Ethernet is the most widely implemented low-level networking technology used today, with Gigabit Ethernet seen as the emerging standard implementation. The backbones of many large scale networks (e.g., data centers, metro-area deployments) are increasingly made up of Gigabit Ethernet as the underlying technology, and Ethernet is seeing increasing use in dynamic and failure-prone settings (e.g., wireless backhaul, developing regions) with high rates of churn. Correspondingly, when using simulation to study such networks and applications that run on them, the switching makes up a significant fraction of the model, and can make up a significant amount of the simulation activity. This paper describes a unique testbed that gathers highly accurate measurements of loss and latency through a switch, experiments that reveal the behavior of three commercial switches, and then proposes simulation models that explain the observed data. The models vary in their computational complexity and in their accuracy with respect to frame loss patterns, and latency through the switch. In particular, the simplest model predicts a frame's loss and latency immediately at the time of its arrival, which keeps the computational cost close to one event per frame per switch, provides excellent temporal separation between switches (useful for parallel simulation), while providing excellent accuracy for loss and adequate accuracy for latency. © 2010 IEEE.

Usually researchers require many experiments to verify how biological systems respond to stimuli. However, the high cost of reagents and facilities as well as the time required to carry out experiments are sometimes the main cause of failure. In this regards, Information Technology offers a valuable help: modeling and simulation are mathematical tools to execute virtual experiments on computing devices. Through synthetic experimentation, researchers can sample the parameters space of a biological system and obtain hundreds of potential results, ready to be reused to design and conduct more targeted wet-lab experiments. A non negligible achievement of this is the enormous saving of resources and time. In this paper, we present a plug-in-based software prototype that combines high performance computing and statistics. Our framework relies on parallel computing to run large numbers of synthetic experiments. Multivariate analysis is then used to interpret and validate results. The software is tested on two well-known oscillatory models: Predator-Prey (Lotka-Volterra) and Repressilator. © 2010 IEEE.

The current development towards multiple processor cores in personal computers is making distribution and parallelization of simulation software increasingly important. The possible speedups from parallelism are however often limited with the current centralized solver algorithms, which are commonly used in today's simulation environments. An alternative method investigated in this work utilizes distributed solver algorithms using the transmission line modeling (TLM) method. Creation of models using TLM elements to separate model components makes them very suitable for computation in parallel because larger models can be partitioned into smaller independent submodels. The computation time can also be decreased by using small numerical solver step sizes only on those few submodels that need this for numerical stability. This is especially relevant for large and demanding models. In this paper we present work in how to combine TLM and solver inlining techniques in the Modelica equation-based language, giving the potential for efficient distributed simulation of model components over several processors.

The PlanetLab testbed was originally built to develop new technologies for distributed storage, network mapping, peer-to-peer systems, distributed hash tables and query processing in a live-traffic environment. This allowed researchers to construct their own overlay network topologies on top of IP without any need for direct Layer2 access. While this structure is easy to use for many purposes, it does not lend itself directly to experiments with new routing protocols, which need a finer-grained control of where packets flow. Enabling such tests of new protocols and architectures on the PlanetLab infrastructure is the objective of this paper. To this end, a researcher must be able to build Layer2 topologies upon the PlanetLab infrastructure and to have routing and forwarding protocols execute in such a defined infrastructure. Currently this is impossible due to the nature of PlanetLab's network virtualization. This paper describes RiaS, a tool to create customized network topologies inside of PlanetLab slices. This enables researchers to evaluate and test new routing protocols on PlanetLab. We analyze the existing shortcomings of PlanetLab, identify the prerequisites to enable routing experiments, and propose our Routing-in-a-Slice (RiaS) system to overcome this impasse. © 2010 ACM.

BitTorrent communities, both public and private, are immensely popular in the Internet, with tens of millions of users simultaneously active at any given moment. Public and private BitTorrent communities are managed in different ways - for instance, some private communities enforce sharing ratios, have strict rules for content management, have a certain level of community oversight, and maintain a strong sense of exclusiveness. In this paper, we present the results of extensive measurements of more than half a million peers in five communities, ranging from highly popular and well-known public communities to elite private communities that can only be joined by invitation. We observe that the performance experienced by downloaders in the private communities is by far superior to the performance in the public communities, and we observe significant differences in connectability, seeder/leecher ratio, and seeding duration. Based on our results, we conjecture that when effective ratio enforcement mechanisms are in place, BitTorrent's tit-for-tat mechanism is hardly influential anymore. Our multi-community, multi-swarm measurements are significantly broader and more extensive than any earlier measurement study on BitTorrent. © IPTPS *** right reserved.

Real-time simulation of dynamic vehicle system models is essential to facilitate advances in operator and hardware in the loop simulation and virtual prototyping. Real-time virtual reality-based simulation enables users to visualize and perceive the effect of their actions during the simulation. As model complexity is increased to improve the model fidelity, the computational requirements will also increase, thus increasing the challenge to meet real-time constraints. A distributed simulator architecture was developed for off-road vehicle dynamic models and 3D graphics visualization to distribute the overall computational load across multiple computational platforms. This architecture consisted of three major components: a dynamic model simulator, a virtual reality simulator, and an interface to controller and input hardware devices. The dynamic model simulator component was developed using Matlab/Simulink Real Time workshop on a PC and also using Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA), which offered a highly parallel hardware platform. The simulator architecture reduced the computational load to an individual platform and increased the real-time simulation capability with complex off-road vehicle system models and controllers. The architecture was used to develop, simulate and visualize a tractor and towed implement steering dynamics model. The model also included a steering valve subsystem which contained very high frequency hydraulic dynamics and required 10 mu s integration time step for numerical stability. The real-time simulation goal was not achievable for the model with this level of complexity when the PC-based simulator was used. However, the FPGA-based simulator achieved a real-time goal taking only 2 mu s to complete one integration time step.

In wireless sensor networks, collection of raw sensor data at a base station provides the flexibility to perform offline detailed analysis on the data which may not be possible with innetwork data aggregation. However, lossless data collection consumes considerable amount of energy for communication while sensors usually have limited energy. In this paper, we propose a distributed and Energy efficient algorithm for Collection of Raw data in sensor networks called DECOR. DECOR exploits spatial correlation to reduce the communication energy in sensor networks with highly correlated data. In our approach, at each neighborhood, one sensor shares its raw data as a reference with the rest of sensors without any suppression or compression. Other sensors use this reference data to compress their observations by representing them in the forms of mutual differences. In a highly correlated network, transmission of reference data consumes significantly more energy than transmission of compressed data. Thus, we first attempt to minimize the number of reference transmissions. Then, we try to minimize the size of mutual differences. We derive analytical lower bounds for both these phases and based on our theoretical results, we propose a twostep distributed data collection algorithm which reduces the communication energy significantly compared to existing methods. In addition, we modify our algorithm for lossy communication channels and we evaluate its performance through simulation. © 2010 IEEE.

Data prefetching is an effective way to accelerate data access in high-end computing systems and to bridge the increasing performance gap between processor and memory. In recent years, the contextbased data prefetching has received intensive attention because of its general applicability. In this study, we provide a preliminary analysis of the impact of orders on the effectiveness of the context-based prefetching. Motivated by the observations from the analytical results, we propose a new context-based prefetching method named Multi-Order Context-based (MOC) prefetching to adopt multi-order context analysis to increase the context-based prefetching effectiveness. We have carried out simulation testing with the SPECCPU2006 benchmarks via an enhanced CMP$im simulator. The simulation results show that the proposed MOC prefetching method outperforms the existing single-order prefetching and reduces the data-access latency effectively. © 2010 IEEE.
