NASA's Information Power Grid (IPG) is an infrastructure designed to harness the power of geographically distributed computers, databases and human expertise, in order to solve large-scale realistic computational problems. This type of a metacomputing environment is necessary to present a unified virtual machine to application developers that hides the intricacies of a highly heterogeneous environment and yet maintains adequate security. In this paper, we present a novel partitioning scheme, called MinEX, that dynamically balances processor workloads while minimizing data movement and runtime communication, for applications that are executed in a parallel distributed fashion on the IPG. Experimental results show that MinEX is an effective load balancer in a distributed IPG environment.

In this paper, we present two efficient parallel algorithms for computing a non-equijoin, range-join, of two relations an N-dimensional mesh-connected computers. The proposed algorithms uses the data-shifting approach to effectively permute every sorted subset of relation S to each processor in turn recursively in dimensions from low to high, where it is joined with the local subset of relation R.

Whereas much of the previous work on data mining has focused on mining data in relational databases, we discuss mining objects. Object models are very popular for representing multimedia data, and therefore we need to mine object databases to extract useful information from the large quantities of multimedia data. We first describe the motivation for multimedia data mining with examples and then discuss object mining with focus on text, image, video and audio mining. We also address the need for real time data mining for multimedia applications.

It is very common that modern large-scale scientific applications employ multiple compute and storage resources in a heterogeneously distributed environment. Working effectively and efficiently in such an environment is one of the major concerns for designing meta-data management systems. The authors present an integrated graphical user interface (GUI) that makes the entire environment virtually an easy-to-use control platform for managing complex programs and their large datasets. To hide the I/O latency when the the user carries out interactive visualization, aggressive prefetching and caching techniques are employed in our GUI. The performance numbers show that the design of our Java GUI has achieved the goals of both high performance and ease-of-use.

The first step in homology analysis is usually the comparison of sequences by similarity search. The explosive growth of genomic databases makes it increasingly important to develop more rapid approaches to the comparison of large sequence databases while using the most sensitive methods available. This paper explores the consequences of this trade-off, comparing the results produced by BLAST and Smith-Waterman on genoinic- scale sequence searches. Stich comparisons are now possible thanks to the development of novel distributed computing platforms. This study uses the Parabon Frontier/sup TM/ Internet computing platform, which enables the effective use of the vast supply of idle computer cycles on the Internet for high-performance computing. We have ported both Smith-Waterman and BLAST to the Frontier platform, enabling the efficient use of these algorithms on large sequence databases. In addition, we present a novel visualization tool along with quantitative metrics for comparing the results of alternative sequence alignment algorithms. Our results compare the sensitivity of Smith-Waterman and BLAST for identifying homologies on proteome databases.

Given an N/spl times/N matrix A, the matrix powers problem is to calculate the first N powers of A, i.e., A, A/sup 2/A/sup 3/,..., A/sup N/. We consider distributed memory systems (DMS) with p processors that can support one-to-one communications in O(T(p)) time. Assume that the time complexity of the best known sequential algorithm for matrix multiplication is O(N/sup /spl alpha//), where /spl alpha/<2.3755. Let p be arbitrarily chosen in the range 1/spl les/p/spl les/N/sup /spl alpha/+1//log N. We show that the two problems can be solved on a p-processor DMS in T/sub chain/(N,p)=O(N/sup /spl alpha/+1//p+T(p)(N/sup 2(1+1//spl alpha/)//p/sup 2// /sup /spl alpha//(log p/N)/sup 1-2//spl alpha//+log(p log N/N/sup /spl alpha//) log N)) and T/sub power/(N,p)=0(N/sup /spl alpha/+1//p+T(p)(N/sup 2(1+1//spl alpha/)//p/sup 2// /sup /spl alpha//(log p/log N)/sup 1-2//spl alpha//+(log N)/sup 2/)) times, respectively. We also give instantiation of the above results in distributed memory parallel computers and DMS with hypercubic networks, and show that our parallel algorithms are either fully scalable or highly scalable.

This paper describes a new and simple random walk mobility model that simplifies the two-dimensional Markov chain based on the properties of symmetry and lumped process. Compared to various other approaches, the proposed approach significantly reduces the complexity of the model by reducing the computing states. Based on this model, the location update rate and dwell time can be easily derived. The regular Markov chain and the property of combining states are applied to derive the number of location updates and a modified absorbing Markov chain property can be used to derive the dwell time. Analytical performance results of the model were validated by simulation. Results show the relative error between analytical and simulation performances are within 1%. This is the first model of its kind that can be used for studying area-crossing rates. This model can be adapted to most mobility management studies for architectures.

Many computes vision applications are computationally challenging especially when they need to meet real-time constraints. A major problem with special purpose systems is that they require the developers of image-processing applications to be aware of the low-level hardware design, making the task cumbersome. To avoid inflexible and expensive hardware designs, another possible alternative is a network of workstations (NOW) platform put together with off-the-shelf workstations and networking hardware. Still, one had to manually schedule an algorithm to the available processors of the NOW to make efficient use of the resources. However, this approach is time consuming and impractical for a vision system that must perform a variety of different algorithms, with new algorithms being constantly developed. Improved support for program development is absolutely necessary before the full benefits of parallel architectures can be realized for vision applications. Towards this goal, an automatic compile-time scheduler has been developed to schedule input tasks of vision applications with precedence constraints onto available processors. The scheduler exploits both spatial (parallelism) and temporal (pipelining) concurrency to make the best use of machine resources. Two important scheduling problems are addressed. first, given a task graph and a desired throughput, a schedule is constructed to achieve the desired throughput with the minimum number of processors. Second, given a task graph and a finite set of available resources, a schedule is constructed such that the throughput is maximized while meeting the resource constraints. Results from simulations show that the scheduler and proposed optimization techniques effectively tackle these problems by maximizing the processor utilization. A code generator has been developed to generate parallel programs automatically. The execution profiles of the resulting parallel programs demonstrate the feasibility of the scheduler. The to
