We compare the performance of a simulation code for lattice quantum electrodynamics, running on the cluster computer ALiCE (Alpha-Linux-Cluster-Engine) and the Cray T3E-1200 system. We present results from simulations using the novel parallelized multicanonical hybrid Monte Carlo algorithm. We merge multicanonical simulation techniques with the hybrid Monte Carlo algorithm to achieve a parallel scheme, and thus to be able to fight the notorious metastabilities by use of high performance parallel computers. We demonstrate for this application field that ALiCE is superior to the Cray T3E-1200 by factors of about 1.3 to 2.

A new parallel algorithm for simulating Ising spin systems is presented. The sequential prototype is the n-fold way algorithm, which is efficient but is hard to parallelize using conservative methods. Our parallel algorithm is optimistic. Unlike other optimistic algorithms, e.g., Time Warp, our algorithm is synchronous. It also belongs to the class of simulations known as "relaxation"; hence it is named "synchronous relaxation." We derive performance guarantees for this algorithm. If N is the number of PEs, then under weak assumptions we show that the number of correct events processed per unit of time is, on average, at least of order N/logN. All communication delays, processing time, and busy waits are taken into account.

This paper analyzes the Detailed Policy Assessment Tool (DPAT) as an example of a practical real-world aviation simulation that uses optimistic simulation technology. We present a review of analyses that have used DPAT results to support their conclusions, and discuss the design and performance of the system in the context of parallel simulation. The thrust of this paper is to explain how DPAT avoids some of the problems associated with optimistic simulation, while exploiting its strengths. A key conclusion is that parallel simulation technology, particularly optimistic synchronization, needs to be built into the product from its conceptual design through implementation, as opposed to adding it afterwards.

With fixed lookahead information in a simulation model, the overhead of asynchronous conservative parallel simulation lies in the mechanism used for propagating time updates in order for logical processes to safely advance their local simulation clocks. Studies have shown that a good scheduling algorithm should preferentially schedule processes containing events on the critical path. This paper introduces a lock-free algorithm for scheduling logical processes in conservative parallel discrete-event simulation on shared-memory multiprocessor machines. The algorithm uses fetch and add operations that help avoid inefficiencies associated with using locks. The lock-free algorithm is robust. Experiments show that, compared with the scheduling algorithm using locks, the lock-free algorithm exhibits better performance when the number of logical processes assigned to each processor is small or when the workload becomes significant. In models with large number of logical processes, our algorithm shows only modest increase in execution time due to the overhead in the algorithm for extra bookkeeping.

A delivery problem which reduces to an NP-complete set-partitioning problem is considered. Two algorithms of parallel simulated annealing, i.e. the simultaneous independent searches and the simultaneous periodically interacting searches are investigated. The objective is to improve the accuracy of solutions to the problem by applying parallelism. The accuracy of a solution is meant as its proximity to the optimum solution. The empirical evidence supported by the statistical analysis indicates that the interaction of processes in parallel simulated annealing can yield more accurate solutions to the delivery problem as compared to the case when the processes run independently.

In this paper we present a simulation environment for storage area networks called SIMLAB. SIMLAB is a part of the PRESTO project, which is a joint project of the Electrical Engineering Department and the Computer Science Department of the Paderborn University. The aim of the PRESTO project is to construct a scalable and resource-efficient storage network that can support the real-time delivery of data. SIMLAB has been implemented to aid the development and verification of distributed algorithms for this storage network. However, it has been designed in such a way that it can also be used for the simulation of many other types of networking problems. SIMLAB is based on C++ and common libraries and input/output formats, which ensures that SIMLAB can be used on many different platforms. We therefore expect SIMLAB to be useful also for other people working on similar problems.

In a distributed simulation, simulation components of various types are executed at geographically different locations, forming a simulation federation to create a common virtual environment. Under the High Level Architecture (HLA), information that will be produced and consumed by a simulation component is defined in its object model, and how that information is produced and consumed is well encapsulated inside the simulation component's implementation. However in the current implementation of the HLA's Runtime Infrastructure (RTI), information hiding between groups of simulation components in a simulation federation is not addressed. The authors discuss how hierarchical federation architectures can be used to tackle this problem. The hierarchical federation architecture adopted in the paper differs from the existing architectures in that it is based on a hybrid approach for interoperability between simulation federations. To demonstrate information hiding using the architecture, a distributed semiconductor supply-chain simulation is also described.

This paper addresses the issue of efficient and accurate performance prediction of large-scale message-passing applications on high performance architectures using simulation. Such simulators are often based on parallel discrete event simulation, typically using the conservative protocol to synchronize the simulation threads. The paper considers how a compiler can be used to automatically extract information about the lookahead present in the application and how this can be used to improve the performance of the null protocol used for synchronization. These techniques are implemented in the MPI-Sim simulator and dHPF compiler which had previous been extended to work together for optimizing the simulation of local computational components of an application. The results show that the availability of lookahead ranging improves the runtime of the simulator by factors ranging front 9% up to two orders of magnitude, with 30-60% improvements being typical for the real-world codes. The experiments also show that these improvements are directly correlated with reductions by the number of null messages required by the simulations.

When used to simulate manufacturing systems, most existing parallel simulation languages cannot easily implement some features of those systems, such as the scheduling rules of a machine or the sharing of operators by multiple machines. This paper presents the design and implementation of a parallel Object-oriented Manufacturing simulation Language, called POMSim. A POMSim simulation is developed by using the concept of classes (entity-types) and inheritance to support iterative design of efficient simulation models. POMSim completely hides all the details of parallel simulation, and provides simple and direct constructs to efficiently model the scheduling rules in manufacturing simulation. It also provides asynchronous method invocation and synchronous function call. Pomsim libraries predefine a set of basic classes for manufacturing simulation, each of which represents a particular component in the physical manufacturing system.

Recently a new class of synchronization algorithms for parallel discrete event simulation has been proposed, namely the near perfect state information algorithms, which are based on a motion of error potential to control the optimism of event execution. An algorithm of this class, called elastic time algorithms (ETA), has been instantiated. In this algorithm, the error potential is computed using temporal information (next event timestamp, simulation clocks etc.) and is then translated into event execution delay based on a constant factor. In this paper we present a scaled version of ETA (SETA), in which the error potential is translated into event execution delay based on both a constant factor and art additional scaling factor determined dynamically as a function of the event granularity. We have implemented versions of ETA and SETA for a cluster of PCs connected by a Myrinet switch and we have established in an empirical study that SETA outperforms ETA if there is difference in the granularity of different event types.
