The confluence of computers, communications, and databases is quickly creating a global virtual database where many applications require real time access to both temporally accurate and multimedia data. This is particularly true in military and intelligence applications, but these required features are needed in many commercial applications as well. We are developing a distributed database, called BeeHive, which could offer features along different types of requirements: real time, fault tolerance, security, and quality of service for audio and video. Support of these features and potential trade offs between them could provide a significant improvement in performance and functionality over current distributed database and object management systems. We present a high level design for BeeHive architecture and sketch the design of the BeeHive Object Model (BOM) which extends object oriented data models by incorporating time and other features into objects.

This paper presents the affected set priority ceiling protocols (ASPCP) for concurrency control in real-time object-oriented systems. These protocols are based on a combination of semantic locking and priority ceiling techniques. This paper shows that the ASPCP protocols provide higher potential concurrency for object-oriented systems than existing priority ceiling protocols, while still bounding priority inversion and preventing deadlock.

Sofware distributed-shared-memory (DSM) systems provide a desirable target for parallelizing compilers due to their flexibility. However, studies show synchronization and load imbalance are significant sources of overhead. The authors investigate the impact of compilation techniques for eliminating synchronization overhead in software DSMs, developing new algorithms to handle situations found in practice. They evaluate the contributions of synchronization elimination algorithms based on 1) dependence analysis, 2) communication analysis, 3) exploiting coherence protocols in software DSMs, and 4) aggressive expansion of parallel SPMD regions. They also found suppressing expensive parallelism to be useful for one application. Experiments indicate these techniques eliminate almost all parallel task invocations, and reduce the number of barriers executed by 66% on average. On a 16 processor IBM SP-2, speedups are improved on average by 35%, and are tripled for some applications.

We present a novel scheme for the solution of linear differential equation systems on parallel computers. The Implicit Pipeline (ImP) method uses an implicit time-integration scheme coupled with an iterative linear solver to solve the resulting differential algebraic system. The ImP method then allows for two independent mechanisms for parallelism: pipelining of the solution of several timesteps simultaneously and pipelining of the successive linear iterations in the solution of each individual time-step. Since pipelining allows for a highly structured communication pattern, it is possible to achieve good parallel performance on large processor sets. Performance results from a Cray T3E are given.

This paper presents the RTExpress/sup TM/ environment which is a software tool that assists a user in rapidly developing real-time embedded systems. RTExpress(TM) is a compiler and runtime environment that provides the capability for MATLAB/sup R/ script files to be directly compiled and then executed on parallel high performance computers (HPC). RTExpress/sup TM/ provides the capability to employ the power of an HPC on standard MATLAB/sup R/ without having to recode the MATLAB/sup R/ in the HPC target language. Its features include support for real-time data and machine performance visualization, multiple parallelization paradigms, multiple homogeneous parallel architectures, utilization of machine specific optimized vector libraries and native compilers, and the ability to change real-time algorithm parameters on-the-fly.

The loop-level process control (LLPC) policy (Yue and Lilja, 1997) dynamically adjusts the number of threads an application is allowed to execute based on the application's available parallelism and the overall system load. This study demonstrates the feasibility of incorporating the LLPC strategy into an existing commercial operating system and parallelizing compiler and provides further evidence of the performance improvement that is possible using this dynamic allocation strategy. In this implementation, applications are automatically parallelized and enhanced with the appropriate LLPC hooks so that each application interacts with the modified version of the Solaris operating system. The parallelism of the applications is then dynamically adjusted automatically when they are executed in a multiprogrammed environment so that all applications obtain a fair share of the total processing resources.

Passing messages through shared memory plays an important role in symmetric multiprocessors and on Clumps. The management of concurrent access to message queues is an important aspect of design for shared memory message passing systems. Using both microbenchmarks and applications, the paper compares the performance of concurrent access algorithms for passing active messages on a Sun Enterprise 5000 server. The paper presents a new lock free algorithm that provides many of the advantages of non blocking algorithms while avoiding the overhead of true non blocking behavior. The lock free algorithm couples synchronization tightly to the data structure and demonstrates application performance superior to all others studied. The success of this algorithm implies that other practical problems might also benefit from a reexamination of the non blocking literature.

This paper describes PI/OT, a template-based parallel I/O system. In PI/OT, I/O streams have annotations associated with them that are external to the source code. These annotations specify an I/O behavior (template) and some modifiers (attributes). This paper shows how PI/OT attributes can be used to handle irregular data structures, and how the templates can be hierarchically composed to support complex I/O access patterns. PI/OT's separation of I/O specifications from the source code allows users to create these parallel I/O behaviors quickly and correctly. We demonstrate these capabilities by describing how PI/OT can be used to implement a biochemistry application and by discussing the performance results.

Using a directed acyclic graph (dag) model of algorithms, we solve a problem related to precedence-constrained multiprocessor schedules for array computations. Given a sequence of dags and linear schedules parametrized by n, compute a lower bound on the number of processors required by the schedule as a function of n. In our formulation, the number of tasks that are scheduled for execution during any fixed time step is the number of non-negative integer solutions d/sub n/ to a set of parametric linear Diophantine equations. We illustrate an algorithm based on generating functions for constructing a formula for these numbers d/sub n/. The algorithm has been implemented as a Mathematica program. An example run and the symbolic formula for processor lower bounds automatically produced by the algorithm for Gaussian elimination is presented.

The large amount of data collected today is quickly overwhelming researchers' abilities to interpret the data and discover interesting patterns. Knowledge discovery and data mining approaches hold the potential to automate the interpretation process, but these approaches frequently utilize computationally expensive algorithms. In particular, scientific discovery systems focus on the utilization of richer data representation, sometimes without regard for scalability. This research outlines a general approach for scaling KDD systems using parallel and distributed resources and applies the suggested strategies to the SUBDUE knowledge discovery system. SUBDUE has been used to discover interesting and repetitive concepts in graph-based databases from a variety of domains, but requires a substantial amount of processing time. Experiments that demonstrate that scalability of parallel versions of the SUBDUE system are performed using CAD circuit databases and artificially-generated databases, and potential achievements and obstacles are discussed.
