Dynamic load balancing on hypercube multiprocessors is considered with emphasis on quantized loads. Quantized loads are divisible only in a fixed size. first, we show that a direct application of the well-known Dimension Exchange Method (DEM) to quantized loads may result in difference in assigned loads to processors as large as log N units after balancing for a hypercube of size N. Then we propose a new method which reduces the maximum difference by half. The claim is proved both by analysis of possible cases incrementing the difference on each phase of balancing and by enumerating all possible combination of load for hypercubes of limited sizes using a computer. To estimate the accumulated effect of balancing instances under real-world parallel processing environment, a simulation for hypercube multiprocessors using SLAM II tool is performed. The result shows about 30% improvement in speedup which results from reduced processing time, which in turn results from reduced nonuniformity.

PM-PVM: A portable multithreaded PVM

PM-PVM is a portable implementation of PVM designed to work on SMP architectures supporting multithreading. PM-PVM portability is achieved through the implementation of the PVM functionality on top of a reduced set of parallel programming primitives. Within PM-PVM, PVM tasks are mapped onto threads and the message passing functions are implemented using shared memory. Three implementation approaches of the PVM message passing functions have been adopted. In the first one, a single message copy in memory is shared by all destination tasks. The second one replicates the message for every destination task but requires less synchronization. Finally, the third approach uses a combination of features from the two previous ones. Experimental results comparing the performance of PM-PVM and PVM applications running on a 4-processor Sparcstation 20 under Solaris 2.5 show that PM-PVM can produce execution times up to 54% smaller than PVM.

parallel computing is becoming increasing central and mainstream, driven both by the widespread availability of commodity SMP and high-performance cluster platforms, as well as the growing use of parallelism in general-purpose applications such as image recognition, virtual reality, and media processing. In addition to performance requirements, the latter computations impose soft real-time constraints, necessitating efficient, predictable parallel resource management. In this paper, we propose a novel approach for increasing parallel system utilization while meeting application soft real-time deadlines. Our approach exploits the application tunability found in several general-purpose computations. Tunability refers to an application's ability to trade off resource requirements over time, while maintaining a desired level of output quality. We first describe language extensions to support tunability in the Calypso system, then characterize the performance benefits of tunability, using a synthetic task system to systematically identify its benefits. Our results show that application tunability is convenient to express and can significantly improve parallel system utilization for computations with predictability requirements.

Predictive control was first developed to control linear time invariant plants described by ARIMAX models. The extension of this control strategy to the case when the behavior of the plant is nonlinear and modeled by a Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy model is considered. This kind of nonlinear model is locally linear and the GPC technique can be extended as a parallel distributed controller.

The paper proposes a Java-based mobile agent infrastructure, TRAVELER, to support wide area parallel applications. Unlike other meta-computing systems, TRAVELER allows users to dispatch their compute-intensive jobs as mobile agents via a resource broker. The broker forms a parallel virtual machine atop servers to execute the agents. Since the agents can be programmed to satisfy their goals, even if they move and lose contact with their creators, they can survive intermittent or unreliable network connection. During their lifetime, the agents can also move themselves autonomously from one machine to another for load balancing, enhancing data locality, and tolerating faults. TRAVELER relies on an integrated distributed shared array runtime system in support of agent communications on clusters of servers. We demonstrated the feasibility of the TRAVELER in LU factorization problems.

The PDSE'99 symposium, now in its fourth successive year, is a continuation of the inaugural PDSE'96 workshop held in conjunction with ICSE-18 in Berlin. This was followed by ICSE events in Boston, 1997 and in Kyoto, 1998. The PDSE symposiums attract up to 50 delegates from a wide range of backgrounds from both industry and academia from around the world. The papers are always published internationally, more recently as IEEE proceedings, and are refereed by a minimum of three independent experts in the field. The talks include keynote speakers with an emphasis on first hand experience of industrial applications and large-scale projects.

The Delaunay/sup MM/ system supports an interactive, customizable interface for querying multimedia distributed databases, such as digital libraries. Through this interface, users select virtual document styles that cater the display of query results to their needs, while also offering transparent preand post-query refinement and querying. Delaunay/sup MM/'s virtual documents preserve context by maintaining a single customizable interface for result viewing. The advanced transparent query features rely on mediation to provide adept access to information. In this paper, we present the framework for Delaunay/sup MM/, its architecture, the user interface, and results of the first usability study.

We deal with the study of the actual convenience of using the agent programming paradigm for accessing distributed service. We point out the benefits of such a communication paradigm by providing an analytical study of its basic features in comparison with the client-server approach and remote evaluation. The results that we have obtained show how agents must not always be considered the only solution to any communication issue, since in several cases their use might even reveal a drawback. We present several models of non-Markovian Petri nets, which have been solved through the WebSPN tool, and we provide a close comparison between the agent techniques (client-server and remote evaluation). We also focus our attention on providing some practical remarks which can help the developer during the design, in order to select the communication paradigm which best suits the features of the application that has to be developed.
