Database systems running on a cluster of machines, i.e. rack-scale databases, are a common architecture for many large databases and data appliances. As the data movement across machines is often a significant bottleneck, these systems typically use a low-latency, high-throughput network such as InfiniBand. To achieve the necessary performance, parallel join algorithms must take advantage of the primitives provided by the network to speed up data transfer. In this paper we focus on implementing parallel in-memory joins using Remote Direct Memory Access (RDMA), a communication mechanism to transfer data directly into the memory of a remote machine. The results of this paper are, to our knowledge, the first detailed analysis of parallel hash joins using RDMA. TO capture their behavior independently of the network characteristics, we develop an analytical model and test our implementation on two different types of networks. The experimental results show that the model is accurate and the resulting distributed join exhibits good performance.

A dominant cost for query evaluation in modern massively distributed systems is the number of communication rounds. For this reason, there is a growing interest in single-round multiway join algorithms where data is first reshuffled over many servers and then evaluated in a parallel but communication-free way. The reshuffling itself is specified as a distribution policy. We introduce a correctness condition, called parallel-correctness, for the evaluation of queries w.r.t. a distribution policy. We study the complexity of parallel-correctness for conjunctive queries as well as transferability of parallel-correctness between queries. We also investigate the complexity of transferability for certain families of distribution policies, including, for instance, the Hypercube distribution.

This paper introduces the characteristics and the new technologies applied in Fengyun-3 Series Meteorological Satellite Data Archiving and Service System. The system integrates several high-performance servers, high availability disk array, large-scale automated tape library as well as operation system, database, storage software and application software, all of which constitutes archive and service application clusters. The application of configured dynamic load container technology and multi-server processing load balancing and parallel computing technology makes the cluster a highly scalable, available, efficient operational system to realize all levels of satellite data archiving, customization, retrieval, dynamic information release, operation monitoring, management, and other functions. Internet-based full dataset sharing, distributed file system, spatiotemporal integration of database storage, WebGIS global satellite image distribution, visual processing and display technology are adopted in the system to improve data sharing and service. Completion of the system meets the needs of operational meteorological satellite, achieving daily 4 TB data storing and daily 1 TB data download service. The system running in NSMC/CMA is the first one to provide internet-based full archive dataset (online, nearline and offline) sharing service in the area of Chinese civil remote sensing satellite data services.

We report on our development of a new course: Introduction to Performance Measurement, Modeling and Analysis (IPMMA). The first offering was in Fall 2014, with a second offering in Winter 2015 in finals week at this writing. The course focuses on the fundamentals of measuring, analyzing, and modeling computer performance. As we cover the basics we will move through a set of case studies, allowing us to apply the techniques to increasingly complex problems. Case studies used in Fall 2014 include: multithreaded code;web servers;MPI code;virtualized servers;and Map/Reduce - Hadoop. In Winter 2015 we added a case study for single server queue simulation. These case studies include hands-on programming exercises both during class time and as take-home exercises. We use a variety of performance tools through the course to learn the state of the art for performance techniques and practices. We have successfully included a number of PDC topics into this course, with relatively small background needed for the students to succeed in hands-on exercises. However, we have found a total lack of textbook support for the inclusion of PDC topics into an introductory performance course.

In this paper, we present a new parallel method named SDFEM that enables frequent pattern mining (FPM) on cluster with multiple multi-core compute nodes to provide high performance. SDFEM is distinguished from previous parallel FPM works due to incorporating three advanced features to provide high mining performance for large-scale data analytic applications. first, SDFEM combines both shared memory and distributed memory computational models to leverage benefits of shared memory within a node in cluster. Second, it employs a multi-strategy load balancing approach to address the most challenging issue of parallel FPM to balance the mining workload among all cores of the cluster. Finally, its self-adaptive mining solution with the capability of dynamically adjusting to the characteristics of the database to perform efficiently on different data types either sparse or dense. For performance evaluation, we implement SDFEM using a hybrid model of OpenMP and MPI in which OpenMP is for the shared memory model and MPI is for message passing. SDFEM has been tested on a cluster of multiple 12-core shared memory compute nodes. Our experimental results on real databases show that performance of SDFEM is up to 329.5% faster than the parallel FPM approach that uses only distributed memory model with message passing (i.e. using pure MPI). In addition, SDFEM can achieve up to 45.4 - 64.8 speedup on 120 cores (i.e. 10 compute nodes and 12 cores per node). © 2015 Society for Modeling & Simulation international (SCS).

Data replication is a common technique used for fault-tolerance in reliable distributed systems. In geo-replicated systems and the cloud, it additionally provides low latency. Recently, causal consistency in such systems has received much attention. However, all existing works assume the data is fully replicated. This greatly simplifies the design of the algorithms to implement causal consistency. In this paper, we propose that it can be advantageous to have partial replication of data, and we propose two algorithms for achieving causal consistency in such systems where the data is only partially replicated. This is the first work that explores causal consistency for partially replicated geo-replicated systems. We also give a special case algorithm for causal consistency in the full-replication case.

Social networks and business analytics typically need to process vast amounts of data that are often modeled as graphs. The scale of the data that such applications have to handle requires large-scale distributed computing systems, together with scalable parallel algorithms, to efficiently process the graphs. Representative of the graph-based analytics class of applications is the Graph 500 benchmark (Murphy, ***., 2010), which is designed to assess the performance of supercomputing systems by solving the Breadth-first Search (BFS) graph traversal problem. In this work, we analyze the network data motion of a Graph 500 MPI version of the graph traversal problem, using a large-scale high-performance computing system, i.e., the MareNostrum III supercomputer (http://***/marenostrum-support-services/mn3). We focus our analysis on the node-to-node communication and show that the application runtime is communication-bound, the communication making up as much as 80 % of the execution time of each BFS iteration. We also show that the dominating communication pattern is an overall all-to-all exchange (every process communicates to every other process and roughly the same amount of data is exchanged between any two processes), thus providing preliminary guidance for future application or network design optimization efforts.
