Running a large-scale distributed simulation may need a large amount of computing resources at geographically different locations. These resources may be from different organizations. The simulation may run for a long period of time and the availability and amount of computing resources available may change during the course of simulation execution. Therefore, coordinating and managing resources for distributed simulation to complete the simulation efficiently and effectively is a critical issue. This paper describes a load management system for HLA-based distributed simulation. The system is constructed on top of a grid computing environment supported by Globus. The overall structure of the system is presented in the paper and how the system saves and restores a federate is also discussed in detail.

This paper considers work in the context of the CRUX project, which aims at the conception of a complete environment for parallel programming, in the development of a postgraduate course in Computer Science of Santa Catarina Federal University. This paper discusses a performance evaluation of several scheduling algorithms of real time systems found in the bibliography, about a simulation model that represents the processing as the communication of this multicomputer. The objective was to quantify the effect of the scheduling algorithm and other factors about some metrics of selected performance, in order to verify the applicability of CRUX in real time systems.

We discuss and compare three different causality inconsistency tracking mechanisms in support of preemptive rollback in optimistic parallel simulation on myrinet clusters. These mechanisms exhibit different communication/processing overhead and also different effectiveness in revealing causality inconsistency of the currently executed simulation event. By the results of an empirical study on a classical simulation benchmark we have found some trade-offs between these mechanisms, pointing out indications of application contexts for which each mechanism is expected to be well tailored.

This paper presents a scalable architecture for supporting large-scale interactive Internet games. In order to support a large number of participants and to divide the workload, the virtual world is divided into partitions. Each partition is then assigned to a server. A client (i.e., a player or a participant) will join a server according to the position of the avatar it controls. Compared to a centralized architecture, this distributed client-server architecture is more scalable. In addition, compared to a fully distributed, peer-to-peer architecture, it also provides a means for detecting cheating in distributed games. Since interactions and accounting information must be forwarded directly to one of the servers for qualification and verification, cheating amongst distributed players of the game will be minimized. To support secured communication for interactions and accounting information as well as to speedup periodic update messages (e.g., position updates), a hybrid communication scheme using both TCP and IP multicast is used between clients and the associated server. The communication among servers is enabled by the Run-Time Infrastructure (RTI) services. The High Level Architecture (HLA) Data Distribution Management (DDM) is employed to limit the amount of communication between the servers. In addition, the Ownership Management (OM) is also employed to implement the need for transferring the avatars between servers. In this paper, the design detail of the architecture will be presented. An experimental interactive Internet game realized using the architecture will be also described in the paper.

Composite events are required for many applications that require obtaining events from various sources, correlating them, and activating appropriate actions. One of the major issues in composite event system is scalability. This paper reports on a research that follows the situation concept of the Amit system, and proposes a parallel execution model for the event composition. The paper describes the model and its difficulties, and shows its usefulness using simulation results.

Group communication system (GCS) is a useful mechanism for constructing reliable, fault-tolerant distributed application. When GCS is extended in mobile environment, the membership change occurs frequently due to the mobility of mobile nodes and unreliable wireless communication within a cell. In this paper, we propose a scalable group communication scheme to support mobile systems in an Internet environment with wireless cells. Our scheme leverages the layered approach, our previous work, to enhance the scalability. Furthermore, to shield group view from the mobility and temporary disconnection of mobile hosts, we extend the hierarchical view management of layered approach. The simulation result shows that our scheme can reduce the overhead of membership management and the number of messages exchanged to complete the view event process.

One of the difficulties inherent to conservative parallel discrete event simulation (PDES) is the need for extraction and explicit specification of the lookahead. In this paper we propose a simulator design which allows users to build simulation models with lookahead transparently. This is based on the cooperation between PDES experts and the users, and on the reusability of model components. We introduce the principal design of the simulator and give the results related to its lookahead.

parallel simulations using optimistic synchronization strategies such as Time Warp, operate with no regard to global synchronization since this results in greater parallelism and lower synchronization cost. However, like virtual memory, the parallel simulators may end up thrashing instead of performing useful work. The complication in using a Time Warp simulator is then to configure it suitably for good performance and avoid thrashing. Unfortunately, the optimal configuration is not generally static among different applications or even throughout an entire run of a single application. Thus, online feedback control systems are deployed to govern the adjustment of input parameters in our Time Warp simulation kernel. The design and implementation of effective feedback control systems can be difficult; the extra processing is pure overhead that must be absorbed by any performance gains delivered. The problem is further complicated when attempting to build a simulation kernel that is designed efficiently to operate with many different applications. In this paper, we introduce a control-centric architecture that is used to monitor and manage different parts of a Time Warp simulator. Specifically, we extend concepts from control theory such as adaptive control and stability, to better understand and design hierarchically-distributed run-time control systems for Time Warp based parallel simulation.
