We report the results of an investigation aiming at experimenting the use of Generalized Stochastic Petri Nets (GSPN), a formal method which allows to model a concurrent application with an explicit representation of timing constraints, and to evaluate its performance over a target parallel architecture. We focus on the definition and use of a set of indices suitable to characterise an application in terms of its performance and to support its mapping over a parallel architecture, guided by the training over a case study taken from the ENEL R&D activity in real time plant automation. The effort spent to extend and to bring a relatively consolidated theory (GSPN) near to the industrial user needs, may be seen as the first original contribution of the paper.

We discuss a novel technique for improving the dependability of parallel programs executing on a MIMD shared memory architecture. The idea is to empower certain tasks of each application program to carry out failure detection, and to reschedule the execution of those tasks which are considered to have failed. The technique we propose is based on a task graph representation of the parallel program, in which communications between tasks have been voluntarily isolated to the end of each task which is being considered. We propose and evaluate several algorithms which can detect failures and restart failed tasks. A discrete-event simulator is used to evaluate the performance under the effect of failures, with the use of our detection and restart algorithms, of a specific parallel application: the fast Fourier transform.< >

Several processor allocation schemes are proposed in the literature for mesh connected parallel computers. All these schemes aim at improving the system performance by reducing internal fragmentation or by enhancing the submesh recognition ability. In this paper, we propose an approach of system partitioning to reduce external fragmentation and thereby improve the system performance. The target systems considered here are two-dimensional meshes where the side lengths are powers of two. Processors are allocated to a partitioned mesh based on their submesh size requirements. The proposed scheme can be implemented in conjuaction with any of the existing schemes and thereby can also exploit the advantages offered by those schemes. The performance measurements are done through simulation experiments. Completion time for a fixed number of jobs, internal and external fragmentation, and system utilazation are obtained. It is observed that, in most cases, the proposed scheme demonstrates better performance. Time complexity of the proposed scheme is less by a factor of n compared to the corresponding allocation scheme without partitioning, where n=log/sub 2.

We describe MOSS, a small language of mobile distributed objects and system-wide references, uncommitted to any distributed simulation protocol, but which can be executed as a distributed conservative simulation with automatic deduction of lookahead. We show how the MOSS programmer can control the dynamic distribution and locality of simulation objects by simple means which provide natural modelling functions. Preliminary results show how programmed locality can reduce communication costs in simulation.

This paper presents the results of an experimental study to evaluate the effectiveness of parallel simulation in reducing the execution time of gate-level models of VLSI circuits. Specific contributions of this paper include (i) the design of a gate-level parallel simulator that can be executed, without any changes on both distributed memory and shared memory parallel architectures, (ii) demonstrated speedups with both conservative and optimistic simulation protocols (almost all previous studies on circuit simulation have failed to extract speedups with conservative protocols); in particular we showed that a speedup of about 3 was obtained on 8 processors of Sparc1000 for conservative algorithms and about 2 for optimistic algorithms for circuits in the ISCAS85 benchmark suite; and (iii) performance comparison between shared memory and distributed memory implementations of the simulator.

Many simulations in the natural sciences and engineering require the numerical solution of nonlinear differential equations. For this class of numerical methods, we propose an appropriate parallel computation model on distributed memory machines that supports the prediction of execution times. As a case study, we investigate the parallel implementation of the diagonal-implicitly iterated Runge-Kutta method, a solution method for stiff systems of ordinary differential equations. An implementation on the Intel iPSC/860 confirms the accuracy of the prediction model.

Coloured Petri nets are a powerful formalism for the description of complex, asynchronous distributed systems. They can express in a very concise way the behaviour of very large system especially in case these systems are composed of many replications of a few basic components that individually behave in a similar way. The simulation of such models is however difficult to perform in a computationally efficient way. For the specific class of well formed stochastic nets (SWN) we present a set of techniques that allow a very efficient implementation of the event-driven simulation approach. Two approaches are followed to improve simulation efficiency: first, reduction of the amount of work needed to schedule or preempt the occurrence of a transition as a consequence of a marking change, taking into account the restrictions on colour functions for the WN formalism; second, reduction of the average length of the event list in the case of symmetric models where the so called symbolic simulation technique applies. The approach is validated by performance measurements on several large SWN models taken from the literature.

Checkpointing in a time warp synchronized parallel simulator is a necessary and potentially expensive operation. In the simple case, a time warp simulator checkpoints every /spl chi/ events, for some fired value /spl chi/. For larger values of /spl chi/, the simulator requires less overhead for saving the state, but incurs an increased latency during rollback. Thus, the problem is to balance the time to save states against the time to coast forward upon rollback. Unfortunately, a static determination of an optimal value for /spl chi/ is very difficult and can vary widely, even between closely related instances of a time warp simulator. Furthermore, the optimal checkpoint interval may actually vary over the lifetime of the simulation. To address these problems, several investigators have proposed dynamically adjusting the checkpoint interval /spl chi/ as the simulation progresses. This paper analyzes three previous techniques for dynamically sizing checkpoint intervals and presents a new, heuristic algorithm for this purpose. All four techniques are implemented in a common application domain (digital system simulation from VHDL descriptions) and a direct comparison between the algorithms is performed. The results show a significant difference in the performance of the implemented algorithms. However, in virtually all cases, the dynamic algorithms performed near or better than the best static value. Furthermore, the best algorithms performed as much as 12% better than the best static value.< >

A Motif based graphical tool XTracker is described. XTracker can show Gannt-like charts of the activities on each node or it can show the event messages as traffic between simulation objects. XTracker can take its data from sequential simulation runs and simulate a parallel execution under a number of simulation methods. XTracker can act as a performance modeling tool.

Research into DBMS (Database Management System) parallelism has been carried out to address the performance problems experienced in areas such as Decision Support. distributed shared memory can alleviate the porting of commercial DBMSs to parallel platforms. However, this restricts the scaleability and performance achievable using shared nothing approaches. Consequently we propose the use of dynamic data migration techniques to support such parallel DBMSs. Using simulation techniques, we examine the effects which parameters such as migration threshold, migration block size and degree of data sharing have on file system performance. We present simulation results, providing useful insight into file system design.< >
