Most programs from scientific computing can benefit from the use of numerical libraries which provide efficient implementations for standard solution methods that often occur in numerical simulations. This is especially true for parallel scientific computing. A methodology that allows the integration of library functions without any additional programming effort would ease this programming style. The authors address the question how to integrate library procedures into hierarchically organized parallel programs. The hierarchical structure of a specific algorithms results from a top-down decomposition into submethods which can be realized by library functions. The integration of library functions not only requires a correct specification of data dependencies between different modules but has also to take into account a possible distribution of data among the processors. They present algorithms for the adaptation of library modules such that their functional type and underlying data distribution fit into the hierarchical framework. The adaptation includes the construction of dataflow graphs that can be used to determine data distributions for the library modules such that a minimal global execution time results.

This paper presents the results of an experimental study to evaluate the effectiveness of multiple synchronization protocols and partitioning algorithms in reducing the execution time of switch-level models of VLSI circuits. Specific contributions of this paper include: (i) parallelizing an existing switch-level simulator such that the model can be executed using conservative and optimistic simulation protocols with minor changes, (ii) evaluating effectiveness of several partitioning algorithms for parallel simulation, and (iii) demonstrating speedups with both conservative and optimistic simulation protocols for seven circuits, ranging in size from 3K transistors to about 87K transistors.

Large-scale ecological simulations are natural candidates for distributed discrete event simulation. In optimistic simulation of spatially explicit models, a difficult problem arises when individuals migrate between physical regions simulated by different logical processes. We present a solution to this problem that uses shared object states. Shared states allow for efficient communication between LPs and for early detection of canceled events. We briefly describe an optimistic simulation environment called EcoKit, which operates on top of the WarpKit implementation of Time Warp. Our experiments with this system on a shared memory multiprocessor show that EcoKit promises to scale well both with the number of processors and the number of individuals simulated.

The scheduling of tasks in distributed real-time systems has attracted many researchers in the recent past. The distributed real-time system considered here consists of uniprocessor or multiprocessor nodes connected through a multihop network. Scheduling in such a system involves scheduling of dynamically arriving tasks within a node (local scheduling) and migration of tasks across the network (global scheduling) if it is not possible to schedule them locally. Most of the existing schemes on distributed real-time task scheduling ignore the underlying message scheduling required for global scheduling of tasks. These schemes consider the load on the processors at a node as the basis to migrate tasks from a heavily loaded node (sender) to a lightly loaded node (receiver). We believe that the identification of a receiver node should be based not only on the load on its processors, but also on the availability of a lightly loaded path from the sender to that receiver. In this paper we present an integrated framework for distributed real-time dynamic task scheduling (i) by proposing algorithms for transfer location, and information policies which take into account the states of both the processors and the links, and (ii) by proposing interactions among these policies and schedulers so that the guarantee ratio (ratio of number of tasks guaranteed to the number of tasks arrived) is improved as compared to algorithms where only local scheduling is done. For local scheduling, we use a variation of myopic algorithm. The effectiveness of the proposed framework has been evaluated through simulation.

A distributed algorithm is introduced for the analysis of large continuous time Markov chains (CTMCs) by combining in some sense numerical solution techniques and simulation. CTMCs are described as a set of processes communicating via message passing. The state of a process is described by a probability distribution over a set of reachable states rather than by a single state. simulation is used to determine event times and messages types to be exchanged, whereas transitions are realized by vector matrix products as in iterative numerical analysis techniques. In this way, the state space explosion of numerical analysis is avoided, but it is still possible to determine more detailed results than with simulation. parallelization of the algorithm is realized applying a conservative synchronization scheme, which exploits the possibility of precomputing event times as already proposed for parallel simulation of CTMCs. In contrast to a pure simulation approach, the amount of computation is increased, whereas the amount of communication keeps constant. Hence it is possible to achieve even on a workstation cluster a significant speedup.

The efficiency of parallel discrete event simulations that use the optimistic protocol is strongly dependent on the overhead incurred by rollbacks. The paper introduces a novel approach to rollback processing which limits the number of events rolled back as a result of a straggler or antimessage. The method, called breadth-first rollback (BFR), is suitable for spatially explicit problems where the space is discretized and distributed among processes and simulation objects move freely in the space. BFR uses incremental state saving, allowing the recovery of causal relationships between events during rollback. These relationships are then used to determine which events need to be rolled back. The results demonstrate an almost linear speedup-a dramatic improvement over the traditional approach to rollback processing.

The Hierarchical Tool HIT is a software tool for hierarchical modeling and performance evaluation of discrete event systems. Besides analytical and numerical solution techniques HIT provides the evaluation of models by sequential simulation. Here we present concepts for optimistic distributed simulation of HIT-models by partitioning them with respect to subhierarchies. The main goals of the concept being presented are the preservation of model structure even in lower levels of the realization (e.g. use of the process view of simulation throughout all levels of abstraction) and distribution transparency on the modeling level (homogeneous model specification for all solution techniques).

In this paper we address the problem of efficiently performing parallel discrete-event simulation in the case that events elaboration is dependent of other processes' local states. We propose a parallel simulation policy, called State Query Time Warp (SQTW), based on the Time Warp mechanism. We present experiments performed by means of a SQTW-based parallel simulator on a T-800 transputer machine for solving performance models based on state-dependent routing queueing network models. The experiments are used for assessing overheads and efficiency involved by SQTW; results show that high efficiency is achievable, and surprisingly reveal SQTW is able to globally reduce rollback overheads with respect to corresponding Time Warp simulations.

We propose two new asynchronous parallel algorithms for test set partitioned fault simulation. The algorithms are based on a new two-stage approach to parallelizing fault simulation for sequential VLSI circuits in which the test set is partitioned among the available processors. These algorithms provide the same result as the previous synchronous two stage approach. However, due to the dynamic characteristics of these algorithms and due to the fact that there is very minimal redundant work, they run faster than the previous synchronous approach. A theoretical analysis comparing the various algorithms is also given to provide an insight into these algorithms. The implementations were done in MPI and are therefore portable to many parallel platforms. Results are shown for a shared memory multiprocessor.

With two examples we show the suitability of the bulk-synchronous parallel (BSP) model for discrete-event simulation of homogeneous large-scale systems. This model provides a unifying approach for general purpose parallel computing which in addition to efficient and scalable computation, ensures portability across different parallel architectures. A valuable feature of this approach is a simple cost model that enables precise performance prediction of BSP algorithms. We show both theoretically and empirically that systems with uniform event occurrence among their components, such as colliding hard-spheres and ising-spin models, can be efficiently simulated in practice on current parallel computers supporting the BSP model.
