-level program decompositions that maximize performance. This algorithm can be used as a rule of thumb for automatic multilevel parallelization. The effectiveness of the approach is demonstrated on the NAS benchmarks running on two architectural platforms.

The external selection problem is to select the record with the K-th smallest key from the given N records that are distributed and stored evenly on the D disks for the parallel machine with D processors. Each processor has its own primary memory of size M records and one disk, where N/D>M. The processors are connected with a /spl radic/D /spl times/ /spl radic/D mesh architecture. Based on a two-stage approach, this paper presents an efficient parallel external selection algorithm for the distributed-memory parallel systems. first, all the processors execute local external sorting in parallel, each processor sorts the N/D records on its own disk. Next, they execute parallel external selection from the D sorted sub-files on the D disks. This algorithm is asymptotically optimal and has a small constant factor of time complexity.

New global trends in communications technology and liberalization are forcing dramatic changes in our lives. Applications tend to be lightweight and mobile, resulting in greater convenience. We present a new architecture to advance the traditional authoring system towards these trends. In the proposed architecture, the authoring system is capable of editing media content distributed in the networks. It forms a new model of authoring, i.e., the distributed authoring model. The distributed authoring model is described and compared with the traditional authoring model. We introduce quality-on-demand streaming in the architecture for the purpose of distributed authoring. Furthermore, we address the problems of applying multiple source streaming and quality adaptation in the architecture and show our design for resolving these problems. An implementation conforming to this architecture is also described.

In the past, developers of parallel science and engineering applications have been reluctant to embrace objectoriented languages due to the high abstraction penalties they incur at runtime. However, recent advances in design techniques and compiler technology have allowed C++ to emerge as a practical choice for these applications. Due to the lag in acceptance of these languages for parallel computing, there has also been a lag in commercial tool support for this application domain. This paper presents extensions made to the Vampir/GuideView (VGV) tool set to support performance analysis of object-oriented mixed MPI/OpenMP parallel applications. first, a performance data abstraction for object-oriented mixed MPI/OpenMP parallel applications is proposed. Next, the implementation of this abstraction within the VGV tool set is presented. Finally, our tool set is demonstrated by applying it to two parallel applications. VGV is the first commercial tool to provide performance analysis facilities for these types of applications.
