Advanced distributed simulation (ADS) is an enabling concept to support the networked interaction of models and real-world elements resident at geographically dispersed sites planned for next-generation simulation environments such as the Joint simulation System (JSIMS). In this paper, we review the DEVS (discrete event systems specification) formalism and indicate why it provides the right framework to address many of the difficult technical issues that must be solved to enable ADS to provide infrastructures for distributed simulation. Then we address two of these issues in detail. The first issue addressed is the use of filtering and predictive contracts to reduce the tremendous amounts of data and control messages that must be transmitted in simulations. The second part focuses on scheduling and synchronization mechanisms for the efficient parallel execution of such models.

Time Warp's optimistic scheduling requires the maintenance of simulation state history to support rollback in the event of causality violations. State history, and the ability to rollback the simulation, can provide unique functionality for human-in-the-loop simulation environments. This paper investigates the use of Time Warp to output valid simulation state in a near real-time manner, re-execute portions of the simulation, and interactively probe simulation values to ascertain underlying causes of transient behavior. A shared-memory, multi-threaded interactive simulation architecture is presented and the additional state saving requirements imposed by interactivity are examined. The shortcomings of existing state saving schemes lead us to propose multiplexed state saving (MSS). By interleaving check-pointing and incremental state logs MSS provides bounded rollback costs and asynchronous access to prior simulation state. The interaction algorithms and MSS form a scalable, bounded cost component suitable for use in a real-time interactive Time Warp system.

We revisit the notion of event simultaneity in the context of parallel and distributed simulation. Although the simulation community has recognized this problem for years, it has focused mainly on the mechanics of breaking event-time ties and has neither measured its extent nor considered its implications. Exant simulators (both serial and parallel) prohibit simultaneity either by user-specified event priorities or by an arbitrary (but well-documented) tie-breaking mechanism. We show, theoretically and empirically, that these strategies may lead to an invalid simulation. In doing so, we introduce the threshold of event simultaneity and use it to understand the semantics of simultaneity.

In traditional optimistic distributed simulation protocols, a logical process (LP) receiving a straggler rolls back and sends out anti-messages. The receiver of an anti-message may also roll back and send out more anti-messages. So a single straggler may result in a large number of anti-messages and multiple rollbacks of some LPs. In the authors' protocol, an LP receiving a straggler broadcasts its rollback. On receiving this announcement, other LPs may roll back but they do not announce their rollbacks. So each LP rolls back at most once in response to each straggler. Anti-messages are not used. This eliminates the need for output queues and results in simple memory management. It also eliminates the problem of cascading rollbacks and echoing, and results in faster simulation. All this is achieved by a scheme for maintaining transitive dependency information. The cost incurred includes the tagging of each message with extra dependency information and the increased processing time upon receiving a message. They also present the similarities between the two areas of distributed simulation and distributed recovery. They show how the solutions for one area can be applied to the other area.

A common approach for the quantitative analysis of a generalized stochastic Petri net (GSPN) is to generate its entire state space and then solve the corresponding continuous-time Markov chain (CTMC) numerically. This analysis often suffers from two major problems: the state space explosion and the stiffness of the CTMC. In this paper we present parallel algorithms for shared-memory machines that attempt to alleviate both of these difficulties: the large main memory capacity of a multiprocessor can be utilized and long computation times are reduced by efficient parallelization. The algorithms comprise both CTMC construction and numerical steady-state solution. We give experimental results obtained with a Convex SPP1600 shared-memory multiprocessor that show the behavior of the algorithms and the parallel speedups obtained.

This paper presents the tolerant, hybrid synchronization schema and its benefits for the parallel and distributed simulation of interconnected computer networks. The hybrid schema combines conservative and optimistic synchronization approaches by using lookahead for scheduling special events and using the flexibility of Time Warp in certain cases. In addition to these classical approaches the introduction of the |tolerance| allows the distributed modules to simulate further ahead than guaranteed by the conservative synchronization schema. This results in significantly smaller simulation runtimes and many other benefits.

The time warp mechanism is one of the most important synchronization protocols for parallel simulation. However for most applications, the successful use of time warp requires the careful selection of time warp optimization parameters (e.g. cancellation strategies, state saving frequency, and so on). Unfortunately, the optimal setting for the simulation parameters may not hold across an application domain or even throughout the entire simulation lifetime of a single application. Consequently, several investigators have proposed the dynamic adjustment of simulation parameters over the lifetime of the simulation. The dynamic adjustment of simulation parameters requires careful design considerations. Many of these considerations are similar to the problems studied by traditional nonlinear and adaptive control theorists. These considerations include the need to implement an adjustment mechanism that converges to stable values and the need to understand how parameter adjustment affects (sampled) output values. However, the dynamic adjustment of simulation parameters occurs by using general CPU cycles and thus introduces overhead into the simulation. This overhead must be carefully controlled-too little processing and the control system may not respond correctly; too much processing and the overall simulation performance may deteriorate. We address the design of two distinct feedback control systems for dynamic parameter adjustment and describe the design considerations that were made in their construction.

A cellular-neuron associative memory (CNAM), which is an associative neural memory of the Hopfield type with a restricted number of connections, is investigated. Algorithms for designing CNAMs take advantage of the fine-grained parallelism induced both by independent cell operations and by connection locality. A very important property is the fact that learning and retrieval processes may be performed in the same cellular array. Some necessary and sufficient conditions for strong stability and k-attractability are obtained, which are expressed in terms of cell neighborhood relations of stored patterns. simulation of learning and retrieval processes in a CNAM storing symbols drawn in thin lines showed that, for this class of patterns, it is possible to provide strong stability approximately for 2|Q| prototypes, where Q is the cardinality of the neuron neigborhood, with the capability of restoring 60-70% of 1-distortions.

Multithreaded distributed-memory multiprocessor architectures are composed of a number of (multithreaded) processors, each with its memory, and an interconnection network. The long memory latencies and unpredictable synchronization delays are tolerated by context switching, i.e., by suspending the current thread and switching the processor to another 'ready' thread provided such a thread is available. Because of very simple representation of concurrency and synchronization, timed Petri net models seem to be well suited for modeling and evaluation of such architectures. However, accurate net models of multithreaded multiprocessors become quite complicated, so their analysis can be a nontrivial task. This paper describes a timed colored Petri net model of a multithreaded multiprocessor architecture, and presents some results obtained by simulation of this model. A simplified approach to modeling such architectures is also proposed.

This paper presents the modeling and performance evaluation of a high voltage substation simulator with real time constraints, running on a multiprocessor architecture. The Stochastic Well-formed Net models of the simulator and of the target multiprocessor have been designed with the goal of providing guidelines as well as automatic tools for the generalization to several software and hardware configurations as well as mappings. Quantitative results have been obtained using the simulation facilities (both ordinary and symbolic) offered by the GreatSPN2.0 tool.
