Optimistic techniques can improve the performance of discrete-event simulations, but one area where optimistic simulators have been unable to show performance improvement is in the simulation of parallel programs. Unfortunately parallel program simulation using direct execution is difficult: the use of direct execution implies that the memory and computation requirements of the simulator are at least as large as that of the target application, which restricts the target systems and application problem sizes that can be studied. Memory usage is especially important for optimistic simulators due to the need for periodic state-saving and rollback. In our research we addressed this problem and have implemented a simulation library running a Time-Warp-based optimistic engine that uses direct execution to simulate and predict the performance of parallel MPI programs while attaining good simulation speedup. For programs with data sets too large to be directly executed with our optimistic simulator, we reduced the memory and computational needs of these programs by utilizing a static task graph and code-slicing methodology; an approach which also exhibited good performance speedup.

In this paper, we present a parallel simulator (SWiMNet) for PCS networks using a combination of optimistic and conservative paradigms. The proposed methodology exploits event precomputation permitted by model independence within the PCS components. The low percentage of blocked calls is exploited in the channel allocation simulation of precomputed events by means of an optimistic approach. %To illustrate and verify the developed approach, Experiments were conducted with various call arrival rates and mobile host densities on a cluster of Pentium workstations. Performance results indicate that the SWiMNet achieves a speedup of 6 employing 8 workstations, and a speedup of 12 with 16 workstations.

The authors describe a new parallel image understanding machine RTA/1 design based on the recursive Torus architecture, and proposed a data level parallel processing scheme using parallel data structures. Various types of parallel image analysis algorithms were developed to demonstrate the effectiveness of both RTA/1 and the parallel data structures. The performance of all algorithms were evaluated by simulation and it was shown that about two order of magnitude speed-up can be attained by using 32 × 32 PE tours. The five types of parallel data structures described here are only fundamental ones and one needs to explore new distributed data representations and coordinated communication procedures to increase the flexibility, utility, and efficiency of the parallel processing on RTA/1. The Pascal like notation used to describe the parallel data structures and algorithms is to be improved to a complete parallel programming language. However the development of the parallel programming language should follow the investigation of the control level parallel processing on RTA/1, since parallel image understanding systems require both data and control level parallel processing capabilities. © 1993 IEEE.

There has been rapid growth in the demand for mobile communications over the past few years. This has led to intensive research and development efforts for complex PCS (personal communication service) networks. Capacity planning and performance modeling is necessary to maintain a high quality of service to the mobile subscriber while minimizing cost to the PCS provider. The need for flexible analysis tools and the high computational requirements of large PCS network simulations make it an excellent candidate for parallel ***, we describe our experiences in developing two PCS simulation models on a general purpose distributed simulation platform based on the Time Warp mechanism. These models utilize two widely used approaches to simulating PCS networks: (i) the call-initiated and (ii) the portable-initiated models. We discuss design decisions that were made in mapping these models to the Time Warp executive, and characterize the workloads resulting from these models in terms of factors such as communication locality and computation granularity. We then present performance measurements for their execution on a network of workstations. These measurements indicate that the call-initiated model generally outperforms the portable initiated model, but is not able to capture phenomenon such as the “busy line” effect. Moreover, these studies indicate that the high locality in large-scale PCS network simulations make them well-suited for execution on general purpose parallel and distributed simulation platforms.

Over-optimistic execution has long been identified as a major performance bottleneck in Time Warp based parallel simulation systems. An appropriate throttle or control of optimism can improve performance by reducing the number of rollbacks. However, the design of an appropriate throttle is a difficult task, as correct computations on the critical path may be blocked, thus increasing the overall execution time. In this paper we build a cost model for throttled execution that involves both rollback probability and probability for an event computation being on the critical path. The model can estimate an appropriate size of time window for a throttled execution using statistics collected from the purely optimistic execution. The model is validated by an experimental study with a set of synthetic workloads.

A new model for communication in MANET is presented: Instead of omnidirectional transmissions, as assumed in most papers and all existing systems, the members are allowed to submit data in a fixed number of different directions (sector subdivision) and to adjust the transmission power in each sector separately. A simulation environment (simulation environment for ad hoc networks, SAHNE) is presented that allows simulation of communication strategies in MANET that use sector subdivision, and simulation results are shown where communication paths are selected via hop-minimization or geometric spanner properties. SAHNE is based on C++ and common libraries, which ensures that it can be used on many different platforms. The experiments show the influence of different parameters in realistic scenarios, and using geometric routing seemed to be better than using hop-minimization.

This paper presents an approach for speculative parallel execution of rendezvous-synchronized simulations. Rendezvous-synchronized simulation is based on the notions of processes and gates and on the rendezvous mechanism defined in the basic process algebra of LOTOS—a standard formal specification language for temporal ordering[2]. Time is introduced via a mechanism similar to the delay behaviour annotation provided by the TOPO toolset[4-6].The algorithm allows speculative gate activations. This increases the available parallelism while ensuring correct execution of the *** model is used to describe closed stochastic queueing network simulations. Analysis of their execution results suggests that the model makes available a promising degree of parallelism.

distributed simulation enables participants situated in different geographical locations to share a common virtual world, which is called a distributed virtual environment (DVE). Among the different research topics concerned with DVE, there is a current trend of linking multi-agent systems and DVE together. With the properties of autonomy, social ability, reactivity and proactiveness, agents can be used to represent entities in DVE, where fast and accurate decision making is a determining factor of the whole environment. This paper provides a description of integrating agents into an HLA-based distributed simulation. It focuses on how to construct the sensor of an agent with different interest management schemes. Using the JADE (Java agent development framework) agent toolkit and the high level architecture (HLA) in our prototype, a minesweeping game, we outline two different implementations of this game. Due to the dynamic characteristics of agents, a problem of overdue information from the environment is discussed, and we propose an enlarged subscription region method to solve this problem. Moreover, advisories provided by the HLA are adopted to reduce the overheads. Conclusions are drawn based on the experimental results of these implementations.

In a distributed simulation, simulation components of various types are executed at geographically different locations, forming a simulation federation to create a common virtual environment. Under the High Level Architecture (HLA), information that will be produced and consumed by a simulation component is defined in its object model, and how that information is produced and consumed is well encapsulated inside the simulation component's implementation. However, in the current implementation of the HLA's Runtime Infrastructure (RTI), information hiding between groups of simulation components in a simulation federation is not addressed. In this paper, we discuss how hierarchical federations architectures can be used to tackle this problem. The hierarchical federations architecture adopted in this paper differs from the existing architectures in that it is based on a hybrid approach for inter-operability between simulation federations. To demonstrate the information hiding using the architecture, a distributed semiconductor supply-chain simulation is also described in the paper.

We divide potential NII (National Information Infrastructure) services into five broad areas: Collaboration and televirtuality; InfoVISiON (Information, Video, Imagery, and simulation on Demand), and digital libraries; commerce; metacomputing; WebTop productivity services. The latter denotes the broad suite of tools we expect to be offered on the Web in a general environment we term WebWindous. We review current and future World Wide Web technologies, which could underlie these services. In particular we suggest an integration framework WebWork for high performance (parallel and distributed) computing and the NII. We point out that pervasive WebWork and WebWindows technologies will enable, facilitate and substantially accelerate such complex software processes on the NII. We briefly analyze seven broad application areas: society; business enterprises; health care; defense command and control, and crisis management; education; collaboratory; manufacturing. We contrast their use of NII services with a more detailed examination of the manufacture of complex systems, such as aircraft and automobiles. This application stresses the NII but there is a remarkable opportunity to develop new manufacturing practices that offer cost savings and reduced time to market.
