This paper presents wrapping techniques that we have developed in order to integrate applications into the scientific workflow management system TENT. These techniques take into account the varying degrees of controllability found for each application and utilize various kinds of communication mechanisms between application and the associated wrapper. We also give an outline of the principles of component technology employed in the CORBA based TENT environment. In addition, the means by which applications can be connected through their associated wrappers and TENT components to form distributed workflows are presented. It is demonstrated how TENT provides the user with a homogeneous perspective on scientific workflows running in a distributed environment and how he is enabled to efficiently configure and control these workflows by means of the TENT component model.

A distributed algorithm is introduced for the analysis of large continuous time Markov chains (CTMCs) by combining in some sense numerical solution techniques and simulation. CTMCs are described as a set of processes communicating via message passing. The state of a process is described by a probability distribution over a set of reachable states rather than by a single state. simulation is used to determine event times and messages types to be exchanged, whereas transitions are realized by vector matrix products as in iterative numerical analysis techniques. In this way, the state space explosion of numerical analysis is avoided, but it is still possible to determine more detailed results than with simulation. parallelization of the algorithm is realized applying a conservative synchronization scheme, which exploits the possibility of precomputing event times as already proposed for parallel simulation of CTMCs. In contrast to a pure simulation approach, the amount of computation is increased, whereas the amount of communication keeps constant. Hence it is possible to achieve even on a workstation cluster a significant speedup.

Performance of Time Warp simulation systems are often measured on exclusively available parallel computing resources. In distributed systems exclusive use is normally not feasible. Instead, due to the multi-tasking operating systems, many users share the workstations and their availability for parallel simulation purposes varies extensively. Time Warp has been found to be very sensitive to variations in available processing power. This paper presents two methods for a Time Warp VLSI simulation system to reduce the negative effect of a non-ideal environment on the execution of parallel simulations. A dynamic load balancing algorithm which adapts to the change of available processing power is presented. This mechanism, together with a multi-cluster partitioning technique significantly improve the performance of Time Warp based simulation systems on heterogeneous computing resource.

The Portable parallel/distributed Debugger project at the NASA Ames Research Center has built a debugger for applications running on heterogeneous computational grids. It employs a client-server architecture to simplify the implementation, and its user interface has been designed to provide process control and state examination functions on computations with a large number of processes. The debugger can find processes participating in distributed computations even when those processes were not created under debugger control. In addition to working in a computational grid environment, these techniques also work on other distributed memory jobs, such as those initiated by "mpirun".

The efficiency of parallel discrete event simulations that use the optimistic protocol is strongly dependent on the overhead incurred by rollbacks. The paper introduces a novel approach to rollback processing which limits the number of events rolled back as a result of a straggler or antimessage. The method, called breadth-first rollback (BFR), is suitable for spatially explicit problems where the space is discretized and distributed among processes and simulation objects move freely in the space. BFR uses incremental state saving, allowing the recovery of causal relationships between events during rollback. These relationships are then used to determine which events need to be rolled back. The results demonstrate an almost linear speedup-a dramatic improvement over the traditional approach to rollback processing.

Many systems rely on the ability to rollback (or restore) parts of the system state to undo or recover from undesired or erroneous computations. Examples of such systems include fault tolerant systems with checkpointing, editors with undo capabilities, transaction and data base systems and optimistically synchronized parallel and distributed simulations. An essential part of such systems is the state saving mechanism. It should not only allow efficient state saving, but also support efficient state restoration in case of roll back. Furthermore, it is often a requirement that this mechanism is transparent to the user. In this paper we present a method to implement a transparent incremental state saving mechanism in an optimistically synchronized parallel discrete event simulation system based on the Time Warp mechanism. The usefulness of this approach is demonstrated by simulations of large, detailed, realistic FCA and a DCA-like cellular phone systems.

The Hierarchical Tool HIT is a software tool for hierarchical modeling and performance evaluation of discrete event systems. Besides analytical and numerical solution techniques HIT provides the evaluation of models by sequential simulation. Here we present concepts for optimistic distributed simulation of HIT-models by partitioning them with respect to subhierarchies. The main goals of the concept being presented are the preservation of model structure even in lower levels of the realization (e.g. use of the process view of simulation throughout all levels of abstraction) and distribution transparency on the modeling level (homogeneous model specification for all solution techniques).

Introduces and evaluates a new efficient dynamic load-balancing scheme for parallel molecular dynamics simulation on distributed memory machines. It decomposes a spatial domain of particles into disjoint parts, each of which corresponds with a processor and dynamically changes its shape to keep almost the same number of particles throughout simulation. In contrast to other similar schemes, ours requires no long-distance inter-processor communications but only those among adjacent processors (and, thus, little communication overhead), whereas it still guarantees fast reduction of load imbalance among the processors. It owes these advantages mainly to the following features. (1) The sufficiently correct global load information is effectively obtained with the stepwise propagation of appropriate information via nearest-neighbor communication. (2) In addition to the global load balancing, another load-balancing procedure is also invoked on each processor without global load information in order to suppress the rapid increase or decrease of loads. Thus, information from remote processors can provide reliable values even after a certain period of delay. To evaluate the effectiveness of our scheme, we have integrated our load balancer into the publicly-available NAMD simulation system, through replacing its built-in load-balancing component. Preliminary experiments on a cluster of workstations connected through Myrinet switches shows that it successfully reduces load imbalance and improves the simulation performance.

We investigate conservative parallel discrete event simulations for logical circuits on shared-memory multiprocessors. For a first estimation of the possible speedup, we extend the critical path analysis technique by partitioning strategies. To incorporate overhead due to the management of data structures, we use a simulation on an ideal parallel machine (PRAM). This simulation can be directly executed on the SB-PRAM prototype, yielding both an implementation and a basis for data structure optimizations. One of the major tools to achieve these is the SB-PRAM's hardware support for parallel prefix operations. Our reimplementation of the PTHOR program on the SB-PRAM yields substantially higher speedups than before.

When used to simulate manufacturing systems, most existing parallel simulation languages cannot easily implement some features of those systems, such as the scheduling rules of a machine or the sharing of operators by multiple machines. This paper presents the design and implementation of a parallel Object-oriented Manufacturing simulation Language, called POMSim. A POMSim simulation is developed by using the concept of classes (entity-types) and inheritance to support iterative design of efficient simulation models. POMSim completely hides all the details of parallel simulation, and provides simple and direct constructs to efficiently model the scheduling rules in manufacturing simulation. It also provides asynchronous method invocation and synchronous function call. Pomsim libraries predefine a set of basic classes for manufacturing simulation, each of which represents a particular component in the physical manufacturing system.
